The most recognizable "signs" are ones we see on the road or the branding in advertisements. The logos for major companies don't do much more than perk our interest or disdain. They surely don't deliver on their promises for our lives to be happier, healthier, and easier. On this feast of Corpus Christi, we hear the account of the Last Supper. This was Passover, an ancient sign of the covenant of Moses. The Hebrew people celebrated God's providential care for His people. To the listening disciples, Jesus makes a very bold claim. "This is my blood of the covenant." At the time of the first Passover -- the redemption of the Hebrew people from slavery to the Egyptians -- the blood of the sacrificial lamb was spread on the lintels of the doorpost. Tomorrow, some of the disciples would witness the blood of the new covenant spread across the wood of the cross. Christ s Body and Blood are more than a sign. They are a sacrament. In the sacrament, the sign makes real what it signifies. More than ritual, a sacrament enacts truth of the covenantal love of God and His promise of fidelity. It's a promise God keeps. The same bread and wine of that first Holy Thursday liturgy becomes -- throughout the centuries and until the end of time -- the very Body and Blood of Christ. On this feast, we celebrate the unfailing covenantal love of our God. As you partake in the Eucharist today, and next Sunday, and the Sunday after that, remember that you receive neither a meaningless sign nor an empty offer. You receive God Himself, as He fulfills His promise to remain with us always. Question of the Week: Do I see the Eucharist as an obligation or as a means of life? What are ways I can prepare to receive Holy Communion? And we must always communicate our concerns to the appropriate parties. Sometimes this means communicating our safety concerns to our children. And sometimes this means communicating our concerns about seemingly inappropriate behavior to those who are in a position to intervene. Parents must also listen carefully to their children and observe both their children s activities and the behavior of older children and adults who interact with them. When children exhibit dramatic behavioral changes, adults must find out what caused the changes. Being aware of what s happening with our children means talking to, listening to, and observing them - at every opportunity. 5 Page Five Queen of the World Church, St. Marys, Pennsylvania June 3, 2018 Dear Parishioners, How might we honor the Lord in the Eucharist? Today s feast is a good beginning. A solemn liturgy, a procession, lots of prayers of gratitude...indeed. There are many other ways too. Let s start with His command: Take and eat; take and drink! How often, how reverently do we sit with the Lord as He did with those first disciples at the Last Supper? How well do we listen to His every word? How do we join Him in song? How do we translate all of this into our Eucharistic lives of service? In effect, everything we are about as Catholic Christians begins and brings us back to the Eucharist. Yet, the Eucharist itself is not an end, it is the means. Jesus gave it to us to accomplish much. Such as holiness. Such as unity. Such as an appreciation for our gifts. Millenniums after the Last Supper, as much as the Eucharist has meant to us, we have a long way to go. The Second Vatican Council refers to the Eucharist as the Source and Summit of our lives. How, then, do we explain away any choices we make to refrain from attendance AND full participation? How then do we explain an lackadaisical attitude toward this most precious gift? Do we remember that after we have received Holy Communion our bodies ARE tabernacles? Mine, yours, everybody s With what reverence do we attend to the Lord present in everyone we celebrate with? How do we bring people to Mass? How do we bring people back to Mass? What ministry do we participate in, or are we content with just taking rather than being part of the giving? How does the Sacrifice of Christ resonate with our spiritual lives? How is the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus apparent in me as I celebrate liturgy and bring its graces to bear in my own life? Yes, celebrating Corpus Christi is a good start. But, the great mystery of the Eucharist should, as with any mystery, leave us with as many questions as we have answers fr jeff SUMMERTIME, WHEN THE LIVING IS EASY Welcome to summer! Most of our school children have completed their academic year and have come to summer break. We wish them and all of our families well - have a safe and enjoyable summer. I offer the usual reminder to stay faithful to Sunday mass, from which we do not take a break - it is our primary way of experiencing the Lord s grace and help. Remember, too, to include other ways of growing in faith. Pray at home as a family. Stop for a brief visit at Church. Check out our Vacation Bible School. Do a pilgrimage to another church, especially if you are traveling. Read the Bible together. Check out things available on line, especially at FORMED. We have learned through the years that keeping our children s minds sharp during summer is important. So, they spend some time reading, rehearsing their math skills, attending academic camps, etc. It is all the more important to strengthen their souls and their journey in faith. Mom and dad, and in some cases, grandma and grandpa, that only happens with your encouragement. FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI Today we have one final special feast to wrap up our Lenten / Easter / Pentecost / And Beyond. We celebrate the Eucharist on Corpus Christi. This great mystery of faith is one of the Lord s most precious gifts to us - the very gift of Himself in this Sacrament. In our community, we will enjoy the Procession, a longstanding way to honor the Lord and give witness to our Catholic, Eucharistic faith. See the details elsewhere in the bulletin and join us in prayer as a whole community. ORDINATIONS TO PRIESTHOOD This Friday evening at 7 pm at St. Peter Cathedral, Erie, Bishop Persico will ordain two young men as priest in service to the Church. Consider making the trip, a pilgrimage to our Mother Church, to join the larger Church at prayer on this festive occasion of the call to priesthood. If your family has never participated in an Ordination Mass, or if it has been a long time, it is a great way to be part of a joyful occasion in faith. Please pray for our candidates to priesthood: Rev Mr. Ian McElrath and Rev. Mr. Andy Boyd. May the Lord bless them as He calls them to the Sacrament of Holy Orders. MEN S CURSILLO PLANNED FOR ST. MARYS A Men s Cursillo will be held in St. Marys on June 21-24, 2018 at Elk County Catholic High School. To submit an application / or for more info contact Rob / DeeDee Wortman at or go to: www/eriecursillo.org. Cursillo is a personal encounter weekend with Christ that is open to men and women 18 years and older. The Cursillo movement can assist in developing a deeper understanding of what it means to be fully Catholic. ST.
