4 February 10, 2019 Pray With Us W e R e m e m b e r Our Deceased Relatives and Friends St. Michael Church Sharonville, Ohio Our Recently Departed St. Michael Parish extends its sympathy to the families of the following loved ones: parishioner Mary Grochowski, Josephine Bove, mother of parishioner Julie Boemker, and Mary Mitsch, mother of parishioner Paul Mitsch. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. I n T h i s W e e k s G o s p e l February 10, 2019 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Do you have enough? Many of us come from a nation of material abundance. We have all the things we could possibly need not only to survive, but to thrive - food, shelter, mental ability, income, access to medical care. Most people in human history lived with far less than we. So why are we so dissatisfied? Some Christians can be drawn to the "prosperity Gospel." This is the idea that following God will bring us material abundance in this life. That surely seems to be the story of today's Gospel! Peter and his friends chose - with some faith - to put out their nets a final time at Jesus' command. "They caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking." What gift! What abundance! What prosperity! Peter and his friends caught more fish than they'd ever seen. Yet what is their response to this material abundance, this gift from God? They leave it behind. "When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him." Praying for God to meet our physical, material needs is not a bad thing! Jesus himself includes "give us this day our daily bread" in the prayer he teaches his disciples. The question is, how do we respond when our prayers are answered? Do we thank God briefly, or perhaps ignore Him completely and move on with our lives? Or do we respond as Peter did? "God... You showed up in an area that has no bearing on my eternal salvation. You gave me a gift I didn't even really need. You love me! You really do love me." Is our gratitude only surface level? Or do we allow ourselves, like Peter did, to respond with wonder, awe, and deeper discipleship? LPI 4

5 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pray With Us F r o m t h e P a s t o r A question I get asked from time to time is: What type of Bible should I be using? Is there a translation that is preferred over others? To give this type of question complete coverage, I d have to write several pages! But here is a brief description of the various translations available. The first principle to remember is to look for a translation which has the Deuterocanonical books often, it will be labeled as a Catholic edition. This points to the basic difference between a Catholic and a Protestant Bible a Catholic Bible has several additional books in the Old Testament which we accept as part of Scripture, but are not accepted as such by most Protestant Churches. The most common translation used in the Church is the New American Bible (NAB), which is the basis for the Lectionary (from which we take our readings at Mass). Prior to the 1940s, Catholic Bibles were always translated from the Latin Vulgate, which remains the official Bible of the Catholic Church. When Pope Pius XII allowed translations from the original Hebrew and Greek, new translations were begun. In the US Church, the New American Bible first appeared in 1970, was revised beginning in 1986, and was ultimately completed in 2011, and is sometimes now called the New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE). Another good translation is the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV). An ecumenical translation (including Catholic scholars), its tone and style are similar to the NAB, but instead of coming originally from the Latin Vulgate, this Bible owes its beginning to the King James Bible, or Authorized Version. Next week, I ll offer a few more good translations, along with some suggestions for study editions of the Bible that I have found helpful. Fr. Ed M a s s C o n f u s i o n E x p l a i n e d What is the purpose for making the sign of the cross on our forehead, lips and heart when the priest proclaims to the assembly, A reading from the Holy Gospel according to After the gifts of bread and wine are placed on the altar, what is the reason for the priest having the acolyte (server) pour water over his fingers prior to the Eucharistic Prayer? Jesus instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist (Mass) on Holy Thursday in the company of his apostles. Since then, Catholics have gathered in community every Sunday to commemorate and celebrate the Eucharist, the source and summit of the Christian life. (Lumen Gentium, 11). When we understand the symbolism behind an action, it takes on a deeper significance and meaning, enhancing our participation in the Mass. Beginning with the March 5 th bulletin, we will begin a series of short articles explaining various parts of the Mass: the prayers, symbols, history, etc. We hope you will take the opportunity to read and reflect on these articles to deepen your understanding of our Sunday worship as a community. Do you have a question about the Mass? If so, Tom Giordano, D.Min, Pastoral Associate at tom@saintmichaelchurch.net. Fr. If so, plan on attending an upcoming talk on Wednesday, February 27 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at St. Michael Parish. Migration is a part of the human experience. We even find it at the heart of many biblical stories, such as the journeys of Abraham, the Exodus, and the Holy Family. What does the Church officially teach about the rights and responsibilities of migrants as well as how we are to "welcome the stranger" today? Come hear a presentation from Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio on Catholic teaching on migrants, a personal migration story, and an expert overview of the U.S. immigration system. Presenters will be Tony Stieritz (Catholic Charities COO), Allison Herre (Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services Director), and a local migrant. 10 February 10, 2019 Children s Corner G r a d e s K - 1 Gospel Reflection You and your friends fished all night long without any luck at all. Then Jesus comes along. He says, "Throw your nets in the deepest water." You say, "We've been fishing out there all night. We haven't caught a single fish. However, I'll do as you say." Then you catch so many fish, the nets begin to rip apart. Jesus told Simon Peter, "Don't be afraid! Now you will bring in people, instead of fish." Prayer Lord, help me bring others closer to you. Something to Draw Draw Simon Peter's boat with his nets overflowing with fish. Mission for the Week I will remind my family to ask God for answers to their problems. St. Michael Church Sharonville, Ohio G r a d e s 2-3 Sharing the Gospel Jesus was powerful enough to control the fish in the sea! Peter caught no fish by himself one night. With Jesus' help, Peter caught more fish than his boat could carry. When Peter saw what Jesus did, he was afraid. How would you feel? Prayer Dear God, your power is so amazing! Something to Draw Draw fish swimming into Peter's net. Mission for the Week With your parents, try turning on a lamp while it isn't plugged in. It doesn't work, does it? That's how we need to be plugged in to God, to do his work. Without him, what we try will never work. 10
