3 Today s Meditation THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus way of service, even if it requires giving one s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:28). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah (1 Kings 17:10-16). Psalm Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:24-28). Gospel This poor widow put in more than all the other contributors (Mark 12:38-44 [41-44]). NOTES ON MASS INTENTIONS Offerings, called stipends, for a Mass to be celebrated for your personal intention is an ancient practice of the church. It is a form of almsgiving and a spiritual work of mercy. According to Canon law, Mass intentions can not be scheduled beyond a year from the present day. Regrettably, with only one priest, there is the possibility of your scheduled intention having to be changed. If a Mass is not celebrated on the scheduled day, the intention will be moved to the next suitable date. Please call Andrea in the church office if you have any questions. Be sure to wear your holiday clothing, because we will have a special guest from the North Pole and you will want to be ready for pictures! WEDNESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY This group looks into the readings for the upcoming Sunday. Being prepared by a study of the readings is a great way to increase your active participation in the Holy Mass. Join Mike Hill in the gathering area of the church from 6-7 pm. Since this time coincides with CCD, parents are encouraged to attend and share the Good News with fellow parishioners and then evangelize their families. Any effort to get to know Jesus better will be blessed.
5 ST. ANTHONY ANNUAL TURKEY DRIVE We will be accepting donations of frozen turkeys, canned goods, stuffing, sides, desserts, etc. to make Thanksgiving Day dinner boxes for our local needy. Please drop off your donations at the church office. The school will be helping this effort with a canned goods drive. We will be sorting and packing up the dinner boxes on Sunday, November 18th after the 11 am Mass. On Monday, November 20th, we will distribute the boxes. Volunteers are needed on Sunday. Surplus dinners will go to Light House Ministries. This week at CYO... Escape Room!! Can you and your team escape in time?? On Sunday, November 11th, we are going to meet at Locked Inn on Dozier Blvd at 1:30 p.m. There will not be an additional CYO mtg. that evening. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP The next meeting in Tuesday, November 13th from 1-2 pm. If you have lost a loved one, come for a meeting. These meetings are led by the group. BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN This campaign is officially over; however, there are still bottles that have yet to be returned. Please return them to the Church office with or without a donation as soon as possible. This is an annual fundraiser, so the return of the bottles cuts the expenses for next year s effort. Thank you for your support. The following adoration hours are open. This means that no one is with Jesus receiving His graces. Please consider adding silent adoration to your prayer life. When you look at a crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you then. When you look at the Sacred Host, you understand how much Jesus loves you now. -St. Teresa of Calcutta Sunday 6 am to 10 am, 5 to 11 pm Monday 8 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, 5 pm, 8-11 pm Tuesday 7 am, 3-5 pm, 10 and 11 pm Wednesday 6 and 7 am, 5 and 6 pm, 8-11 pm Thursday 7 am, 9 and 10 am, pm, 3-5 pm, 7 pm, 10 and 11 pm Friday 7-9 am, 12 and 1 pm, 5-11 pm Saturday 6-7 am, 10 and 11 am, 1-11 pm The chapel is open from 6 am to midnight.
