340 Locust Street Columbia, PA Web site: A Jubilee Ministry Center GOOD NEWS Dec., 2017, Jan., Feb., 2018 I am very discouraged in both our civic and religious conversations because when we disagree we seem always to make it personal. Instead of relying on our arguments, points, facts, opinions, etc. we want to win the discussion, arguement, fight, etc. by attacking the person we disagree with. You can see that in our civic life very clearly. Our politicians no longer agree to disagree, they must win by destroying and discrediting the other. When someone disagrees with a policy we don t respond with the merits of our position, we just want to attack the other person and their reasons and motivations. In our faith life the kingdom of God here on earth it seems that it is not very different. If we FROM FATHER PATRICK disagree with someone on faith, theology, how to read scripture, etc. we make it personal they are evil, they are going to hell, they are a horrible person, I don t like them, I need to make them look bad, etc. It is never enough to just disagree, it seems that we also want to destroy the other at the same time. We don t even seem to want to talk to one another. There are a couple of people in my life who have serious disagreements with me. Last fall, I invited them to sit down and talk through the issues to see if we could come to some understanding if not agreement. One individual refused to return the calls and the other said they would be in touch with a date and time. As Touch. As of now, I am still waiting for those calls. Now, one of them wants to make it personal by attacking me on a broad range of subjects that have nothing to do with the area of disagreement. While this is a personal example there are examples of larger situations that have caused major ruptures in the church. When Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses on the door of the church at Wittenberg (which was a standard protocol for debate topics) all he wanted to do was initiate a dialogue. He was met, not with a response to talk, dialogue, and debate no, he was met with recriminations, ultimatums, excommunications, and personal attacks that included death threats. All done in the name of God to protect an institution a set of rules that had outlived their usefulness and were like a cancer within the church. Today in our civic and faith lives we are repeating the sins of the past.

Someone nails an invitation to debate on the church door (today we use Facebook, Twitter, and other social media) and rather than accept an invitation we go after the one who did the posting. Be it climate change, gun management, addiction it is generally always seen as a challenge not to debate but to destroy. We are all guilty! We are accursed of this sin! We are all at fault! We need to repent of this sin! We are all beloved Children of God and no one should be subject to ridicule, bullying, intimidation, and / or personal attacks for their beliefs or actions. We are called to hate the sin but love the sinner. If you disagree with someone go talk with them as a brother or sister in Christ. Don t go to win, to beat-up, or to destroy. Go to state your case and talk. You may leave still disagreeing but you will leave as a brother or sister in Christ. We don t need to see each other as enemies evil sees to that. Disagree all you want with me, with others, your family, your friends but at the end of the day we are all the same Children of God loved even when we don t get along. Disagree on the issues don t make it personal. 9 RIM PARISH UPDATE For over 17 years the five parishes (St Luke, Mt Joy; Saint Paul, Manheim; Hope, Mt Hope; Saint John, Marietta; and Saint Paul, Columbia) of the Western Rim of the Lancaster Convocation (10 Episcopal parishes in Lancaster County) have been working together in the areas of prayer, education, outreach ministry, and social justice. Over the last 36 months, this multi-parish companion relationship has deepened and become more focused and all of us look to the future with faith and hope. It also has expanded from the five parishes of the Western Rim of Lancaster County to include Bangor Episcopal Church in Churchtown and is now known as the Rim Parishes of the Lancaster Convocation. The word RIM stands for: Resurrection Inspired Ministry. THE COMMITMENT OF SAINT PAUL EPISCOPAL CHURCH, COLUMBIA, PA TO THE MISSION AND MINISTRY OF THE RIM PARISHES OF THE LANCASTER CONVOCATION. Our Lord Jesus Christ wills the unity of his church. On the night of his Last Supper, our Lord prayed: that they may all be one, Father! May they be in us, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they be one, so that the world will believe that you sent me. I gave them the same glory you gave me, so that they may be one, just as you and I are one: I in them and you in me, so that they may be completely one, in order that the world may know that you sent me and that you love them as you love me. (John 17:21-23) Together all Christians are to make every effort to preserve the unity which has the Spirit as its origin and peace as its binding force because: There is but one Body and one Spirit, just as there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all, and works through all and is in all. (Ephesians 4:4-6) We affirm that the Holy Spirit bestows unity and opens us to new possibilities to provide an effective expression of God s love in Christ. The same Spirit calls us to accept the unity already achieved among us and work toward the goal of a more fundamental unity willed by Christ, while acknowledging and respecting the independence and individuality that exists among us. Impelled by the Spirit, the Vestry, Rector, and people of Saint Paul Episcopal Church, Columbia, PA commit ourselves to support events of prayer, outreach, and mission and ministry of the Rim Parishes of the Lancaster Convocation and to formally encourage the six parishes (Saint Paul, Columbia; Saint John, Marietta; Saint Luke, Mt Joy; Saint Paul, Manheim; Bangor, Churchtown; and Hope, Mt Hope) to continue to work together in the cause of the Gospel. We believe that the Spirit calls us now to approve this resolution (approved October, 2011) as a sign of our increased commitment to the support of small parishes. The approval of this resolution is a witness to the one Spirit who will lead all Christians to

RIM PARISH UPDATE (continued) to the fulfillment of our Lord s prayer and is not a declaration of an exclusive relationship among the six parishes nor does it negate our relationships with other Episcopal churches or churches of other denominations that we currently have or will form in the future. Therefore, relying on the faithful love of the Triune God, we commit ourselves to celebrate the unity already achieved through the past years of cooperation and to strengthen the visible unity of the Body of Christ in the Rim Parishes of the Lancaster Convocation. We hereby now commit to: 1. Pray for each other and the unity of our parishes, particularly at the Sunday liturgy (e.g., including each parish and their leadership in the Prayers of the People). 2. Sponsor and participate in seasonal prayer services 3. Engage in shared Christian Formation 4. Promote pulpit exchanges 5. Cooperate in preparation for baptism, confirmation, reception, and marriage 6. Promote events of the other parishes and encourage our members to support these events 7. Learn the history of each parish and their current mission and ministry goals and objectives 8. Encourage the clergy of each parish to share in spiritual, formational and social events 9. Collaborate on issues of evangelization, justice, youth, and social concerns 10. Work whenever possible to support and facilitate future joint efforts among the parishes To further the goals of this resolution, the Outreach Ministry Committee will annually review our commitment and participation and report to the Vestry. May the Holy Spirit, who has brought us to this moment, bring us to every deepening levels of unity and cooperation.

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR CHRISTMAS I Give your heart to Christ. Let Him be at the top of your Christmas list. II Prepare your soul for Christmas. Spend not so much on gifts that your soul is forgotten. III Do not let Santa Claus replace Christ, and rob the day of its spiritual reality. IV Do not burden the receptionist, the mailman, or the merchant, with complaints and demands. V Give yourself with your gift. This will increase its value a hundred fold, and he who receives it, will treasure it forever. VI Do not value gifts received by their cost. Even the least expensive may signify love, which is more priceless than silver and gold. VII Do not neglect the needy. Share your blessings with many who will go hungry and cold unless you are generous. VIII Do not neglect your church. The worship service highlights the true meaning of the season. IX Be as a little child. Not until you have become in spirit as a little one are you ready to enter into the kingdom of Heaven. X Do not forget to share your joy, hope, peace, and faith, with those around you.

GOING TO CHURCH Theodore Roosevelt offered his reasons for going to church in Ladies Home Journal in In this actual work a churchless community, a community where men have abandoned and scoffed at or ignored their religious needs, is a community on the rapid downgrade. It is perfectly true that occasional individuals or families may have nothing to do with church or with religious practices and observances and yet maintain the highest standard of spirituality and of ethical obligation. But this does not affect the case in the world as it now is, any more than that exceptional men and women under exceptional conditions have disregarded the marriage tie without moral harm to themselves interferes with the larger fact that such disregard if at all common means the complete moral disintegration of the body politic. 2. Church work and church attendance mean the cultivation of the habit of feeling some responsibility for others and the sense of braced moral strength which prevents a relaxation of one s own moral fiber. 3. There are enough holidays for most of us which can quite properly be devoted to pure holiday making Sundays differ from other holidays among other ways in the fact that there are fifty-two of them every year On Sunday, go to church. 4. Yes, I know all the excuses. I know that one can worship the Creator and dedicate oneself to good living in a grove of trees, or by a running brook, or in one s own house, just as well as in church. But I also know as a matter of cold fact that the average man does not thus worship or thus dedicate himself. If he stays away from church he does not spend his time in good works or lofty meditation. He looks over the colored supplement of the newspaper. 5. He may not hear a good sermon at church. But unless he is very unfortunate, he will hear a sermon by a good [person] who is engaged all the week long in a series of wearing and humdrum and important tasks for making hard lives a little easier. 6. He will listen to and take pare in reading some beautiful passages from the Bible. And if he is not familiar with the Bible, he has suffered a loss 7. He will probably take part in singing some good hymns. 8. He will meet and nod to, or speak to, good, quiet neighbors He will come away feeling a little more charitably toward all the world, even toward those excessively foolish young men who regard churchgoing as rather a soft performance. 9. I advocate a man s joining in church works for the sake of showing his faith by his works. 10. The man who does not in some way, active or not, connect himself with some active working church misses many opportunities for helping his neighbors, and therefore, incidentally, for helping himself.

Each year, Christians the world over pray for unity among Christian churches. At the Last Supper Jesus prayed that we would be one even as Jesus and the Father are one. Unity among churches does not necessarily mean a unity of organizational structure (since Jesus did not leave a blueprint or organizational chart of the church with the Apostles, he could not have prayed for that). The unity that exists between the Father and Jesus was a unity of mind and heart of reason and love. This year the week of Christian Unity begins on Thursday, January 18 (The Feast of the Confession of Saint Peter) and ends on Thursday, January 25 (The Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul). We will have one service to celebrate this Week of Christian Unity. The service will be Solemn Evening Prayer on Tuesday, January 23 at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church (409 Cherry Street) beginning at 7:00 p.m. This service will be a joint celebration of prayer and praise with Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Saint Paul Episcopal Church, and Saint Peter Roman Catholic Church. Father Kelley, Pastor of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church will be the main celebrant with Father Swamy, Pastor of Saint Peter Roman Catholic Church, assisting and Father Patrick Peters, Rector of Saint Paul Episcopal Church preaching. UPDATE OF THE FALL STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN Our Fall Stewardship Drive kicked-off on the weekend of October 7 & 8 with the first Stewardship Booklet. We continued on Saturday, October 14 with our Annual Stewardship Thank-You Dinner. Stewardship information was distributed to all active members, in mid-october. Father Patrick spoke about stewardship at all weekend services on October 21 & 22. Declaration of Faith Sunday is Sunday, November 19. All 2018 pledge cards should be received by that weekend and offered to the Lord along with our Eucharistic bread and wine. Information regarding the number of pledges received and what they total will be in the next newsletter. If you have not yet returned your pledge card your Declaration of Faith Card please do so as soon as you can. At their January 2018 meeting, the Vestry will approve a Faith Budget for 2018 and it helps us to know what will be given. All Things Come of Thee O Lord; and of Thine own have we given Thee. The question always is do we really believe what we say?

FINANCIAL UPDATE FIRST TEN MONTHS OF 2017 For the first ten months of the year (January through October) our budget and actual income and expenses stand at INCOME Actual YTD Budget YTD Pledge $ 49, $ 47, Non-Pledge 5, , Other 28, , Investments 73, , Operational Grant 13, Total $170, $116, EXPENSES Actual YTD Budget YTD Personnel $100, $102, Operations 9, , Mission 18, , Property 37, , Other 13, , Total $179, $173, Treasurer s Explanation Note: The actual YTD total is so much higher than the Budget YTD because of taking an extra $35, out of the Wells Fargo Investment Savings Account. The church cannot continue to keep taking money out of this account because it will eventually be depleted. We are also behind on our Fair Share Payment. St. Paul still needs to pay $8, to be paid in full for the year. Thank you all for being so generous this past year with keeping up pledges during a very tough economic period of time. We share the abundance of life and of love that God has given us.

OUTREACH MINISTRIES OF ST. PAUL EPISCOPAL CHURCH THE COLUMBIA FOOD BANK UPDATE As of October 31, 2017, The Columbia Food Bank served a weeks worth of food to 1,137 families representing 2,107 individuals and 44,176 meals since January 1, Please continue to bring food each week when you come to church and put it in the baskets by the back pew. Put a few dollars in an envelope, mark it Food Bank, and drop it in the collection, or offer to volunteer at the food bank for a few hours each week or month. Our current economy continues to affect the people at the bottom of the economic ladder the most. Some of the food bank s customers no longer are able to use the food bank because they have moved out of the area due to job loss, home foreclosure, or eviction. Consider the words of Jesus, Whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters you do to me. FREE COMMUNITY BREAKFASTS Our monthly Free Community Breakfasts continue to serve and honor people each month. As of October 31, Saint Paul has served 560 breakfasts since January 1, Our breakfast is the second Saturday of the month. Our partners in these breakfasts (first Saturday of the month Columbia Christian Fellowship and the fourth Saturday when there are five Saturdays Impact Christian Center) have served 705 breakfasts between January 1 and October 31, Volunteers and donations of time are always needed. Come join us to help or just come to breakfast and enjoy the food and the company. MONTHLY FREE COMMUNITY DINNER On the third Saturday of each month (except December and June) the parish sponsors a Free Community Dinner from 5:30 7:00 p.m. in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center. Bill Weinberg, our Dinner Coordinator and Chef can use your help with dessert and drinks and / or your time to come and help serve our brothers and sisters. From January 2017 through October 2017 we have served 510 dinners. Jesus tells us to feed the hungry come help feed the hungry.

MUSIC IN THE EUCHARIST Every once in a while (okay maybe a bit more often) a parishioner will stop me to talk about music as part of our Sunday morning Eucharist. There are two major comments that are made: The first is a comment that goes, why do we sing hymns that I don t know? Well, we try to use hymns that most, if not all, know; however, there are over 700 hymns in our 1982 hymnal and another 700 in the Gray Hymnal. On a regular basis, Tom Hartman, our Director of Sacred Music, Choir Director, and Organist introduces a new hymn one that connects with the readings for the day. My response to those who mention that they don t know a hymn is to just say it along with those who are singing. I don t know every hymn so I will read it along with the singing. To sing is to pray twice so if I just read along it is still praying. Sometimes just reading the words makes the prayer of the words more apparent and you get to a better understanding of the thought and theology of the hymn. The other question is: Why do we sing all the verses? Well, every hymn is a poem. When we read poems we read all stanzas not just a few of them. Try reading Stopping By the Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost and read only verses 1 and 2 or verses 1, 3, & 5, or without the final verse. See what I mean? The poem makes no sense unless you read all of it. So too with the poems of hymns. Take a hymn and read verses 1 & 2 and leave out verses 3 & 4. Or read verses 1, 3, & 5 and see if it makes any sense. In addition, many hymns make very specific theological statements. Verse 1 is about God the Father, verse 2 is about God the Son, and verse 3 is about God the Holy Spirit. If you only sing verse 1 then you are a Unitarian only singing about God the Father and simply ignoring Jesus and the Holy Spirit. So, if you do not know the hymn, read and pray along with those who are singing. You are still praying. If you do not like to sing just pray the hymn by reading the words and let those words speak to you. We sing all the verses because the theology of our poems and the joy that we experience make it honorable and divine.

As with the other sessions with bishops, this will be a study of a passage from Scripture and will include time for conversation. Bishop Ronald Gainer Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg November 27 BIBLE STUDY WITH THE METROPOLITAN According to their website, The Mission of The Orthodox Church in America, the local autocephalous Orthodox Christian Church, is to be faithful in fulfilling the commandment of Christ to Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit It is, of course, a mission shared by all Christians. Metropolitan Tikon looks forward to sharing time with us as we read God s word together. 24 January 15 LITTLE KNOWN FACTS ABOUT COLONIAL LANCASTER COUNTY The diversity of the early settlers in Lancaster County is the focus of this presentation. It includes some background about William Penn and the importance of his stand on religious freedom. Because of this religious freedom, settlers from many religions and European countries chose to move here. This presentation is their story. John Brown grew up in Strausburg and has lived in Maytown for the past thirty-five years. He is a retired business owner whose interest in history led him to research early transportation which inspired him to learn more about Lancaster s early settlers. January 22 THE EPHRATA CLOISTER A VILLAGE LIKE NO OTHER One of America s earliest communal societies, The Ephrata Cloister was founded in1732 by German settlers seeking spiritual goals rather than earthly rewards. Gathered in unique European-style buildings, the community consisted of celibate brothers and sisters, and a married congregation of families. The community reached its peak in 1750 followed by a period of gradual decline. Come and take a virtual tour of this unique and fascinating historical site.
