3 STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION Today s Meditation The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God we want control, power, and answers to all of life s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The man and the woman ate the fruit of the one tree that God had told them to avoid, and their shame overtook them (Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7). Psalm Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned (Psalm 51). Second Reading Death reigned from Adam to Moses, but now grace and life abound in Christ Jesus (Romans 5:12-19 [12, 17-19]). Gospel Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and there he fasted for forty days and forty nights (Matthew 4:1-11). 5 PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH TO OBTAIN A CONVERSION O GLORIOUS PATRIARCH St. Joseph, who merited to be called just by the Holy Ghost, I urgently recommend to the soul of [Name], which Jesus redeemed at the price of His Precious Blood. Thou knowest how deplorable is the state and how unhappy the life of those who have banished this loving Savior from their hearts, and how greatly they are exposed to the danger of losing Him eternally. Permit not, I beseech thee, that a soul so dear to me should continue any longer in its evil ways; preserve it from the danger that threatens it; touch the heart of the prodigal child and conduct him back to the bosom of the fondest of fathers. Abandon him not, I implore thee, till thou hast opened to him the gates of the Heavenly city, where he will praise and bless thee throughout eternity for the happiness which he will owe to thy powerful intercession. Amen. THE REASONS ST. JOSEPH IS THE PATRON OF THE DYING There are three reasons why St. Joseph is the special patron of the dying: 1) He is the foster father of the Eternal Judge, Who can refuse him no request. 2) He is terrible to the demons; the Church calls him the Terror of demons and Conqueror of Hell. 3) His own death was most beautiful, for he died in the arms of Jesus and Mary; this is the principal reason why he is the patron of a happy death; the death of no other Saint was so happy, so glorious. St. Francis de Sales was of the opinion that St. Joseph died of the love of God; St. Alphonsus Liguori considered this most reasonable. CYO NEWS CYO is open to all 7-12 th graders who are interested in learning more about their faith and having some fun at the same time! Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone has granted a general dispensation from the obligation of abstaining from meat on March 17, 2017, to all members of the Catholic Church within the Diocese of Charleston. Catholics fast and abstain during Lent to unite in the suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to prepare to rejoice in his Resurrection. In lieu of this, the bishop recommends that anyone who avails himself or herself of the dispensation substitute another form of penance, prayer, or almsgiving to the poor in its place at another time during the remainder of the Lenten season.
