Joshua Dear brothers and sisters, friends of Jesus and Brendan! So may pastoral activities begin after Labor Day. It's good to see families returning to Mass as they return to the neighborhood and the new school year begins! We ask God's blessings on all of our parish activities, new and old, and we pray for his special blessing on all students, teachers, and administrators at the beginning of the fall semester. We have received word from the Supreme Headquarters of the Knights of Columbus that Saint Brendan, Morning Star Council, #294 has received its charter. Now the work of the Knights can truly begin! We are always looking for new members! We will celebrate the installation of officers within the next few weeks. Thursday, September 14, is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross! We invite you to bring the crosses and crucifixes from your home for a special blessing. We will gather in Mary's courtyard at 7:00 p.m. for the blessing and process into the Church for Holy Mass. After Communion we will celebrate the Veneration of the Cross as we do on Good Friday! Please join us for this beautiful celebration... Next Sunday is Catechetical Sunday when churches around the country ask God's blessings on all those involved in the catechetical ministry of the parish, on our children and young people, and their parents. Join us at the 11:00 Mass as we commission and bless our catechists and families. Sunday School also begins next Sunday! All school age children and young people should be registered and attending classes. Ticket sales for the Dinner Dance have been slow. We need to make seating arrangements and give a number to Gargiulo's. I hope that many of our newer parishioners who weren't here for the 100th Anniversary will join us for the evening along with long time parishioners, friends of the parish, former parishioners and alumni of the schools. BRENDAN ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH September 10, 2017 As the redemption period of Generations of Faith continues we would like to thank all those who have been faithful in fulfilling their pledges. We recently received a disbursement check of $17, which partially reimburses the parish for the money spent in repairing the front steps. We have also been informed that there is a fairly significant group of people who have not kept up with their pledges. The income from the campaign is critical to the financial health of both the diocese and the parish. Please do the best you can to fulfill your commitment. Boy Scout Meet & Greet Come and meet the Leaders and Scouts of our scouting programs on Friday, Sept. 15th at 8PM in the school auditorium. Find out about our Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs. All boys ages 6 through 18 can join and are welcomed. Pick up a schedule of events at this meeting. ATTENTION ALL TEENS! We invite all our teens in 8th grade and High School to join us for the 5 pm Mass each Saturday. After Mass we will have a meeting with the Youth Group in the Clonfert Center. Invisible Monastery is a free web site that helps organize prayer for vocations. Our goal is to attract enough members to pray for vocations 24 hours a day in every diocese. Members of Invisible Monastery: Pledge to pray daily or weekly for vocations Choose their type of prayer-mass intention, rosary, private prayer, etc. Renew their pledge annually Receive a quarterly e-newsletter with prayers, resources, and ideas for promoting vocations May receive occasional communication from the diocesan Vocation Director with prayer requests or other information. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT We are always in need of more volunteers to spend time with Jesus during Eucharistic Adoration each week. We invite all adorers to sign the adoration book inside the Chapel entrance. If everyone would come for even one half hour of adoration each week we would be able to expand the hours of adoration from 9-4 pm Monday to Saturday and until 7 pm on Friday evenings. Jesus is waiting. Miracles happen. Make a Holy Hour. Saint Brendan Vocation Committee! Bishop DiMarzio has proclaimed a special YEAR OF VOCATIONS beginning on August 4 th, the Feast of Saint John Vianney. In preparation for this special year, we need to form a Parish Vocations Committee to pray for, promote, identify, and encourage young people to consider a vocation to the priesthood, diaconate, or consecrated life. We need to form a team willing to encourage daily prayer for vocations, make materials available and encourage our young people to ask themselves if they think God might be calling them to a life of service in the church. God never stops calling, we need to learn to listen Throughout the Year of Vocations, our statue of St. John Vianney will be in the chapel as a reminder for all of us to pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and the religious life for our diocese and from our parish. Beginning Sunday, October 1, we will have two icons of St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests at Mass. Each week we will invite someone from the Spanish speaking community and English speaking community to take the icons home and promise to pray for vocations with their family and friends throughout the week. The icons will be returned to the rectory the following Saturday. There will be a sign up sheet in the rectory if you would like to participate in this beautiful prayer for vocations.

We have a special need for volunteers to work both for our Sunday school classes and for the Thursday night Confirmation program. We offer free ongoing and professional training. As a Catechist, you will discover that prayer, liturgy and your own relationship with God will become more vibrant and meaningful. If you are interested please call Fr. Peter or Carmina De La Rosa. CENTINELAS DE DIOS En el mundo de la antigüedad los centinelas eran gente de gran importancia. Mantenían la seguridad de las comunidades y su deber era alertarles sobre cualquier peligro o ataque inminente. Antes de que hubiera cerrojos, sistemas de alarma y seguridad, los centinelas eran los protectores, la medida de seguridad. Así que cuando hoy el Señor le encarga a Ezequiel ser centinela, es un cargo de peso. Tan pesado, se nos hace conocer, que si Ezequiel falla y no da la voz de alarma a los que le rodean y ellos mueren en estado de maldad, Ezequiel será el responsable! Este profundo vínculo entre la voluntad de Dios en la tierra y en el cielo se repite en el Evangelio de hoy, donde Jesús nos instruye que tenemos que ser la fuerza de seguridad, los centinelas colocados en estado de alerta para que en ninguna parte del Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia, haya dos miembros del único Cuerpo que no estén reconciliados. La Sagrada Escritura nos dice que Jesús reconcilió todas las cosas en el cielo y en la tierra mediante la sangre de su cruz. Pero se nos da la misión de continuar esa reconciliación en la tierra por medio de nuestros incesantes esfuerzos de ser, como escribiera Pablo, embajadores de reconciliación. No nos quedemos muy cómodos pensando que nuestra única responsabilidad es mantenernos fuera del camino de la maldad y la discordia. También hemos de responder por la vida de los miembros de Cristo que nos rodean.

Baptisms are celebrated in English on the second Saturday of the month. Spanish Baptisms are celebrated on the fourth Saturday of the month. All Baptisms are celebrated at 12 Noon. Arrangements must be made in advance with a member of the Pastoral Staff. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS is a process for adults who wish to be baptized into the Catholic faith. Information about this program, or about reception of First Eucharist and Confirmation for adults, is available at the Rectory. MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least six months in advance and participation in the Diocesan Pre- Cana Program is required. Offering is $500 with or without music. SICK AND HOMEBOUND: Eucharistic Ministers are available to bring Holy Communion to those unable to come to Mass. In the event of serious illness please request the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. PARISH REGISTRATION: All parishioners are asked to register so that we may know you and provide reference letters when necessary.
