3 Today s Meditation DO NO HARM We listen quite a while before we get to the punch line of the first reading today: even though it would be an easy thing to do, David will not harm the anointed one of the Lord. We, of course, know that Jesus is the Messiah, the anointed one of God, but the Bible uses this term for many different people. It is scripture s way of indicating who has been chosen by God for a special place and mission in salvation history. In today s Gospel, Jesus presents a greatly enlarged list of those who, as children of God, we should not harm, but love instead: our enemies, those who curse us or do us harm, those who owe us money, the ungrateful, the wicked. The point of Jesus teaching is not to encourage these kinds of behaviors in others, but rather to form us in the image of our heavenly Father by increasing our opportunities to love unconditionally, expecting no return; to be merciful and forgiving, even when it would be easier not to. Ash Wednesday Schedule In her Wisdom, Holy Mother Church gives us the penitential season of Lent in order to prepare us for the great feast of Easter, the Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The following are reminders of the practices that are imposed upon us during Lent. Now is the time to start considering which spiritual practices you will put in place for the Lenten season. ABSTINENCE - All Catholics 14 years old and older are bound to the obligation of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent. Meat may not be used at all on these days. FAST - Catholics 18 years old and up to the beginning of the 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting. On these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs: together they should not equal anther full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juice are allowed. ASH WEDNESDAY - This is not a holy day of obligation; however, Mass attendance is strongly encouraged. 5 Mark your calendars now for the annual St. Anthony Run for the Heroes event. The event is on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th. There will be the traditional 5k and 10k races, and 1 Mile Honor Walk. These will be followed by the Red, White, and Blue Pancake Breakfast. Register for the race at itsyourrace.com. 7 LENTEN FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT CHRYSALIS CENTER The Women of St. Anthony would like to ask all parishioners to help with by donating these much needed items: Toiletries - School Supplies - Toys and books for 10 years and under - Diapers & wipes Please drop off at the parish office through 4/14/19. The Chrysalis Center is an inpatient facility for women with a substance abuse disorder and their children. Women with children can stay for three months and pregnant women can stay postpartum for four months. Last year, there were seven births. The Women of St. Anthony greatly appreciates your help with this fundraiser. (843) The Felician Sisters of South Carolina, together with the Board of Directors of the Felician Center, invite you to join them for a Lenten Pilgrimage of Prayer and Mercy on March 16, This pilgrimage to Kingstree, South Carolina and to the Felician Center is a unique opportunity for those from around the Diocese of Charleston to associate themselves through prayer and service with the mission and ministry of the Felician Center. The pilgrimage will begin at 11 am with Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of South Carolina-Our Lady of Joyful Hope celebrated by Fr. Christopher Smith, Pastor of Prince of Peace, Taylors and conclude at 5 pm. Participants will hear talks on the spirituality and vision of Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, learn more about the work of the Felicians here in South Carolina, and render acts of service by helping in the clothing closet, food pantry, or other ministry area. Prayers for Blessed Angela s intercession for specific needs and a blessing with her relics will be offered for all. This is an excellent opportunity to spiritually prepare for Easter through prayer and acts of service while learning more about the Felician Center, a long-standing ministry of the Felician Sisters here in the Diocese of Charleston. Es la manera bíblica de indicar quién ha sido elegido por Dios para un lugar y misión especial dentro de la historia de la salvación. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús presenta una abultada lista de aquellos a quienes, por ser hijos de Dios, no debemos dañar, sino más bien amar: nuestros enemigos, los que nos maldicen o nos hacen daño, los que nos deben dinero, los ingratos, los malvados. El punto de la enseñanza de Jesús no es alentar esos tipos de comportamiento en otros, sino más bien formarnos a imagen de nuestro Padre celestial cuando incrementamos las oportunidades para amar incondicionalmente, sin esperar nada a cambio; ser misericordiosos y compasivo, aun cuando sería más fácil no serlo.
