1 WELCOME TO ST. PAUL EPISCOPAL CHURCH WELCOME. In the name of Christ, we offer you welcome to this church. May those who sorrow, find comfort; the weary, rest; the troubled, peace; the stranger, friends; the unhappy, joy; and to all, the sense of God s presence in this Holy Place. If you are new to this parish community, please give your name and phone number to the Rector or sign our guest register on the stand in the back of the Church. As our honored guest, we want to welcome you. THE SERVICE. There are two main books used for our service; the smaller red book is the Book of Common Prayer and the larger blue book is the Hymnal. There is also a Gray Hymnal. They can be found in the bookrack on the back of the pew in front of you. A Bible can be found at the ends of the pew. The page / hymn numbers in the service bulletin help you find your place in these service books. We invite you to participate fully in our worship. RECEIVING COMMUNION. Holy Communion in the Episcopal Church is open to all who are comfortable participating in the Communion of the Lord s Table. To receive communion come to the altar rail; kneel or stand with one hand cupped on top of the other hand to receive the consecrated bread. Please take the chalice and drink from it; or you may intinct the bread by dipping it in the consecrated wine. Parents are encouraged to determine when a child is ready to receive communion. All children are invited to the altar rail to receive communion or a blessing. Please feel comfortable doing what is best for you and your child. You reach out to us, surrounding us with your love. You know our deepest needs, even before we ask. Your Holy Spirit intercedes for us, giving voice even to those needs that we struggle to name. In Jesus name, have mercy on us. For those things we have done wrong, forgive us. For our inability to trust, strengthen us. Transform us from our indifference to your will and our unwillingness to fully love our neighbors as ourselves. Help us to live with thankfulness and joy. Assure us of your love and pardon that breaks through every barrier we erect. Help us to know that in you, we are made whole. Amen. Monday Night Adult Forum: October 10 THE COMMAND TO SACRIFICE ISAAC - GENESIS 22:1-19 Many of the stories from Genesis are familiar to Christians. Among these are the story of Cain and Abel, the original sibling rivalry, and Abraham's obedience to the Lord's command to sacrifice his own son. Still, every time we explore them, there is something new to be discovered. Please join us as we explore these two great and haunting stories! Rev. Dr. Brooks Schramm, Kraft Professor of Biblical Studies, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg October 17 HISTORY OF MT. BETHEL CEMETERY Mt. Bethel Cemetery, located next door to St. John Lutheran Church on Locust Street, is the oldest cemetery in Columbia. It has been in continuous use for almost three hundred years. We will hear stories of some of its most famous residents and learn about some of the monuments within its boundaries. Ron Mable Friend of the Cemetery

11 October 24 HOSANNA RINGERS HANDBELL CHOIR Jessica & Friends Community is a faith-based organization that provides services to adults with autism and other intellectual disabilities. The hand bell choir is made up of individuals who are cared for by Jessica & Friends Community. Their performance will be aweinspiring. Pilgrim Journey of Faith: The first course in our Pilgrim Journey Program Turning to Christ will begin on Thursday, November 3 and continue November 10, 27, December 1, 8, 15, 22 (skipping Thanksgiving Day). We will begin at 7:00 p.m. and end at 8:15 p.m. Class will be in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center. The aim of this course is to help people explore what it means to be disciples of Jesus. From the very beginning of his ministry, Jesus called people to follow him and become his disciples. The Church in every generation shares in the task of helping others hear Christ s call to them and follow him. There are materials that each participant will have so you will need to register no later than October 26. Please call the parish office ( ) to register. There is no cost for the course or the workbooks. The course is open to all you do not need to be a member of Saint Paul to participate. Come and bring a friend! OUTREACH MINISTRY Food Donations: You are reminded to bring your food items to church each week so that on the last Sunday of the month we can present them to the Lord for blessing and then give them to our food bank. Whenever you go shopping, please add extra non-perishable items to your order for this parish outreach ministry. Jesus never forgot the last, the lost and the least in his ministry and neither can we. Adult Cereals (less sugar) Peanut Butter Jelly Soups Rice Boxed Potatoes Spaghetti Sauce Anything you can do to help would be deeply appreciated. Food Bank Hours: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 9:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. The Food Bank is closed on holidays. This way we will know what needs to be bought.
