4 Family Enrichment Centre of Sudbury Thursday, May 29, 2014 The Family Enrichment Centre asks you to Save the Date for our 20th Anniversary Dinner Celebration at the United Steelworkers Hall. Plan to join us as we remember our founding (33 years ago at the Catholic Centre as the Spiritual & Human Growth Ministry) and our many years of dedicated service to the community of Greater Sudbury and area. Elizabeth Centre located at 2100 Main Street in Val Caron is looking for volunteers! We are looking for volunteers to help make a difference in the lives of our residents. Volunteers are always welcome for life enrichment programs such as Baking, Bingo, Crafts, Exercise and many more... If you have a couple hours a week to dedicate to our residents please feel free to contact Trisha Petryna Volunteer Coordinator at ext 520. Our residents appreciate it! BE A PART OF OUR FAMILY PHOTO: Immediately following the Mass on June 1 st, and before we head up to Capreol for dinner, a Parish Family Photograph will be taken. A professional photographer has been hired. The photograph will be taken outdoors, against the back drop of the cedar trees on the South side of our parking lot. This photograph will grace the cover of our Parish Albums, when they are published. All parishioners are asked to participate so, even if you are not going to the Saturday night Mass, please come to the Church around 6pm to be a part of this family photo. ANNIVERSARY DINNER: Tickets for our June 1 st Year of Faith Anniversary dinner are now available for purchase. They may be purchased through the Parish office during regular hours, and are also available both before and after all weekend Masses at both our Worship Sites. Tickets will be available for purchase for only the next week (until May 19 th ) OR until all 200 tickets are sold. Please purchase your tickets early so that you will not be disappointed. Besides Bishop Plouffe, our other guests for the celebration will be Fr. Gerry Lalonde, Fr. Larry Rymes, Fr. Gerry Sullivan and Fr. Brendan Doherty.

5 THEO TOKOS On Wednesday this past week, I drove to Ottawa to participate in the National March for Life, which took place on Thursday. I have attended many of these annual marches, as I see them as a necessary means for reminding myself and all other Canadians that a holocaust of immense proportion is taking place in this land. As I mentioned previously, the theme of this year s March was gendercide, a reference to the reality that some people kill their unborn child in Canada simply because she is female. It is easy to become complacent in the face of evil. Many Canadians still think that there are some restrictions around abortion in Canada. There are not. Until the child is completely born, he/she is not considered a human person in Canada. If she/he has one foot remaining in the mother s body after 40 weeks of pregnancy, that child can be killed under our laws. In this regard, Canada stands with only 3 other countries with such a permissive attitude to abortion: North Korea, China, and the United States. Sad, but true. Of course, like all things evil, darkness begets darkness. Always simmering below the surface of abortion is the reality of infanticide what ethical difference, after all, is there between a nine month old pre-born baby and one born for only a day? That is the line of reasoning put forward by some of the top bioethicists in the world and published this week in one of the foremost medical journals. In The Journal of Medical Ethics, this delightful evil is discussed this week as if it had as much weight as deciding what colour to paint your living room. According to many of the writers in this journal, killing babies after birth is an entirely defensible position to take, even if the child is completely healthy in all respects. In this regard, it is worth recalling that, according to Statistics Canada, about 2,000 (2%) of Canada s annual abortions are done late term; of these, about 10 survive the procedure and are left to die. Evil begets evil. But enough talk of evil. It is no surprise to anyone that the Evil One is very active in the world, and it is not necessarily a good thing to give It much press. The Lamb of God, after all, has defeated the Prince of this world, and we need only proclaim this victory, even as we strive to live it each day. The Good News is in the reality of those who do strive to live it, and do so in concrete ways. That is why The Pregnancy Center is worthy of our support. Not only do they believe in the sanctity of all human life, but they work hard to support it by assisting young mothers in difficulty, in order to enable them to bring their children to term and to support them in the first years of their lives. Your participation in our first baby bottle initiative (which I hope will be an annual event) is one small way of proclaiming a very large truth that Jesus Christ reigns supreme and His Word is the final and definitive statement against all evil in our world. KEVIN S CATHOLIC WOMEN S LEAGUE TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Join our meeting this Tuesday, May 14th at 7:00 P.M. Participate in our letter writing campaign regarding the Ombudsman and his duties. Ontario is one of the only two provinces where the Ombudsman is not allowed to investigate complaints from nursing homes! You will be guided in writing a letter to the Provincial Parliament concerning this outrageous failure of our rights as citizens. Our letters are read and this is the most effective way to have our voices heard.

7 NEW HYMN BOOKS: We need 100 books for OLP Site. 64 have been purchased, so there are 36 books remaining. We need 125 books for our SK Site. 101 have been purchased, so there are 24 books remaining. For your convenience, a donation form can be found on our Parish Web Site, on the Donations Page. Some of those forms have been printed and are also available in the entranceways of both our worship sites. Books may be dedicated to loved ones, and will be allocated on a first come first claimed basis. Don t be disappointed donate towards a book today. Based on the current rate of book donations, we expect the last hymnal to be donated on or before the last day of June. ENTER INTO RECONCILIATION AND HOLY EUCHARIST: Registration forms are available from Fr. Michael, following any weekend Mass, for those wishing to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to begin weekly reception of Holy Communion. The normal minimum age for those wishing to begin this process is eight. So, if your child will be eight years of age or older by the end of this year, and you wish to practice your Catholic faith with them, please see Fr. Michael in order to begin that process. PARISH BREAKFAST: The Capreol Knights of Columbus are cooking breakfast in Our Lady of Peace Hall following our two morning Masses next weekend. Please come and enjoy some good food and fellowship. Busy Bees The busy bees are back to work. Come and join us. Bring a brown bag lunch. We have lots of fun. TAKE HOME A BABY BOTTLE: If you wish, please take a baby bottle home after Mass today, and fill it with your loose change over the following 5 weeks. On Father s Day, we will be asking you to return the filled bottles to the Church. All the money collected will be given to the Sudbury Pregnancy Centre, to support them in their excellent efforts in favour of life.
