340 Locust Street Columbia, PA Web site: A Jubilee Ministry Center GOOD NEWS JUNE, JULY, AUGUST, 2016 FROM THE RECTOR As we approach June 1, 2016 which is the 13 th Anniversary of my call to Saint Paul as your Rector I am given to prayer and remembrance of the past; but I am also given to prayer and discernment about the future. Remembrance: The joyous, gracious, and loving welcome to Danielle and me as we started a new path of pilgrimage in our faith journey and in yours. Together as a Parish Family we have had many joys and successes. We restarted the choir, added more weekend and special services, brought back social pot-lucks that brought us together to break bread and share the food of one another, enlarged our feeding ministry through the expanded food bank and our free community meals. We began a number of new fundraisers that allowed us to meet our budgets which permitted us to renovate the main room of the parish hall and the floor in the church. We put in handicapped ramps, reopened the chapel, modernized our office equipment and added a number of new families to our Parish Family. We discovered that about 98% of the Parish Family does 100% of the volunteer work and that almost everyone seems to have found a niche to give back to God in time and talent. We have had strong leadership on the Vestry and in the Wardens. Our staff is hard-working, dedicated, and provides a level of support that is full of goodness and love. On the other hand, there have been some things that did not goes as planned not failures just not successes. While we met most of the goals and objectives of our first Mission and Ministry Plan ( ) we have mostly ignored our current Mission and Ministry Plan ( ). We had grand plans but little followthrough by those who committed to do so. While the generosity of the parish is without equal, financial stewardship still presents challenges both to our hearts and our heads. We moved from full-time clergy leadership to part-time clergy leadership; and while we took steps to minimize the impact of this, there still has been an impact. I am not around as much, I can t visit as much, and I can t be where I am needed as much. On the whole, however, the

Remembrances are good and joyous. I look back on 13 years and praise the Lord for the opportunity to walk with you on our journey to Together Build the Kingdom of God. Discernment: Where do we go from here? Well, we have about 90 members, so the first area of discernment is to determine how we can continue to evangelize and preach the Good News in an effective manner. How can we plant the seeds of faith and be comfortable that someone else might water them, and someone else might make the harvest. It is never about numbers it is always about sharing the Good News to all. We should continue to expand our work in prayer and worship, education, and outreach with other churches especially our brothers and sisters of the Rim Parishes. Working together can multiply all the small numbers in a way that we can impact the world around us in so many ways. But working together sometimes means we have to give up control or tradition, or our way of doing something. But it is not about our control, or our tradition, or our way - it is about God s way We have a bright future as a Parish Family. We must accept the fact that we are small and always will be small. We have to accept the fact that we are in a community that is heavily churched (18 and counting in our area). We have to accept the fact that people today often see the church as unnecessary or only part of their lives at Christmas or Easter or a Baptism or a Wedding or a Funeral. We have to accept the fact that there are a 100 more interesting things to do on a Saturday evening or Sunday morning then coming to church and following a prayer book, singing some hymns, and listening to a sermon (no matter how nice the prayer book, or how glorious the hymns, or how good the sermon). Some would say, You can t accept the reality it s wrong. And it is wrong but to sit around and dream of a full church with plenty of money and lots of kids given our socioeconomic situation is a fool s game. Our hope for the future is for every one of the 90 of us to do what we have been commanded to do go forth and preach and teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to go forth and make disciples to go forth and care for the poor, the oppressed, the marginalized, the forgotten, the least, last, and lost among us. They often won t put butts in the pew or money in the plate but we will have fulfilled our Baptismal Covenant and that is all that matters. Buildings, budgets, staff, clergy, vestry, wardens, convocations, dioceses, structures, canons, prayer books may be seen as most important and maybe that is why we cannot seem to do what we have been called to do. Maybe if we made all that secondary and just preached and lived the Gospel struggling everyday seeking reconciliation everyday seeking forgiveness every day, seeking out our brothers and sisters in need every day. Just maybe the Kingdom of God would be more real than buildings, rules, and budgets. We are a people of the Light but too often we sit in darkness and complain that there is no light. Let us open our eyes to the light that is around us and discern to where God is calling you and I and all of us as a Parish Family. I hope that all of you will take some time to renew and refresh this summer. Once we get through June as a Parish Family everything but VBS in August comes to a stop. So rest and renew your body, your mind, your heart, your soul, and your spirit. Peace! Patrick+

LEADERSHIP FROM THE HEART SEVEN PILLARS OF LONG-TERM, SUCCESSFUL LEADERS No leader ever sets out to finish his race poorly. We all want to hear, Well Done at the end of our race. What are the traits, the attributes, of leaders who Finish Well? Here is Ron Edmondson with seven of them. I love observing leaders. I consistently strive to be a better leader and the best way I know to improve is to watch and learn from other leaders. Whether they have more experience, have learned things I haven t learned or they reinforce principles of leadership I know I improve observing other leaders. In my observations, there are some common traits among the most successful, long-term leaders. It can be easy to lead for a season, or a special project, or even for a decade or more. But, leaders who last and are successful for multiple seasons, multiple decades often in different environments or organizations, with different people these leaders are rare. And, they have shared characteristics. I call these traits the pillars of leadership. Definition of Pillar: 1. A firm upright support for a superstructure. 2. A supporting, integral, or upstanding member or part. In my opinion, I believe you ll find these pillars among all truly great leaders. Here are 7 pillars of long-term, successful leaders I ve observed: 1. Vision Great leaders believe in something bigger than today. They are going somewhere. And, they believe it s a worthy enough vision they are willing to help others get there. They have a vocabulary around their vision. They know how to engage and rally people around the vision. 2. Commitment Great leaders remain rock-solid in their dedication to their cause and their people. They stick to what they feel in their heart God has called them to do. They are unwavered by public opinion or the mood of the day. They aren t only present in the good seasons, but weather the storms of time. Their faith keeps them grounded. 3. Decisiveness Great leaders make decisions even the difficult ones even the unpopular ones. People are willing to follow them, because they know they won t sit on the sidelines while the world passes. They aren t exclusive in making decisions great leaders encourage collaboration but they won t compromise principles either. They are firm in their convictions and willing to stand for them when others won t.

4. Courage Leadership From The Heart (continued) Long-term, successful leaders don t jump ship when times get difficult. In fact, some would say you don t realize you need a leader until times are hard. These leaders confront reality head-on; leading through needed change to a better reality. They don t bow to pressure to conform or fail to say what needs saying. Equally, they aren t hogs of attention. They don t need to receive all the credit in order to lead the people to victory. 5. People Great leaders realize others matter. They know there is no leadership without people to follow. They believe in the value of those on their team and are willing to invest in them. They aren t users of people, they are people-builders. They love people and love to see them succeed. They recognize and reward other people s contributions. 6. Passion It s what gets a leader up in the morning ready to face another day. They believe in their call to lead. They are zealous to see it come to reality. They have a contagious enthusiasm. They are positiveminded and believe and hope in the days ahead. 7. Character Great leaders are strong in what matters most their character. They have integrity, high morals, and qualities others can and want to follow. And, they are consistent over time in protecting their character to be above reproach. Obviously, in my specific role as a pastor, these are pillars worthy of my quest to achieve. I certainly see them in my Savior the best leader I know Jesus. I m striving to get there. I want to possess the pillars of leadership. Who s with me?

FOOD BANK UPDATE Each week our food bank feeds hundreds of people in our community. We have a wide level of support from individuals, churches, business, and other organizations that enable us to keep up with the continued requests for assistance. The economy may be showing signs of recovery but the last, the least, and the lost are still suffering. Even as we struggle, we cannot forget our brothers and sisters who are in pain and in need. Since the beginning of the year through April 30, 2016, the food bank has fed 422 families, which represents 788 individuals and 18,912 meals. The food bank can always use volunteers to help screen clients and bag food (Mondays) and distribute bagged food and restock the shelves (Tuesday and Wednesday). The food bank hours are 9:30 11:30 a.m. Monday through Wednesday. 8 SUMMER VACATIONS Many of you will go on vacation this summer and many will go to places away from Lancaster County and Columbia. When you do, please remember to keep God in your lives by attending church while on vacation. If there is no Episcopal Church where you are on vacation, go to one of a different denomination and experience their prayer and worship. No matter what church you attend, please bring back their bulletin, visitor cards, newsletters, etc. so we can learn from them. When you get back, let us know what you liked and did not like about your vacation worship experience. Was there something we could try here to be better at prayer and worship and in our welcome of guests? 9 FROM OUR TREASURER For the first three months of the year (January through March) our budget and actual income and expenses stand at: INCOME Actual YTD Budget YTD Pledge 16, , Non-Pledge 1, , Other 13, , Investment 39, , Total 70, , EXPENSES Personnel 34, , Operations 15, , Mission 6, , Other 6, , Total 63, , As you can see, our actual year to date income is higher than our budgeted year to date income. The actual year to date income is higher because and extra $26, was taken from the Wells Fargo Investment to pay bills. Thank you for keeping your pledges up to date it is a great help! Another big help was our Easter egg fundraiser this past year s was the best ever. We made 5,500 eggs and our net income was $5, We cannot stress enough how fundraisers help in supporting the budget. Thank you again, all of you, for your continued support of this great parish through not only monetary giving but also the giving of your valuable time and talent.

Out of the mouths of the Babes I certainly don t think an adult could explain this more beautifully! THIS IS FABULOUS!!! It was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives in Chula Vista, CA. He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment, to explain God. I wonder if any of us could have done as well? (and he had such an assignment, in California, and someone published it, I guess miracles do happen!) EXPLANATION OF GOD: One of God s main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn t make grownups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he doesn t have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers. God s second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn t have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off. God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn t go wasting His time by going over your mom and dad s head asking for something they said you couldn t have. Atheists are people who don t believe in God. I don t think there any in Chula Vista. At least there aren't any who come to our church. Jesus is God s Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn t want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them so they crucified him. But he was good and kind like his father, and he told his father that they didn t know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said O.K. And God did not let Jesus stay in the grave, but raised him from the dead. His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn t have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without have to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important.

EXPLANATION OF GOD (continued) You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time. You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there s anybody you want to make happy, it s God! Don t skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun doesn t come out at the beach until noon anyway. If you don t believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can t go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He s around you when you re scared, in the dark or when you can t swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids. But...you shouldn t just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back anytime he pleases. And...that s why I believe in God.

MONDAY NIGHT ADULT FORUM Again, this fall Saint Paul Episcopal Church, Saint John Lutheran Church, Saint John Herr Estate Retirement Community, will sponsor the Monday Night Adult Forum / Adult Christian Formation Program. It will begin on Monday, October 3, 2016 and continue through Monday, February 27, A schedule will be in the August 2016 issue of Good News. The programs generally begin at 7:00 p.m. and, for the most part, are held in the dining room at Saint John Herr Estate Retirement Community 200 Luther Lane Personal Care Entrance. The pastors have already started to plan a great program of topics and speakers. Mark the dates now on your calendar and plan to join us. PLANNED GIVING Each year the Stewardship Committee conducts an Annual Planned Giving Campaign. In late May, we will mail all members an invitation to become part of the Saint Paul Legacy Society. Members of this society are those who have indicated to us that they have remembered Saint Paul s in their wills and estate planning. Our current Endowment Fund enables this parish to continue its great mission and ministry in Columbia and the surrounding areas. Without the interest from our endowment fund (currently about $40,000 a year), we could not continue with all that we do. Over the years, those who have remembered Saint Paul in their wills and estate planning have planted a tree under which they will not sit but a tree under which future generations will sit. At our Annual Open House and Homecoming Celebration on Sunday, September 18 we will honor and recognize all current and new members of the Saint Paul Legacy Society When you get the information, please read it over, pray about it, and then respond. Your gift of planned giving is a tree that future generations members of Saint Paul will sit under and continue in the mission and ministry that is so important to you, to us, and to them. Please note that those who already are members of the Legacy Society of Saint Paul will not receive a mailing. The Legacy Society Lunch will be held in September. All current and new members of the Society will receive a personal invitation. VESTRY AND DELEGATE ELECTIONS The election for Vestry and Delegates to the Diocesan Convention will take place in the fall at the Annual Parish Meeting. We will be looking for four candidates for the Vestry and one candidate for delegate (plus one alternate) to the Diocesan Convention in The Nominating Committee, chaired by Cle Berntheizel, will begin to identify candidates for these positions this summer. Please consider being a candidate. Full details will be available later in the summer. A nominating form (you can nominate yourself or someone else) will be available on the parish website beginning in July. STEWARDHIP NOTE As you travel during the summer months, please remember that the parish is still here and still has its regular monthly expenses. Please keep your pledge / giving current so that we can manage our budget. Your support is appreciated.

TRAINING ON THE PREVENTION OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE The policy of the Diocese of Central PA is that everyone paid staff or volunteer who works with children under the age of 18 must attend the diocesan program on the prevention of child sexual abuse every three years. In addition, it is recommended that everyone in a leadership position attend this program. Six years ago, the Vestry approved a proposal that all members of the leadership team of Saint Paul both paid staff and volunteers attend this program. This includes staff, vestry members, committee chairs, etc. We will let you know of programs that are being offered in the York / Lancaster area so that you can arrange to attend. New laws of the Commonwealth of PA also required criminal background checks and FBI fingerprinting for those working with young people under the age of 18. Darlene, the Parish Administrator will be contacting those who need to have this done for the first time or need to renew. Please help us in maintaining compliance with Commonwealth law and the requirements of the diocese. The cost of the background check, the check of the sex offender registry, the FBI fingerprinting, and the Safe Church program of the diocese is paid for by the parish. RECEIVING COMMUNION Those who have been part of the Episcopal Church since childhood learned how to receive communion as part of a Sunday School or Confirmation class or from watching their parents. However, many of our newer members are not use to our ritual and they ask, How do I receive communion? What is the right way? First, there is no right way. What are offered here are some suggestions to make you feel more comfortable and to make receiving communion a bit easier. The suggestion about the chalice will also help the Eucharistic Minister. To receive the wafer of bread, merely put the palm of one hand on top of the palm of the other with the fingers curved up slightly. Keeping the palms as flat as possible helps the priest place the wafer of bread in your hands with little possibility of it slipping. You then either raise your palms so the bread enters your mouth or you take your bottom hand, pick up the consecrated bread, and place it in your mouth. Which hand you place on top or use does not matter. It is important to train our younger children in this so that they do not get in the habit of grabbing it from the priest. To drink from the chalice just take the chalice with both hands from the Eucharistic Minister and drink from it. Most of the chalices we use are solid so it is impossible for the Eucharistic Minister to see when the wine reaches your lips. Take the cup part of the chalice with both hands, drink from it, and then hand it back to the Eucharistic Minister. You may also intinct (dip) the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine rather than drink from the cup. If you do this, please ensure that your fingers do not touch the wine. We use very large wafers of bread to help you with this.

CHILDREN IN CHURCH There may be some confusion about children in church. Because we offer a nursery (September through May), some people think that that is where children should be. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, all children belong in church for the entire service that is the ideal. This way, children learn how to behave in church and they see the role model of their parents and others as we pray and worship together as a family. The parish offers a nursery for the first part of the service (Opening hymn through the Confession of Sin) at the 10:15 a.m. Sunday service only for those parents who want to avail themselves of it for whatever reason they choose. Use of the nursery is voluntary and no one should feel pressured to put his or her children there. Our nursery does provide a learning environment (it is not just baby-sitting) so a young person will have activities. The nursery is for children from birth to about 5 years of age (and we can always use volunteers for this ministry). Anyone older should be in church learning how to worship with the community. Now to the question of noise. All children make noise in church it is no big deal. Parents can help by having quiet snacks or quiet books or a quiet toy (we do have coloring books and crayons in a basket in the back of the church please feel free to use them). Unless a child is screaming at the top of their voice or running around the church, the normal child activities are not a problem. If a parent needs to step out to the foyer of the church or the Groome Room (just off the side chapel) because of a child s behavior or noise, please do so. The bottom line is children belong in church learning how to pray and worship with the rest of us. The nursery is there if you want to use it but that is a parent s choice. MEMORIAL GARDEN Now that the weather is nice(er), we will continue with enhancement of the Memorial Garden with additional plantings. Just a reminder that the Memorial Garden is available to all active members of the parish at no cost except for a small fee for the bronze name plate. We have three sacred spaces at Saint Paul. The first is the church where we gather to celebrate and be nourished at the Lord s Table. The second is the Mary Elizabeth Bair Parish Center, where we gather to celebrate and be nourished by the food and fellowship of each other s presence. The Memorial Garden is our third sacred space, where we can gather and be nourished by the life and memory of loved ones. Please consider the Memorial Garden as part of your funeral planning. SEPTEMBER DAILY LOTTERY The Finance Committee has decided that we will have the Daily Lottery Fundraiser again this year. We will begin selling the tickets at various parish events in May and June. Any tickets not sold by July 1 will then be distributed to members to purchase / sell. The drawings will take place during the month of September. The goal is to sell as many of these tickets to the wider community through various events so that the impact on members will be reduced. If we sell all 1,000 tickets, the net proceeds would exceed $4,000.

A FAMILY S REFLECTIONS Our dishes went unwashed today No one made the beds; We took charge of the important needs And went to church instead O sure, we went adventuring The children, Dad and I, And there explored the truths of God That no one can deny. Our house may seem neglected The lawn awaits more care, But in a hundred years or so No one will know or care. But our children learned today, To find God s way to live, We even brought home joy for all, And we learned how to give. It s not so easy just to stop And always put God first, But leaving Him in second place Has got to be the worst. We re glad we took the time for church, For learning from God s Word, We ve found that blest assurance That nowhere else is heard. So we ll be going back next week, But in the days between Our family will be happier Because God s grace we ve seen. Tonight as we climb into beds Unmade from early morn, We know release, great joy and peace Not wearied or forlorn. For God gives to the one s who ll stop And grant Him proper place, The wonders of redeeming love That transforms a home with grace

SUNDAY LECTIONARY READINGS During the time between the Feast of Pentecost (this year May 15) and the First Sunday of Advent (November 27), the Revised Common Lectionary provides two options for the first reading Old Testament. Last year we again used Track I and we will follow it this year. Track I follows the Old Testament readings as outlined in the Revised Common Lectionary and they tend to be longer and more continuous from week to week. This allows the thoughts and ideas of those readings to have time to sink in. Using both Track I and Track II of the Revised Common Lectionary over six years, exposes us to a large part of the Old Testament a basic foundation of our faith. BISHOP S VISIT TO THE LANCASTER CONVOCATION July 8, 9, 10 Bishop Audrey Scanlan will not be visiting Saint Paul this year so there is no Confirmations scheduled for our parish in However, she will be visiting the Lancaster Convocation the weekend of July 8, 9, &10. On Sunday, July 10, she will be making a Pastoral Visitation to Saint Thomas Episcopal Church off of Oregon Pike. If anyone would like to be confirmed / received, please call the parish office ( ). There is a Confirmation / Reception Program that is necessary prior to July 10. Father Patrick will contact you to make arrangements. SUMMER SERVICE SCHEDULE Last year, we implemented a summer weekend service schedule. Beginning the weekend of May 28 / 29, we will implement the summer schedule of services. This summer schedule will run through Labor Day weekend September 3 / 4. The schedule is as follows: Saturday Eucharist: 5:30 p.m. - Saint John Herr Estate Chapel Sunday Eucharist: 9:00 a.m. Church We made this change two years ago, and will continue this summer, because our Sunday summer attendance is lower than during the rest of the year and we are trying to be good stewards of our people, treasure, and time. THE DEAL A young boy had just gotten his driving permit. He asked his father, who was a minister, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, I ll make a deal with you. You bring your grades up, study your bible a little and get your hair cut and we ll talk about it. After about a month the boy came back and again asked his father if they could discuss use of the car. They again went to the father s study where is father said, Son, I ve been real proud of you. You have brought your grades up, you ve studied your bible diligently, but you didn t get your hair cut! The young man waited a moment and replied, You know Dad, I ve been thinking about that. You know, Samson had long hair, Moses had long hair, Noah had long hair, and even Jesus had long hair To which his father replied Yes and they WALKED everywhere they went!

IMPROVEMENT IN OUR EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATIONS In the fall of 2014 and 2015, we introduced a number of changes in how we celebrate our Eucharist which, I hope has had the desired impact. First, we ring the Sanctuary Bell at 5 minutes before the scheduled service time and ask that all conversations and other noise in the church cease. We see this time as a time to prepare to celebrate - to get rid of the distractions that we have brought to the church and to spend some time in private prayer before the Lord. Second, we inserted a time of private prayer after the Let us pray of the Opening Collect. The purpose of this Opening Collect is to collect the prayers of those present and sum them up before the Lord. If there is nothing to collect, then the prayer is not really necessary. This brief period of silent prayer is a time to put our specific hopes and wishes for this Eucharist before the Lord. Third, we inserted a time of silent reflection after the first reading (before the Psalm) and after the second reading. The Lectionary provides a 3-year cycle of readings but they are often out of context, brief, and with Paul especially, sometimes hard to understand even with the best of Lectors. So this is a brief time to think about what we have heard does the reading raise some questions; is there something that I just don t understand; is there something that I want to follow-up on after the service. Remember, you can always takes notes during the readings (and Sermon) if you want. There are pens in the pews and the bulletin makes a perfect scratch pad. There is also a brief period of silent reflection after the sermon. This is for the same reason we have the periods of silent reflection after the first and second reading. It will give us a chance to reflect on the sermon was there something that resonated with me, something I need to follow-up on; something to question; something to challenge. The Offertory is an important part of our Liturgy but in the past we were trying to do too much bring up gifts, take up the collection, listen to the Choir Anthem that we often missed the really important thing preparing the table to offer to the Lord ourselves our souls and bodies. So we made some changes to make the Offertory more of what it should be. We moved the Choir Anthem to after the period of silence following the Sermon and before the Praying of the Creed. Second, the collection is taken up following the announcements and the collection and the bread and wine are brought up together. The table is set during the collection. Once the gifts are brought forth and offered, together with ourselves, we sing the Presentation (Offertory) hymn followed by the Great Prayer of Thanksgiving. Hopefully, this allows us to focus on the Offertory as it is happening. The final adjustment is at the end of the service and is an act of courtesy. Our Director of Sacred Music works very hard to provide for us wonderful leadership in the choir and in the music. However, at the end of the service, there are few people who take the time to listen to the Postlude. So, after the Recessional Hymn, we sit and listen to the Postlude. As the Postlude ends, the Crucifer, Worship Assistants, and Celebrant process out and announce the Dismissal. These few extra minutes of prayer and reflection should be welcome ways to make our Eucharist the prayer it was meant to be. We hope that you have made good use of these quiet times to pray, to reflect, to think, to discern, and to be in God s Holy Presence and experience God s deep love for you.
