4 February 17, 2019 Pray With Us W e R e m e m b e r Our Deceased Relatives and Friends St. Michael Church Sharonville, Ohio Our Recently Departed St. Michael Parish extends its sympathy to the families of the following loved one: former St. Michael pastor Fr. Robert J. Thorsen. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. I n T h i s W e e k s G o s p e l February 17, 2019 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time What an audience Jesus has in today's Gospel! "A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of people from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon." Disciples, pagans, and devout Jews gathered together to hear Jesus speak in the Sermon on the Mount. All of these people had something in common. God was someone to be bargained with, and if God liked you, you were rewarded with good fortune. This Sunday, Jesus tells us a different story. "Woe to you who are rich... who are filled now... who laugh... when all speak well of you. Blessed are you who are poor... you who are now hungry... when people hate you and when they exclude you and insult you." Jesus completely flips the script on what it means to be blessed by God. What he proclaims as "woe" are states of life we often strive for, and "blessed" are the states we work hard to avoid! Jesus is concerned with the kingdom of God and the world to come, not the typical structures of power and privilege. The word "now" appears often in these statements. Why? If you are well "now," that's beside the point. To be rich in this life has no direct bearing on your immortal soul. If you're struggling "now," that's not an indication that God has forgotten you or that - in light of eternity - you're worse off than someone else. In fact, it could be an indicator that you're enduring something that will bring you to a place of greater, eternal joy in the future. This Sunday, consider your priorities. Who do we reject as not blessed, and thereby inflict woe upon ourselves? When we encounter difficult situations in our own lives, do we see them as opportunities to remember God and lean on His mercy and grace? LPI 4

5 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pray With Us F r o m t h e P a s t o r As I mentioned last week, I wanted to offer a couple more good translations of the Bible, along with some good study aids. One translation I have enjoyed is the New Jerusalem Bible. This was originally a translation into French from the original Greek and Hebrew; the French was then translated into English (and was called the Jerusalem Bible ). Many English-speakers liked this translation for the richness that the original French seemed to give it. The New Jerusalem Bible is a retranslation by the original scholar committee directly into English from the source languages, but it retains the French flavor. Another translation is called the Tanak. This is a translation of the original Hebrew scriptures (thus omitting the Old Testament writings which are originally in Greek these are those books which are not in Protestant translations) by the Jewish Publication Society. This is widely regarded as an exceptional translation; it would be valuable from a Christian standpoint to read the Old Testament from a Jewish perspective. As for study guides, I have long used the Catholic Study Bible published by the Oxford University Press. Originally published with the NAB, it was updated and republished when the NAB was revised (the NABRE). There are a number of informative articles about the Catholic way of reading scripture, along with helpful commentary. Similar to this is the Little Rock Catholic Scripture Study Bible; a companion to the Little Rock Scripture Study series, it also has helpful articles and commentary. Finally, I d also recommend the Catholic Youth Study Bible. Written for a young audience (roughly 7th grade through high school or even college-age), its commentary is particularly helpful to those learning about the faith. Like the Little Rock Bible, it comes with either the NAB or NRSV translation. Fr. Ed M a s s C o n f u s i o n E x p l a i n e d What is the purpose for making the sign of the cross on our forehead, lips and heart when the priest proclaims to the assembly, A reading from the Holy Gospel according to After the gifts of bread and wine are placed on the altar, what is the reason for the priest having the acolyte (server) pour water over his fingers prior to the Eucharistic Prayer? Jesus instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist (Mass) on Holy Thursday in the company of his apostles. Since then, Catholics have gathered in community every Sunday to commemorate and celebrate the Eucharist, the source and summit of the Christian life. (Lumen Gentium, 11). When we understand the symbolism behind an action, it takes on a deeper significance and meaning, enhancing our participation in the Mass. Beginning with the March 5 th bulletin, we will begin a series of short articles explaining various parts of the Mass: the prayers, symbols, history, etc. We hope you will take the opportunity to read and reflect on these articles to deepen your understanding of our Sunday worship as a community. Do you have a question about the Mass? If so, Tom Giordano, D.Min, Pastoral Associate at tom@saintmichaelchurch.net. Fr. Ed Burns, Pastor Brian Bisig, Director of Music and Liturgy Jeremy Helmes, MA (Theological and Ministerial Studies) Tom Giordano, Pastoral Associate, D.Min. 5

7 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Grow in Faith With Us Adults B i b l e S t u d y w i t h F a t h e r E d Do you sometimes wonder what you can do to enter into what happens at Mass on the Lord s Day better? To prepare better for the celebration of the Eucharist? Here s an idea: come to our Wednesday noon Bible Study sessions. We spend time in prayer, reflection, and conversation. Everyone is welcome to the Ministries Room at 12:00 noon on Wednesday. L e a r n i n g A b o u t O u r C a t h o l i c F a i t h Are you, or someone you know, interested in learning about the Catholic Faith? Our Catholic Inquiry Sessions (CIS) may be for you. Participants share their questions and experiences of God on their journey of faith. Sessions are held on scheduled Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. in the school library. St. Michael has a year-round process for bringing new members into the Church. A person can enter the discernment process at any time of the year! The Rite of Reception into the Church can be celebrated throughout the liturgical year when a Candidate (someone who has been previously baptized in another faith) is ready to be received into the Church. A Catechumen (someone who has not been baptized) is received into the Church at the Easter Vigil. To learn more about the process, contact Tom Giordano, D.Min, Pastoral Associate, at ext. 302 or at tom@saintmichaelchurch.net. T h e C a t h o l i c C h u r c h R e s p o n s e t o I m m i g r a t i o n Curious about the Catholic Church response to the immigration issue facing our country, or how are we are called to respond as faithful Catholics? If so, plan on attending an upcoming talk on Wednesday, February 27 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at St. Michael Parish. Migration is a part of the human experience. We even find it at the heart of many biblical stories, such as the journeys of Abraham, the Exodus, and the Holy Family. What does the Church officially teach about the rights and responsibilities of migrants as well as how we are to "welcome the stranger" today? Come hear a presentation from Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio on Catholic teaching on migrants, a personal migration story, and an expert overview of the U.S. immigration system. Presenters will be Tony Stieritz (Catholic Charities COO), Allison Herre (Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services Director), and a local migrant. For more information or to RSVP, please call the Parish Office at or Tom Giordano, D.Min., Pastoral Associate at tom@saintmichaelchurch.net. C o p i n g W i t h G r i e f Have you recently lost a loved one? Join us on Wednesday, February 27, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. for a presentation entitled Coping with Grieving: a Workshop to Facilitate Healing. General information about grieving and strategies for coping will be discussed. Reading materials will be provided. Our presenter for the morning is Dr. Catherine Strathern, a member of St. Michael Parish. Catherine earned a master s degree in clinical psychology from Xavier University and a doctorate from the University of Cincinnati. RSVP by Monday, February 25, by calling the Parish Office at or by ing Tom Giordano at tom@saintmichaelchurch.net. 7
