WELCOME TO ST. PAUL EPISCOPAL CHURCH WELCOME. In the name of Christ, we offer you welcome to this church. May those who sorrow, find comfort; the weary, rest; the troubled, peace; the stranger, friends; the unhappy, joy; and to all, the sense of God s presence in this Holy Place. If you are new to this parish community, please give your name and phone number to the Rector or sign our guest register on the stand in the back of the Church. As our honored guest, we want to welcome you. THE SERVICE. There are two main books used for our service; the smaller red book is the Book of Common Prayer and the larger blue book is the Hymnal. There is also a Gray Hymnal. They can be found in the bookrack on the back of the pew in front of you. A Bible can be found at the ends of the pew. The page / hymn numbers in the service bulletin help you find your place in these service books. We invite you to participate fully in our worship. RECEIVING COMMUNION. Holy Communion in the Episcopal Church is open to all who are comfortable participating in the Communion of the Lords' Table. To receive communion, please form two lines in the center aisle and approach the front of the altar. Please stand with one hand cupped on top of the other to receive the consecrated bread from the Celebrant. Then step to the side to the Eucharistic Minister and take the chalice and drink from it; or you may intinct the bread by dipping it in the consecrated wine. If you do not wish to receive Holy Communion, please come forward for a blessing (fold your arms across your chest to indicate that you do not wish to receive Holy Communion). Return to your pew by way of the side aisles. The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost October 1, :00 a.m. Opening Hymn All Hail the Power of Jesus Name! 10 PRAYER AND WORSHIP The Altar Flowers are available for the weeks of October 8, 15, 22, 29. The Sanctuary Candle is available for the weeks of October 8, 15, 22, 29. The Bread and Wine are available for the weeks of October 8, 15, 22, 29. Choir Returns: Because our choir is so small they will only be singing 15 times during the coming year - for our special celebrations. The choir can always use more members, so if you would like to join, please let Tom Hartman know. Rehearsals on Thursday about once a month usually before the Sunday the Choir is singing. The choir will be singing October 29 (500th Anniversary of the Reformation); November 5 (All Saints Sunday); December 24 (Christmas Eve); January 29 (Conversion of Saint Paul); February 14 (Ash Wednesday); March 18 (Feast of Saint Patrick); March 25 (Palm / Passion Sunday); March 29 (Maundy Thursday): March 30 (Good Friday); March 31 (Easter Vigil - here at Saint Paul); April 1 (Easter); May 6 (Choir Festival); May 10 (Ascension Thursday); May 20 (Pentecost). We really could use additional voices - what is 15 times a year for rehearsal and celebration. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Prayer Ministry: Please take an active part in our three Prayer Ministries: 1) Send those birthday cards to the people who have a birthday in October. The names and dates were on the Prayer Calendar you received and there is also a list on the table in the back of the church. Cards are available in the back of the church or through the parish office for a small donation. 2) Remember your prayer partners every day in October. Take the time to pray for them and the needs that they may have. Just remember them and ask God to bless them. 3) The Daily Prayer Calendar was sent out for October. Please use it. Prayer changes lives! Lots of prayer changes lots of lives! Your prayers are heard and answered! Pray always! Needed Eucharistic Visitor: We are in need of one or more persons to take Communion to our shut-ins on a regular basis at least twice a month. If you would like to take on this ministry, please see Father Patrick. Because he is part-time, we need a layperson to fill in. We have at least four people who are in nursing homes or are home-bound. Please pray about taking on this ministry. Training will be provided. Let Father Patrick know that you are interested. Thank you. Wednesday Morning Prayer and Healing Service Resumes: Our Wednesday Morning Prayer and Healing Service begins at 9:30 a.m. and is held in the Rector s Office. All are Welcome!

LARC Vespers: Each year LARC (Lutheran, Anglican, and Roman Catholic) who are in Covenant with one another, gather together to pray Vespers. This year the LARC Vespers will be held in the United Seminary Chapel in Gettysburg on Sunday, October 22 beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Vespers wlll commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation; but more importantly, celebrate the unity that we have achieved over the last years. Father Patrick will be going, so anyone who would like to ride with him, just let him know either directly or through the parish office. Baptisms: On Sunday, November 5 we will celebrate the Feast of All Saints. This day is also a great day to celebrate Baptism. If you would like to be Baptized or have a child / grandchild Baptized, please call the parish office. Father Patrick will meet with you / parents prior to the day. CHRISTIAN FORMATION Sunday School: Our Sunday School - for children age 4 through age 10 is in session, Sunday, beginning at 8:50 a.m. in the small classroom in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center (not the Chapel). As parents we commit to forming our children in the faith, so please sign your child / grandchild up for Sunday School. Jenny Bair and Ericka Sipe are our teachers again this year. At the Sign of Peace, our young people will leave Sunday School and come to the church to join their family for the rest of the Eucharist. Youth Group Christian Formation: Our Youth Group - ages will have Christian Formation meetings this year in addition to their regular Youth Group Meetings. Father Patrick has worked with them and their parents to work out the best days and times (more information will be available over the next few weeks). They also will be invited and encouraged to participate in many of the Monday Night Adult Forum sessions especially the ones that can support their Christian Formation growth. Monday Night Adult Forum: For the 13th year, Saint John Lutheran, Saint Paul Episcopal, and Saint John Herr Estate Retirement Community will join together to sponsor the Monday Night Adult Forum. It begins on Monday, October 2. We have been hard at work to put together a wonderful array of topics and speakers. Full details will be in the Good News that was distributed in mid-august and a brochure was put in your mailboxes. Remember - Christian Formation is a "life-long" process. LARC Day of Dialogue: Each year LARC (Lutheran, Anglcian, and Roman Catholic) as part of our Covenant, gather in dialogue with one another and with others to celebrate what unites us and discuss what still divides us. This Day of Dialogue is on Monday, October 23 beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 3:00 p.m. at the Bishop Keeler Center, Harrisburg. If you would like to go, please let the parish office know. The parish will pay the registration fee and Father Patrick will drive any who wish to go.

-MONDAY NIGHT ADULT FORUM SCHEDULE- October 2 BIBLE STUDY WITH THE BISHOP (Episcopal) Regardless of our denominational affiliation, we are all one in Christ. 13 OUTREACH MINISTRY Food Donations: You are reminded to bring your food items to church each week so that on the last Sunday of the month we can present them to the Lord for blessing and then give them to our food bank. Whenever you go shopping, please add extra non-perishable items to your order for this parish outreach ministry. Jesus never forgot the last, the lost and the least in his ministry and neither can we. Adult Cereals (less sugar) Peanut Butter Jelly Soups Rice Boxed Potatoes Spaghetti Sauce Anything you can do to help would be deeply appreciated. Food Bank Hours: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 9:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. The Food Bank is closed on holidays. Free Community Breakfast: In order to help coordinate the generous donations to our Free Community Breakfast on Saturday, October 14, 2017, there is a sign-up sheet in the parish hall on which you can indicate what items and/or time you will donate. This way we will know what needs to be bought. Free Community Dinner: In order to help coordinate the generous donations to our Free Community Dinner on Saturday, October 21, 2017, there is a sign-up sheet in the parish hall on which you can indicate what desserts, beverages, and/or time you will donate. This way we will know what needs to be bought. Episcopal Relief and Development: Included elsewhere in the bulletin is a flyer from Episcopal Relief and Development seeking donations for the victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria. Also included in last week s bulletin was an envelope for making your donation. Extra envelopes are on the table in the back of the church. Please be generous. Greeting Cards: Father Patrick is collecting old greeting cards that adults with autism and other intellectual disabilities can recycle into new greeting cards. Don t throw away your greeting cards just bring them to the church and put them in the box on the back pew. This will be an ongoing outreach ministry project. Thank you. ADMINISTRATION Parish Office Hours: The Parish Office hours are: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 8:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. The Office is closed on holidays. Use of St. Paul s Facilities: Guideline for Use of The Parish Hall and Church were put in your mailboxes. Please call the Parish Office if you want to reserve the Parish Hall or Church.

Reminder: Please remember that when you use the Parish Hall nothing can be put on the walls or the woodwork. Using scotch tape, duct tape, masking tape, and even some types of painter s tape has the possibility of pulling the paint off the wall or damaging the surface. Items can only be placed on the wooden food bank cabinets or the metal kitchen window and its metal surround. Only masking tape or painter's tape can be used on these surfaces. This applies to both parish members and outside groups that use the hall and is clearly stated in the policy outlining use of the parish hall or the church. Thank you. Vestry Meeting: The Vestry will meet on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 10:45 in the Groome Room. OTHER EVENTS 500th Anniversary of the Reformation: 2017 is the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation - that time when Martin Luther posted his 95 Thesis so that reform of the church could be discussed. Much like our civic life today, no one was willing to sit down and talk. They just reacted and today we have a fractured Body of Christ. Over the last 100 years, and more so in the last 50 years, the various Christian denominations began talking with one another to bridge the divide created so many years ago. In October 2017 we as a Parish Family will have the opportunity to participate in four special events remembering and commemorating the Reformation: our own Reformation Service; a joint service of Reformed Churches at Saint John Lutheran Church, the Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Catholic Solemn Vespers, and the Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Catholic Day of Dialogue. Details about dates, times, and locations are available elsewhere in this bulletin. Please plan on joining together to pray, learn, and remember together. Lancaster Convocation Meeting: The Lancaster Convocation will meet for its pre-diocesan Convention Meeting on Tuesday, October 3 at St. John Episcopal Church, Marietta. Pre-meeting snacks at 5:30 p.m. Meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. Youth Group Meeting: The Youth Group will meet on Sunday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m. in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center. All youth ages are invited to attend. Bring your friends. Rim Parish Steering Committee: The Rim Steering Committee will meet on Tuesday, October 10 in the Undercroft of Saint Luke (Mt Joy) at 6:30 p.m. All are invited to attend and participate in discussion about Rim activities. Stewardship Thank You Dinner: On Saturday, October 14 at 5:00 p.m. in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center, we will have our annual Stewardship Thank You Dinner. This catered dinner is to thank you for all the time, talent, and treasure that you give to the Parish Family of Saint Paul. There will be no asking for money only thanks for all you do. There will be games and

prizes. Since it is a catered dinner, we need to know how many will be attending - please sign up on the Sign-Up Board in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center. Reformation Service & Pork and Sauerkraut Dinner: On Sunday, October 29 at 3:00 p.m. at Saint John Lutheran Church. 500 years ago Martin Luther asked for dialogue over abuses he say in the Church. Very much like in our society today, no one wanted to sit down and discuss the issues - everyone went to their corner and hurled insults and condemnations again one another. 500 years later the churches have spent a lot time (over 100) talking with one another and found that while there are differences that remain, we have made great progress on the unity that Jesus prayed for at the Last Supper. On Sunday, October 29 there will be a service of commemoration of the beginning of the Reformation and a celebration of how far we have come to unity - A Journey on the Way. Following the service at Saint John Lutheran, we will have a time of fellowship and conversation with a pork and sauerkraut dinner in their parish hall. In order to have sufficient food, please sign up on the sheet on the Sign-Up Board in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center. Volunteers Needed for the Christmas Cookie Sale: We know - it is not even Halloween and we are talking Christmas. But we need volunteer bakers for the Annual Parish Christmas Cookie Sale. Bev Euculano and Deb Wasche are the coordinators this year and are looking for all the bakers they can find. If you would like to help, please call the office and leave your name and phone number. It would be helpful to know what is being baked so we can ensure a wide variety of choices. New Address: Emily Sipe is now attending Elizabethtown College. Her address is 1728 Baugher Avenue, Elizabethtown, PA Best Wishes Emily in this next chapter of your life! SOCIAL EVENTS Parish Halloween Pot-Luck Supper: On Saturday, October 28 from 5:00-7:00 p.m., we will gather for our Halloween Pot-Luck Supper in the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center. We ask each person to bring an entree, salad, side dish, or dessert to share. The parish will provide the beverages. Costumes are not required; but they are always fun. Come celebrate the Eve of All Saint's Day.
