3 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners: How appropriate it is that we honor mothers during May, the month dedicated to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Lord and our mother. Today we salute, honor and pray for all mothers, living and deceased. Pope Francis does not miss an opportunity to highlight the vocation of motherhood. I thought I would share a few papal comments on motherhood. They merit our meditation: To be a mother is a great treasure. Mothers, in their unconditional and sacrificial love for their children, are the antidote to individualism. Mary s example provides an opportunity for the Church to reflect on the role of all mothers in society and the Church, yet, despite all of the symbolic glorification we give to motherhood, it is still under-valued. All of us give credit to our mothers for life and many other things, but not always are they listened to or helped in everyday life. Their important contribution to the life of society, their daily sacrifices and their aspirations are not always properly appreciated. To be a mother is a gift. Through their sacrifices, mothers assist in helping society to overcome its self-centered tendencies, as well as its lack of openness, generosity and concern for others. Motherhood is more than child bearing; it is a life choice entailing sacrifice, respect for life, and commitment to passing on those human and religious values which are essential for a healthy society. It is they, mothers, who often give the first roots of the faith, the ones that permeate deepest; without them not only would the faithful be lost, but also a good part of the deepest fire of our faith. Happy Mothers Day! With affection, Msgr. 4 Pasta Dinner Coming Soon Knights of Columbus Council 6213 will sponsor a pasta dinner at their Council home (Columbus Hall, 1451 Klockner Road, Hamilton) on Sunday, May 22, from 3 to 6 p.m. Proceeds to council programs and Marine Corps League Warrior Assistance Fund, which assists local veterans of all branches of the Armed Forces. Enjoy pasta, salad, roll, dessert, a glass of wine or beer, and soda/coffee/tea dinner with friends and help those in need. Dinner cost is $10; $5 for children ages 6-10; age 5 and under eat free. Please call for tickets. A Pastor s Admonition On Friday, April 29, our parish hosted an evening of recollection for married couples. It was an evening well-prepared and sponsored by our parish Marriage Ministry Team. Invited as speakers were Bill and Cheryl Wegner of Good News International, based in Howell, NJ. Many may remember Bill who conducted our Lenten Mission two years ago. In addition to the engaging presentation, the evening included prayer and refreshments. I have no doubt that those who did participate found the evening s activities both enjoyable and beneficial for their vocation. The team and I did have one disappointment we had hoped that many more couples would have participated. Only 13 couples participated a disheartening response for a parish of our size. So often parishioners are very keen to suggest parish activities but when events are planned, we find little enthusiasm. The goal or mission of the marriage ministry team is to provide opportunities for couples to enrich and strengthen their marriage. The team is certainly open to suggestions, striving to provide opportunities that will achieve this goal. Msgr. Gervasio A Sincere Thank You The thirty-five children of Mercy House sincerely thank you for your kindness and generosity toward them. They were thrilled and overwhelmed with the Communion attire. They couldn't believe their eyes! They said they would receive their King for the first time dressed as princes and princesses. You have made a lasting impression on these children. They know there are people who love them and consider them special and precious no one will ever be able to take that memory from them. Your generosity made this happen! Thank you again for making their sacred day truly wonderful. May God bless you. Scholar Patrons & Business Partners Thank you, and welcome to American Tire & Auto Care and to Welsh Farms, the newest members of the OLS School Scholar Patron & Business Partner program. The Bronze Level roster now reads: Kusina Ni Inang Filipino Cuisine Quakerbridge Pharmacy FUNdamentals Summer Basketball Camp American Tire & Auto Care Welsh Farms Please support them and join us in this noble and exciting work! Monies raised through this program are used to support the formation and education of the students of the OLS School to be future leaders of our community. For additional information about the program, please call OLS School ( ). Altar Linen Volunteers Volunteers are needed for the weekly care of our altar linens at St. Anthony Church. The members of this important ministry carefully launder and iron the purificators and corporals that are used during mass each day. If you are interested in joining this ministry and would like more information on how you may become involved, please contact Susan Commini ( ). Most volunteers are scheduled for seven to nine times a year. The more helping hands, the less frequently each volunteer will be scheduled! Our faith teaches us that Jesus remains present in his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, in the Sacrament that is reserved in the tabernacle. Thursdays Are Days Of Solemn Adoration The Blessed Sacrament will be placed upon the altar following the 7 a.m. Mass until Reposition at 6 p.m. All are invited to answer the Lord s call He wants us give Him the gift of our time. He wants us to come to Him bringing our needs, anxieties, joys, and thanks. Our Lady of Sorrows Church also is open during our office hours. Why not stop for even a brief moment to rejoice in the Lord s Presence? 4

5 Parish School News Active, involved and informed I guess these three words truly describe the students from our parish school. As you know, service to our community is a hallmark of who we are as a Catholic school. Our students pride themselves in always lending a hand, not only to each other but to the world in which we live. Most recently, our entire school was featured on Action News for their work on April 29 for a Day of Service. They started weeks before by collecting bags, snacks, drinks, peanut butter, and jelly. Days ahead, the lunch bags, gloves, and sandwich bread arrived. Using an assembly line process downstairs and gym floor space upstairs, our young students assembled almost 300 lunches for Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK). Each lunch contained a sandwich, fruit, drink, snack, and words of love from the children of Our Lady of Sorrows School. Within one hour, children changed the day for many people. Imagine what we as adults could do in a few hours! Hot on the heels of this project, the children realized the people of Ecuador needed their help. Yes, by Monday morning they were aware of yet another group they could support. The earth quake victims of Ecuador are in need of baby food items...formula, cereal, squeeze packs of food, jars of baby food. The children have prepared boxes to collect the items. They bring a item into school each day. Why not join them? We welcome your donations any day at the school. We will be collecting until Wednesday, May 11. Imagine how very informed and aware our young students are about the world around them, and how they can lend a hand. Even as school children they are building a better world and spreading the love of God. Their talents were showcased at the area Creativity Fair, and our students walked away with a number of trophies of recognition. We're still in high gear for the remainder of the school year with our eye set on graduation, high school acceptances and staying active. On June 7, we are hosting a special Open House for students in area public schools. The area schools will be closed on June 7 for a meeting, but Our Lady of Sorrows will be open and welcoming! Why not consider making a reservation for a shadow day for your children? Our school tuition is reasonable and affordable. Grant and scholarship opportunities are always available. Why not consider this special opportunity for your children? A safe, loving and effective education for each child. Our Lady of Sorrows School may be just the right fit for your child! Spots Available at PTA's May 14 Flea Market / Vendor Fair! Our Lady of Sorrows PTA will be hosting a Flea Market / Vendor Fair outside the school on Saturday, May 14, from 8 a.m. to noon. Spots are available, but they are going fast! Vendors are welcome! The cost is $25 for an area the size of 2 parking spaces. A limited number of tables are available to rent for $10 each. For more information, or to reserve a spot, ols.fleamarketvendorfair@gmail.com or check it out on Facebook at OLS FleaMarket-VendorFair. Caring Hearts Report During April, 315 hours of service (visiting, transportation, shopping, reassurance calls, assistance with paperwork, chores, and housekeeping) were provided by 47 volunteers to 49 persons. Caring Hearts volunteers provide non-medical services to our homebound elderly and disabled neighbors. If you would like more information on joining this satisfying ministry, either as a caregiver or a care receiver, please call Anne at Welcome! A warm welcome is extended to the following new parishioners and their families: Cynthia & Jason Collins Jean Bernard & Rosiclaire Dauphin Angelo Garcia Michael Menchaca Theriesa & Joaquin Monge Michele Nowacki Lauren Plummer Monica Schlesinger Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!... to everyone who donated yarn to the Prayer Shawl Group. The response was outstanding! We can continue to donate our shawls to the hospitals and nursing homes because of all your donations of yarn. Thank you again and God bless. OLS-SA Prayer Shawl Group 5

8 Be a Good Steward Thanks to all who returned their pledge cards soon after the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal was kicked off, our parish is 57% of the way to its goal of $110,000! If you are one of the 330 who made a pledge or a onetime donation, thank you! If, however, you wanted a little time to prayerfully consider pledging, but mislaid your pledge card or haven t yet returned it, please take this opportunity to do so. Through emergency assistance and other social service programs, the Church has directly helped alleviate the suffering of tens of thousands of people. Your gift will help the Diocese of Trenton to carry out its mission to care for all members of our one family in Christ. And when we exceed our goal, money returns to our parish! If you haven t already pledged, please visit then click on "Annual Catholic Appeal on the drop-down menu under "Donate" at the top of the page. Help your parish meet its goal! Thanks! Holy Name Society News The next and final meeting of the year will be held on May 11 at 1:00 p.m. in the Church Meeting Room. This month's subject of learning and discussion will be Staying Positive around Negative People, a selection of our Christopher News subscription. All men of the parish are invited to join us. Keeping Up Our Appearance Very often parishioners and visitors, with the best of intentions, bring to church outdated religious magazines, broken rosaries and statues, old holy cards, and a plethora of various mailings they receive from mission organizations. They place them at the church doors. These only serve to clutter the church and make additional work for our maintenance team who must dispose of them. Kindly, refrain from bringing such items to church. Bulk mailings from missions may be discarded in the usual way. Broken religious items, if not blessed, may also be discarded in the usual way. However, one should bury or burn blessed items. This can be done at home and the items need not be brought to church. Save the Date Our Lady of Sorrows-St Anthony's 22 nd Annual Golf Classic will be held at Mercer Oaks West Golf Course on Wednesday, September 21. Watch future bulletins for more information. 8 AROUND THE DIOCESE Light for Your Journey All are welcome for an Evening of Light on May 13 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at St. Gregory the Great Church (4620 Nottingham Way). Are you a young (or not so young) adult looking for a radical way to spend a Friday evening? Come on over to St. Greg's church on May 13 to meet friends, light a candle, listen to reflections, sit with our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration, write your prayer petitions, talk with a priest, go to confession, and enjoy music and refreshments. Be still, find peace, be loved! Priesthood Vocation Discernment Meeting Lord, How are You calling Me to Follow You? God created each one of us for a particular calling as a way to follow Him. Through the Sacrament of Baptism we become a child of God and thus we are called to live in holiness through the love of God and neighbor! It is important to remember that our true vocation does not come from the world, or from ourselves, but rather directly from God to follow Him! If you are interested in learning more about a vocation to the priesthood, join Rev. Msgr. Ralph Stansley for this month s discernment meeting, Sunday, May 22, at Our Lady of Good Counsel (137 Upper Ferry Road, West Trenton) from 4 to 6 p.m., as he shares his experiences of the priesthood, and leads a discussion about discernment and vocations. For further information and to register, please contact the Diocese of Trenton Office of Vocations ( ; vocations@dioceseoftrenton.org). It would be great to see you and hear how the Lord is working in your life! To Give Honor Is a Privilege As Mother s Day and Father s Day approach, we reflect on those who loved us first, entirely and unconditionally. We think of gifts to give to our dear ones and ways to honor our deceased to celebrate these special observances. Consider making a contribution, in honor of or in memory of your loved one, to help support someone in dire need. ICGMC s Angel Fund provides financial assistance to an elderly, homebound care receiver who is experiencing great financial hardship and has no other support available to them. Your generous monetary gift will give hope and help make life worth living for them. What an admirable and beautiful way to honor someone you love with a gift that gives! Checks should be made payable to ICGMC and mailed to Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Mercer County, 3635 Quakerbridge Road, Suite 16, Hamilton, NJ A special acknowledgment will be sent to the individual whom you are remembering. Thank you for being the gift, giving the gift, and sustaining the gift of life. Please call the office at for more information.
