1 Service of Divine Worship Holy Communion Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2019 Assemble in God s Name As you Focus For Worship God of the stars, whose guidance is always available to those who look up and listen, speak to us now. We are troubled by many things. Break into our thoughts to reveal great joy at the heart of life, that we may worship wholeheartedly, offer you our best, and lead others to the discoveries of faith. Amen. 1 Welcome and Proclamation of the Good News Prelude We Three Kings arr. J Raney Hallelujah Ringers Call To Worship Arise and shine, your light has come! The glory of God has risen upon us. Now the grace of God is ours. Now the mystery is revealed. 2 Let us worship God. * Hymn No. 37 Infant Holy, Infant Lowly Prayer of Confession God of light, we admit our retreat into the shadows of pretension and exclusion. How often we choose to associate with people who are like us and then look down on others who differ from us. It is easier to discover their sins than to admit our own. We judge the poor and join their oppressors, while you call us to identify with those in need, that all may prosper together. We imagine that we alone are faithful stewards of your grace, while you welcome, as fellow saints with us, many whom we ignore. Save us from our earthbound judgments, that we may look up and be guided by the star that draws all people to yourself. Awed by your forgiving presence, we fall down to worship you. 1 (Silent Personal Prayer) Assurance of Pardon Lift up your eyes to see the glory of God. Receive light and healing. God has come to dwell in us and among us. Let your hearts rejoice and your faces be radiant. 1 Thanks be to God. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. * Song of Joy Hymn No. 40 v-4 Joy to the World He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders of His love. * The Peace ( The Peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. As a sign of reconciliation please share the Peace of Christ with your brothers and sisters.) Proclaim God s Word Prayer For Illumination Gracious God, we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from your mouth. Make us hungry for this heavenly food, that it may nourish us today in the ways of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen. 3 Gospel Lesson Matthew 2:1-12 Children's Time Susie Faas Ministry of Music See the Glowing Star H. Kemp Joyful Noise Singers Sermon Can You See the Star? IHN Homeless Hosting Sunday, January 27 thru Sunday, February 2, 2019 Your Help in Needed! Is there a better way to respond to the grace of God, than by providing food and shelter to the homeless in our own community? We are now taking sign-ups in the Atrium for helpers. HPC will be hosting homeless families 10/21/18 thru 10/28/18. You will see lots of different ways on the board where you can participate. Most of them take only a couple of hours of your time or less. An IHN week is truly a case where many hands make light work. Please check the sign-up board (in the atrium) to see how you can lend a hand. SAVE-THE-DATE Presbytery Youth Committee s Winter Retreat! Large Print Bulletins, Hymnals, Bibles and Hearing Receivers are available. Please ask an usher to assist you. Race in America The persistence of racial discord in the United States, long after the Civil Rights movement of the Sixties, has many of us shaking our heads. We wonder what we as individuals and as Christians can do to help bring about racial justice in America and just help everyone get along. The issue is complex and for many Americans confusing and disconcerting. However, as Christians we have a calling to be ambassadors of reconciliation. To equip us for this role and to help us work through some of our own feelings, small groups will gather to discuss two books on the subject. Waking Up White by Debby Irving is about Irving s dawning realization that we live in a racialized culture and what she as a white American can and should do about it. The other book is Anxious to Talk About It by Presbyterian Pastor Carolyn Helsel. She explores the reason why so many white folks become anxious when talking about race and offers ways to help us engage in those conversations. If you are interested in either of these books please see Karen Stine, Mick Gorsek, Leslie Dauer-Creek, Jeremy Schumm, Debbie Hamann or Neil Stewart.
