St. John operates a half day Pre-School and a full day kindergarten through eighth grade Lutheran Elementary School. St. John is also a member of the Fox Valley Lutheran High School federation. 3 February 17 th, 2013 First Sunday in Lent Theme for Worship: Books have been written about the war between good and evil. Jesus gives us today a glimpse into his troubling temptations from the tempter himself. Through it all, our Savior relied on God s Word, God s Promise, God s Grace. Our Order of Worship Liturgy: Service of Word and Sacrament (CW pg 26) Opening Hymn: 121 Jesus, Grant that Balm and Healing First Lesson: Deuteronomy 26: Then you shall declare before the LORD your God: My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down into Egypt with a few people and lived there and became a great nation, powerful and numerous. 6 But the Egyptians mistreated us and made us suffer, putting us to hard labor. 7 Then we cried out to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice and saw our misery, toil and oppression. 8 So the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror and with miraculous signs and wonders. 9 He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey; 10 and now I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you, O LORD, have given me. Place the basket before the LORD your God and bow down before him. Psalm of the Day: Psalm 91 (pg. 100 in red hymnal) Second Lesson: Romans 10:8b-13 The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to 2

4 shame. 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Verse of the Day: it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only. Stand Gospel Lesson: Luke 4:1-13 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was 3 hungry. The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread. 4 Jesus answered, It is written: Man does not live on bread alone. 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 So if you worship me, it will 8 all be yours. Jesus answered, It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only. 9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. If you are the Son of God, he said, throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 12 Jesus answered, It says: Do not put the Lord your God to the test. 13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. We engage in the continuing development of disciples of Jesus Christ by gathering for worship and fellowship in order to grow in faith and knowledge of our Lord and Savior. By God s grace we proclaim Christ and His Word with our lips and lives. As Christians, we realize that it is only through the Gospel in Word and Sacraments one can be equipped for discipleship and bringing glory to God. As part of the body of Christ, we keep worship, personal Bible study, and Christian education as essential elements of our congregational life. We encourage our members and all people to grow in their faith and knowledge of Christ and His will for us. Voters Meeting: The church council has called a voters meeting for Monday, February 25 th at 7:30 p.m. There will be two agenda items: a proposal from the Board of Christian Education to expand the Preschool program for and a discussion of the Treasurer s position. Please make every effort to attend this important meeting. Thank you. Apple Valley Food Pantry Update: The February 2013 Apple Valley Food Pantry collection date is February 17th. Here is the list of needed items to put in your weekly bulletin: Cereal, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, canned pasta, peanut butter & jam, canned fruits, canned & boxed potatoes, cake mix & frostings, all crackers, macaroni & cheese. Easter Choir Update: Easter will be early this year, March 31. St. John 5

7 would like to have an Easter Choir. How about it singers? Our Christmas Choir was very wonderful and greatly appreciated. Maybe you thought about singing in the Christmas Choir, but didn t for whatever reason well now is your opportunity! The Easter Choir will meet for the first practice session on Monday, February 18 th at 6:30 p.m. Hope to see a crowd of joyful singers Florence Brandt-Wagner. Lenten Meals Lent is here. St. John will be having Lenten Meals on the following Wednesdays: February 20 th Seniors Pot Luck hosting; February 27 th Handbells are hosting the meal; March 6 th Faculty of St. John School & Board of Christian Education hosting the meal; March 13 th no one signed up yet; and March 20 th Dierdra and Steve Stary hosting this meal. Meals will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you are interested in hosting the March 13 th Lenten Meal please contact Carol Treptow either at church or via phone. Thank you. Lenten Supper February 20 St. John's seniors will provide this pot-luck meal complete with all the delectable delights only seniors can lay on the table. If you consider yourself a SENIOR, and can contribute a dish or two, inform Ron or Joan Zahn ( or ronandjoanz40@yahoo.com) what you intend to bring. After modest expenses, the free-will offering will be split between the Land Fund and the Martha Circle. FVL News: Mark your calendar now for FVL Theater s spring musical, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, on March 8 and 9 at 6:30 pm and March 10 at 2:00 pm. The feisty Molly Brown is determined to rise above her impoverished beginnings. Along the way she marries a lucky prospector, enters the highest echelons of Monte Carlo Society, survives the sinking of the Titanic, and earns the approval she so desperately seeks of those Beautiful People of Denver. Reserved seating tickets will be on sale at the FVL School office starting Monday, February 18. Adults $10, Senior Citizens $8, Children 12 and under $5. 6

8 FVL Daddy Daughter Dance Info: A Princess and Her King 2 nd Annual Daddy Daughter Dance March 3 th. FVL Schools cordially invites girls ages 3 to 12 and their Dad (or other significant male) to spend an afternoon together filled with dancing, games, prizes, and memories to last a lifetime! Sunday March 3 th 2:00PM to 5:00PM Located at Fox Valley Lutheran High School 5300 N. Meade Street, Appleton, WI Tickets are $10 per princess and king ($2.00 for each additional princess). Ticket prices will go up slightly at the door. Tickets are available at the Fox Valley Lutheran High School Office, and all FVL School Offices (visit to find the school office nearest you) Princesses -- please wear your prettiest princess dress. Kings, dress shirt and tie are encouraged! (more details found on the website) For more information find us on the internet at or by phone at WLC & Chamber Choir Tour: Greetings from Wisconsin Lutheran College! We are sharing with you news of the Wisconsin Lutheran Choir's upcoming 2013 Wisconsin Weekend Tour. We'll be performing a concert in Greenville (Appleton area) on Friday, March 1 at 7:30 pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church. We hope members and friends of your congregation will be able to join us. We will present a diverse program of sacred and secular choral works in original languages. Repertoire will include Cry Out and Shout by Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt; The Spheres from Ola Gjeilo s Sunrise Mass; and Welsh composer Paul Mealor s Ubi Caritas. The Chamber Choir will perform part songs by American masters including Norman Dello Joio, Frank Ticheli, Morten Lauridsen, and Stephen Paulus. The program will conclude with an American sampler of spirituals and traditional folk hymns. All tour concerts are free and open to the public. 7
