JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ORATORICAL FESTIVAL The local parish level of the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival will follow Divine Liturgy today, Sunday, February 23, 2014, and afterward the Holy Trinity PTA will host a cake and juice reception in the Coffee Room. Those selected to represent the community will travel to Saints Markella and Demetrios Church in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, on Saturday, March 22, to participate at the district level. Welcome and Continental Breakfast will begin at 9:00 am, and festival speeches will begin at 10:00 am. CALLING ALL HERB GARDENERS! This spring the Greek Festival Committee is asking all herb gardeners to include extra plantings of thyme, basil, rosemary, and oregano, which later can be sold at the Festival. These herbs are most welcome additions in the Greek Grocery. If you have any questions regarding this project, please contact Stacy Rico at FESTIVAL CHAIRPERSONS MEETING The first 2014 Greek Festival chairpersons meeting will be March 6, 2014, at 7:30 pm in the Coffee Room. See you there! FESTIVAL PASTRY WORKSHOPS Pastry preparations for the 2014 Greek Festival will continue this Tuesday, February 25, and Wednesday, February 26, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. Lunch will be provided. Workshops will be every Tuesday and Wednesday, except Mardi Gras Week and Holy Week. The Pastry Committee Chairpersons invite all ladies and gentlemen to assist in the preparation of the pastries. HOUSE BLESSINGS Father Dean Gigicos blessed several homes on Friday, February 21, and will continue today, Sunday, February 23, as well as tomorrow, Monday, February 24. He kindly asks that you do not feed the priest. PTA SOUPER FUNDRAISER Holy Trinity PTA is hosting its Annual Lenten Soup Fundraiser. SPECIAL FURNITURE REQUEST FULFILLED Elaine Nugent wishes to thank the Holy Trinity Cathedral parishioners for providing the furniture that was requested for a family in our community. PTA MARDI GRAS STYLE FAMILY DAY Everyone is invited to join the fun at the Mardi Gras Style Family Day this afternoon, Sunday, February 23, after church services. The event is sponsored by Steve Psarellis. Lunch will be served and will include jambalaya, shrimp Creole, mini muffalettas, and king cake. Also, there will be a special craft activity for the kids, who will make shoebox Mardi Gras floats. If that were not enough, all February and March birthdays and name days will be celebrated. 2 PHILOPTOCHOS MEMBERSHIP Many ladies have already joined Philoptochos during our annual Philoptochos Membership Campaign, which has been in full swing since January 1. If you have not yet joined, please pause a moment to remember the mission of Philoptochos. We know your time is limited, but you can tailor your role in our organization to make it fit your life. We welcome your membership, whether you are able to be an active member or not. Even if you can do one thing during the year, know that your entire membership fee goes to support charities at the National, Metropolis, or local level. We also welcome the support of the men of our community. Our chapter wins an award at every National Philoptochos Convention for fulfilling 100% of our commitments to the National Philoptochos. Some of the organizations we serve are the Children s Medical Fund, Hellenic College Holy Cross School of Theology, IOCC, and Autism. Many times, when there is a national emergency such as a flood, earthquake, or tornado, we give additional money to the Emergency Fund. This year our chapter gave $1,000 to the Hurricane Sandy Disaster Fund. We also give to the Philanthropy funds of the Metropolis of Atlanta, as well as to clergy education and the youth summer camp. Help expand our outreach and help us to continue to give immediate donations, hope, and love when a tragedy happens. Become a member and contribute to existing initiatives, develop new programs, or identify a need that has not been met. Give hope to the hopeless and make a difference in people s lives. See what can be accomplished when women work together towards philanthropic goals and a common mission. PHILOPTOCHOS AGAPE AWARD Philoptochos Elpis is honored to announce our chapter s All Generations Accomplishing Philanthropic Endeavors (A.G.A.P.E.) Award nominee Mary Kontos. Mary is a truly extraordinary and worthy member of our Ladies Philoptochos Society. Nine ladies will be chosen nationally, and their names will be announced at the National Philoptochos Convention in July. Ionian Village summer camping programs are open to teenagers, who have completed grades 8 through 12. The sessions allow campers to experience life in a fully Orthodox environment as they travel to historic churches and religious sites across Greece. The Orthodox Faith is at the heart of the Ionian Village program. Session 1: June 23 - July 12, 2014 Session 2: July 20 - August 8, 2014 AHEPA The recently elected officers of AHEPA are in the process of restructuring the local chapter. With this goal in mind, they are seeking individuals interested in joining the organization, as well as inactive members interested in reinstating. Your membership will allow you to partake in the activities slated during the national AHEPA convention this summer. SATURDAY OF SOULS Orthodoxy believes that through our prayers, those "who have fallen asleep in the faith and the hope of the Resurrection" continue to have opportunity to grow closer to God. Therefore, the Church prays constantly for her members, who have died in Christ. We place our trust in the love of God and the power of mutual love and forgiveness. We pray that God will forgive the sins of the departed faithful and that He will receive them into the company of Saints in the heavenly Kingdom. The Orthodox Church remembers the departed in the prayers of every Divine Liturgy. Besides this, there is a Memorial Service in which the Church also remembers the dead. According to tradition, the Memorial Service is offered on the third, ninth, and fortieth day after a death, as well as on the yearly anniversary of the death. In addition to these times, the Memorial Service is always offered for all the faithful departed on four "Saturdays of Souls." These are the two Saturdays preceding Great Lent, the first Saturday of Great Lent, and the Saturday before Pentecost. When the Memorial Service is offered, it is customary for the family of the deceased to bring a dish of boiled wheat to the Church. The boiled wheat is placed on a table in the center of the nave during the Service. The wheat, known as kollyva, is a symbol of the Resurrection. When speaking of the Resurrection, our Lord said: "Unless the grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone, but if it dies it bears much fruit." (John 12:24). Please note that the next Saturday of Souls service will be March 8, 2014, beginning at 9:00 am. Forms for listing names of your loved ones are in the Narthex. HOLY TRINITY YOUTH SOCCER The first spring Holy Trinity Youth Soccer session will be Friday, March 14, at 6:00 pm. The group will meet each Friday evening through May 2, except Holy Week. Meatfare Sunday, also called Sunday of the Last Judgment Today is called Meatfare Sunday because it is the last day meat or poultry is eaten before Easter for those keeping the Lenten Fast. It is also called Sunday of the Last Judgment, which refers to the Gospel lesson (Matthew 25:31-46) in which the Lord tells us that we shall be judged at the end according to the love we have shown for our brother.

THE EPISTLE St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 8:8-13; 9:1-2 Brethren, food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. Only take care lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if anyone sees you, a man of knowledge, at a table in an idol's temple, might he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother's falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall. Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. THE GOSPEL Matthew 25:31-46 The Lord said, "When the Son of man comes in his glory and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' Then he will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.' And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
