WELCOME TO ST. PAUL'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH WELCOME. In the name of Christ, we offer you welcome to this church. May those who sorrow find comfort; the weary, rest; the troubled, peace; the stranger, friends; the unhappy, joy; and to all, the sense of God s presence in this Holy Place. If you are new to this parish community, please give your name and phone number to the Rector or sign our guest register on the stand in the back of the Church. As our honored guest, we want to welcome you. THE SERVICE. There are two main books used for our service; the smaller red book is the Book of Common Prayer and the larger blue book is the Hymnal. There is also a Gray Hymnal. They can be found in the bookrack on the back of the pew in front of you. A Bible can be found at the ends of the pew. The page / hymn numbers in the service bulletin help you find your place in these service books. We invite you to participate fully in our worship. RECEIVING COMMUNION. Holy Communion in the Episcopal Church is open to all who are comfortable participating in the Communion of the Lord s Table. To receive communion approach the Celebration Altar in two rows. Stand with one hand cupped on top of the other to receive the consecrated bread. Then step to the side and take the chalice and drink from it; or you may intinct the bread by dipping it in the consecrated wine. If you do not wish to receive Holy Communion, please come forward for a blessing (fold your arms across your chest to indicate that you do not wish to receive Holy Communion). Palm / Passion Sunday March 25, :00 a.m. Our Worship Service begins in the bank parking lot if the weather is nice or in the Fellowship Hall of The Columbia Presbyterian Church if it is not. There is a special handout for the Blessing and Procession of Palms which will take place in union with our brothers and sisters of The Columbia Presbyterian Church. When all have gathered in the church, we will sing the Processional. Processional: All Glory, Laud, and Honor Hymn154 Opening Prayer The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ Card Sermon Rev d. J. Prayer Leader: That we who hope to greet Jesus when he comes again be ready and joyful. We have trusted in you, O God. Prayer of Confession Prayer Leader: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. (a moment of silence for the private confession of our sins) All: Gracious God, you know our every grief and our every need. Hear us as we recall the periods of time when our strength failed, when our sorrow led us onto paths of hopelessness and despair. Forgive us when we betray you, when we deny you, and when we scorn you. Wake in us a new steadfastness to your call and presence. Help us stay awake, even when the days are hard and the nights are long. Strengthen us to walk with you in trust, even on a path to the cross. Let your face shine upon us, that we may know your steadfast love and trust in your resurrection promises. In Christ s name, we pray. The Altar Flowers are available for the weeks of April 8, 15, 22, 29. The Sanctuary Candle is available for the weeks of April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. The Bread and Wine is available for the weeks of April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. Prayer Ministry: Please take an active part in our three Core Prayer Ministries: 1) Send those birthday cards to the people who have a birthday in March. The names and dates are on the Prayer Calendar you received and there is also a list on the table in the back of the church. Birthday cards are available in the back of the church for a small donation. 2) Remember your Prayer Partner every day in March. Take the time to pray for them and the needs that they may have. Just remember them and ask God to bless them. 3) The Daily Prayer Intention Calendar was sent out for March. Please use it. Prayer changes lives! Lots of prayer changes lots of lives! Your prayers are heard and answered! Pray always! Wednesday Morning Prayer and Healing Service: Our Wednesday Morning Prayer and Healing Service begins at 9:30 a.m. and is held in the Rector s Office. All are Welcome! Lenten Prayer Support: All active members of the parish were given a Lenten Meditation booklet from ERD and a Lenten Retreat Booklet Into the Desert. These two booklets are a great way to aid you in your daily Lenten Prayer. If you would like additional copies of either of these booklets, please call the parish office at Stations of the Cross: Stations of the Cross will be held on March 30 (Good Friday). They will begin at 12:00 noon. As we have for the last six years we will join once again with our brothers and sisters from Ironville United Methodist Church. The Stations of the Cross is a wonderful service that helps us walk with Jesus the painful way of His cross that he walked for us. It also reminds us of just how much we are loved by our God. Come and pray! This is a great service to bring a guest just a simple song and prayer. Could you not spend just one hour with me in prayer? Palm / Passion Sunday: Palm / Passion Sunday is today, Sunday, March 25. We will begin our celebration with breakfast at The Columbia Presbyterian Church at 8:00 a.m. Following breakfast we will bless the palms and process to the church. The reading for the blessing of palms recounts Jesus entry into Jerusalem. Palms will be distributed as we begin the procession. Our Saturday evening service (March 24) will be held as regularly scheduled at 5:30 p.m. at the Saint John Herr Estate Chapel. The blessing and distribution of the palms will take place at this service also. HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE

Sunday School: Our Sunday School - for children age 4 through age 10 is in session, Sunday, beginning at 8:50 a.m. in the small classroom in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center. As parents we commit to forming our children in the faith, so please sign your child / grandchild up for Sunday School. Jenny Bair and Ericka Sipe are our teachers. At the Sign of Peace, our young people will leave Sunday School and come to the church to join their family for the rest of the Eucharist. OUTREACH MINISTRY Food Donations: You are reminded to bring your food items to church each week so that on the last Sunday of the month we can present them to the Lord for blessing and then give them to our food bank. Whenever you go shopping, please add extra non-perishable items to your order for this parish outreach ministry. Jesus never forgot the last, the lost and the least in his ministry and neither can we. Adult Cereals (less sugar) Peanut Butter Jelly Soups Rice Boxed Potatoes Spaghetti Sauce Anything you can do to help would be deeply appreciated. Food Bank Hours: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 9:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. The Food Bank is closed on holidays. ERD Hope Chests: During Lent, we are called to think of others in need and how we can help them. Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) sponsors many opportunities for us to share with others who are less fortunate. One of the ways is through the Hope Chest. If you would like a Hope Chest, you can pick one up on the table in the back of the church. They should be returned on Easter Sunday, April 1. There will be two Golden Egg awards for those who return the Hope Chest (please remember to put your name on the box). There will be one Golden Egg for the Hope Chest with the most money in it and another Golden Egg for the heaviest Hope Chest. 100% of the money given to Episcopal Relief and Development goes to relief and development projects in our own country and around the world. Please be generous. Greeting Cards: Father Patrick is collecting old greeting cards that adults with autism and other intellectual disabilities can recycle into new greeting cards. Don t throw away your greeting cards just bring them to the church and put them in the box on the back pew. This will be an ongoing outreach ministry project. Thank you. ADMINISTRATION

Parish Office Hours: The Parish Office hours are: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 8:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. The Office is closed on holidays. Use of St. Paul s Facilities: Guideline for Use of The Parish Hall and Church were put in your mailboxes. Please call the Parish Office if you want to reserve the Parish Hall or Church. Reminder: Please remember that when you use the Parish Hall nothing can be put on the walls or the woodwork. Using scotch tape, duct tape, masking tape, and even some types of painter s tape has the possibility of pulling the paint off the wall or damaging the surface. Items can only be placed on the wooden food bank cabinets or the metal kitchen window and its metal surround. Only masking tape or painter's tape can be used on these surfaces. This applies to both parish members and outside groups that use the hall and is clearly stated in the policy outlining use of the parish hall or the church. Thank you. Vestry Covenant: As part of the new Vestry Orientation, Canon Dan Morrow spent time talking about how we, as a Vestry, and as a Parish Family, communicate. Canon Morrow talked about effective and ineffective ways that we can communicate and how the Vestry, and by extension the whole Parish Family, can grow in our ability and willingness to communicate with each other in effective and affirming ways. As part of this Orientation, Canon Morrow presented the Vestry with a Vestry Covenant that spells out how the Vestry will deal with one another and with others in the parish. It commits the Vestry to certain types of behavior that only enhances our life together. After his presentation, the Vestry voted unanimously to accept and sign the Vestry Covenant. It is included here so that you, the members, can see what we the Vestry have committed to and to enable you to hold us accountable if you see any one of us not living up to how we agreed to speak and act with one another and with you. Each member of the parish is encouraged to read this Vestry Covenant and to join us in improving how we communicate with each other both in the Vestry meetings, in our parish life, and even outside our parish activities. If you have any questions or would like to talk about this Vestry Covenant, please see any member of the Vestry.

Building Needs: At the Vestry meeting on Sunday, March 4, the Vestry received information regarding the deferred maintenance on our buildings - both Church and Parish Hall. Here is what they were told: 1. The roof (both buildings) - at the very minimum - needs approximately $225,000 worth of work. This is not to replace the roof but to fix what is in bad shape today. This price was given to us about six (6) years ago so it is very likely much more today. The Vestry back then decided to do $25,000 worth of work each year for 9 years. We did this for two years but could no longer financially sustain continuing. While the slate itself is in decent shape, the ridge lines, the valleys, the gutters, the downspouts, and the areas where the roof meets to front or back of the buildings are in need of replacement or repair. This cost does not include any of the sheathing under the slate. We simply do not know the condition of the sheathing. Fifty years or more of deferred maintenance has caught up to us. A replacement slate roof is well in excess of a million dollars and other replacement options are well in excess of three quarters of a million dollars. 2. The buildings themselves - Thirteen years ago we had a structural engineer examine our buildings and while they found that both our buildings are structurally sound - they did note a number of things that needed to be addressed. One of the major issues was that the mortar holding the stones of the building together was dried out, cracking, and in many places, simply non-existent. Patches that had been made over the years were done with the wrong type of mortar which has only exacerbated the situation. With missing mortar, water can enter the area between the inner and outer wall, freeze and push in the inner wall or push out the outer stones. At this point this has not happened but there have been leaks throughout the buildings that are a result of missing or deteriorated mortar. Thirteen years ago, the cost of repointing both buildings was approximately $400, Over the past two weeks we have had water dripping in the bell tower for even light rains - something that has not happened before. We had a roofer come to take a look and he was unable to access the bell tower because the trap door from the first floor would not open. While standing in the churchyard and looking up at the tower, he noticed that looking through the tower louvers, he could see the sky - you should not be able to see the sky looking through the bell tower louvers. This means that there are either major holes in the roof or that the roof has collapsed (which may explain why the trap door won't open). While there are no formal costs at the moment - repairs, if that is all that is needed, most likely will run $3,000 to $5,000 and if the roof needs to be replaced then we are looking at close to $15, Asbestoses Removal - There is asbestoses in the parish hall basement, the parish hall second floor, and in the church basement. While most of it is still intact, there are areas that are flaking. We don't use either the basement of the parish hall (except for storage) or the basement of the church, but we do use the second floor of the parish hall for the food bank food storage. To be safe and remove all the asbestoses it will cost about $15,000.

Someone said - "Well if we just had more people attending, we would have more income and we could take care of these items." Taking our average Sunday pledge and multiplying that out, a weekly attendance of 500 people would not raise sufficient funds to complete the above needed deferred maintenance. With 500 people you could not raise the needed funds through a capital campaign. While we have very generous givers, we do not have, and never will have, sufficient number of high-income people that have the needed discretionary income to finance the above. As a result of this presentation, Father Patrick appointed the Property Committee to investigate these and other maintenance issues, the cost of repairs / replacement, and options for going forward. This means contacting contractors, getting estimates, talking with the diocese, etc. If anyone would like to join the Property Committee, please see Bill Kaufhold, Chair. While the Property Committee normally meets quarterly, because of the urgency of the situation and the need to report back to the Vestry at the June meeting, there will be more meetings than usual. If you have any questions, please see Bill Kaufhold or Father Patrick Committee Members Needed: There are a number of committees that provide support to the Vestry as they lead the parish. Each of these committees can use members. The Committees of the Vestry are: Finance and Investment (Bev Euculano - Chair); Property (Bill Kaufhold - Chair); Stewardship (Suzanne Ollar - Chair); Inreach & Hospitality (Christine Weinberg - Chair); Outreach Ministry (Chair is open). If you would like to support the parish by being a member of a committee, please see the Chair of the committee. Committee meetings are schedule around the schedules of the committee members. If anyone would like to Chair the Outreach Ministry Committee, please see Father Patrick for more information. OTHER EVENTS Attention Readers: St. Paul has a small library located in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center Middle Classroom. Feel free to borrow a book (or books). When you have finished reading it, please drop your book into the Book Return basket located to the left of the book shelves. We have also included a donation box if you would like to make a contribution. Enjoy! Thanks to Vickie Stump for all her hard work in organizing and setting up our library.
