1 Service of Divine Worship First Sunday of Lent March 10, 2019 Assemble in God s Name As you Focus For Worship Spirit above all spirits, revealed to us in the faithfulness of Jesus and in the testimony of our ancestors in the faith, keep us from temptations that block our worship and silence our witness. Inspire us to share both bread and meaning, to worship with pure motives, to serve without need for recognition or reward, that your name may be glorified and your will be done among us and through us. Amen. 1 Welcome and Proclamation of the Good News Prelude * Call To Worship Gather to remember and share stories of faith; rejoice in the goodness of the loving God. Before our stories began, there was God; through all our days, God walks with us. Worship the one who gives and sustains life; sing praises to the one who is our refuge. There is no place we can go where God is not; amid life s terrors, God s promises hold true. 1 Let us worship God. * Hymn No. 81 Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days Prayer of Confession Sovereign God, we confess our desire to reshape your world to our own advantage. We are more concerned with what we eat than with who will get to eat today. Our own security is more important to us than the health and safety of all your children. The first fruits of our labor grace the altars of our own desires instead of honoring you. We like promises without commands, gifts without responsibilities. O God, we confess that our ways don t work. Turn us around for true worship, gratitude and service. 1 (Silent Personal Prayer) Assurance of Pardon All who call on God will know salvation. Those who cling to God will be delivered. How great is the joy of people who are loved, forgiven, and set free to become a new creation, through Christ Jesus. 1 Thanks be to God; in Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen. * Song of Joy Hymn No. 82 v-1 O Lamb of God Most Holy! O Lamb of God most holy! Who on the cross did suffer, And patient still and lowly, Yourself to scorn did offer; Our sins by You were taken, Or hope had us forsaken: Have mercy on us, Jesus! * The Peace ( The Peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. As a sign of reconciliation please share the Peace of Christ with your brothers and sisters.) Proclaim God s Word Prayer For Illumination God our helper, by your Holy Spirit, open our minds, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may be led into your truth and taught your will, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 2 Gospel Lesson Luke 4:1-13 Children's Time Kelsey Hawisher-Faul Ministry of Music God Is Here with Me C. Adult HPC Mission Trip to Puerto Rico or North Carolina! As you have no doubt seen on TV, in the last two years, Puerto Rico and North Carolina have endured some devastating destruction due to flood waters and winds brought on by hurricanes. Your Mission Committee, with support from PC(USA) is organizing an Adult HPC Mission Trip to go to either Puerto Rico, or North Carolina in September or October, 2019, to help repair and clean up some of this damage. Last fall, a solicitation on our Sign-up Insert in our Sunday bulletins revealed that at least 16 HPC members were interested in a Mission Trip such as this. The trip would most likely last one week, a Sunday thru a Saturday. We hope YOU are called to join us in this effort. We plan to have a preliminary information sharing meeting starting at about 11:30 a.m. in room following our March 17 th worship service. Please plan to attend! (You are encouraged to indicate your interest by filling out a Sign-up Insert found in the bulletin.)
