Our parish family is a very open hearted and welcoming group and we have worked over the past few years to refine and extend our hospitality in many ways, great and small. As with all things that have to do with church, a large part of successfully pursuing our ministries depends upon how we communicate with those beyond our big red doors. Among the other churches in our community, our compassionate and tenacious commitment to service of the needy and the outcast is well recognized. And for some time now, we have been working diligently to make our Episcopal identity better understood to the larger community. For example, we have designed liturgies to mark major events in our common From the Rector The Rev. Dr. Herbert Sprouse life - think of the 2016 Election Eve prayer service and the Pulse Nightclub memorial service. More and more often, we share our Anglican heritage by throwing our doors open wide for choral evensongs, the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols and other musical events. For more than a year we have hosted the Politics, Facts and Civility community group as they explore means of bridging political differences and conversing with mutual respect. In these and many other activities we strive always not only to be welcoming, but to affirm the dignity of anyone whom we meet. This is in faithful accordance, of course, with our Baptismal Covenant. Over the past few months, your vestry has been considering how further to extend the message of our invitation and welcome. Although both the Episcopal Church and Prince of Peace have formal (Continued on page 2)

Page 2 News and Notes The Episcopal Epistle From the Rector (continued)) (Continued from page 1) statements of welcome for all, here in Gettysburg as in many places, the stranger must first find their way into our midst to learn about that. We would like to make it easier to find us, to hear the universal welcome we proclaim, and to understand how we worship and pray. The vestry has recently adopted a new statement of welcome and inclusion that we will use to guide our enhanced efforts. Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find an invitation to participate in a parish discussion of how we can operationalize this new statement to make ourselves ever more hospitable and affirming. We will explore the nuts and bolts of just how we can go about imitating Christ in our encounters with visitors, newcomers and those whose paths we cross in our day-to-day lives. Please join us for these conversations and in following through on our Baptismal Covenant with greater love and intentionality. As always, I am yours in Christ, Fr. Herb+ Our Call to Proclaim that All are Welcome Your Vestry has been deliberating for some months on how we at Prince of Peace are called to welcome all persons visiting here or seeking a church home in Gettysburg. While we offer words of welcome at the door on Sunday and in our service leaflets, newcomers must first find the church before they can hear our greeting, and they need to know that the greeting is sincere and that their contribution to the richness of our parish life will be welcomed and valued. Now we need your help in deciding how we as a congregation can best convey a message of invitation, acceptance, and affirmation to anyone who has yet to come through our doorway, with the assurance that there is welcome for them here, whatever their age, race, gender, or ethnicity; their sexual orientation, economic condition, physical or mental ability; their status as single, married, or partnered. The Vestry will host two information/ discussion meetings to which all members of the parish are cordially invited. We hope that one of the two dates will be convenient for you to attend: Wednesday, June 20, 7:00 pm, and Sunday, June 24, 12:00 pm. Please join us then with your thoughts, suggestions, and ideas as to how we can truly and sincerely convey our welcome to everyone. We look forward to these conversations, - Your Vestry

The Episcopal Epistle News and Notes Page 3 Habitat Update If you have recently traveled along East Middle Street, you may have noticed that the Blitz Build for the current Habitat project has been completed and a house has been erected at the site. Prince of Peace is currently scheduled to provide three to four workers on Saturday, June 9th, from 8 AM to 12 PM. Please see Pete L.to volunteer to help. Special Music for the Summer The Prince of Peace Choir sang at worship through Trinity Sunday, May 27th. Through the summer months there are opportunities for special music at our worship services throughout the summer months while the choir is on their well-deserved break. Those singers and instrumentalists of the congregation wishing to offer their unique musical gifts with vocal and/or instrumental solos, duets or small ensembles are encouraged to speak with Cathy Elkiss. Thank you! The first of the series of special summer music will be held on Sunday, June 3rd, with the Handbell choir playing three pieces during the service: the prelude, the offertory anthem, and music during communion. Their offering is dedicated in loving memory of former ringers Jane Gough, Jane Jones and Pam Mikesell. Andrew R. graduated on May 5th with a B.A. in History from Cairn University in Langhorne, Pa. He enjoyed traveling to Israel during his freshman year and studying abroad in his junior year, during which time he traveled to 9 different countries. He also founded the university s history club and served as the club president. Wanting to stay active in scouting, Andrew served as Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 19, Langhorne. He was also active in Grace Episcopal Church, Hulmeville, Pa, and organized and researched the cemetery records for their sister church, St. James the Greater Episcopal Church, Bristol, Pa. Andrew will begin work as a seasonal interpreter (May through November) at Fort Miles Museum in Cape Henlopen State Park, Lewes, DE, and is hopeful this will lead into a year-round position. Youth Visitors On Saturday, June 30th, youth and adults from Saint Paul s, Bedford, MA, will spend the night here at Prince of Peace, camping out in the Sunday School room. They are on their way to a mission trip in Appalachia. Watch for more information on what we can do to make their stay a pleasant one!.

Page 4 Handbell Refurbishment On Tuesday, June 5th, a group of our ringers will take our handbells to the Malmark Manufacturing Facility in Plumsteadville, PA for a complete refurbishment. They will be re-voiced, polished, any damaged parts repaired or replaced, and in general, given a complete overhaul. While our ringers are at Malmark, they will also be given a tour of the Malmark factory to witness how these special musical instruments are made. The handbell refurbishment process is recommended for the proper care of the bells every five years or so, and our Prince of Peace bells are between 25 and 30 years old, so it is long overdue! The bells will need to stay at Malmark for approximately six weeks, when they can again be brought home by our group of bell chauffeurs, and ready to being the new program season completely renewed! The refurbishment is being made possibly by a generous gift by an anonymous donor, given to the Glory of God and in loving memory of former ringers Jane Gough, Jane Jones and Pam Mikesell. News and Notes The Episcopal Epistle Episco-Pals The next EPISCO-PALS gathering is scheduled for Sunday, June 24th, at 5:30 PM at the home of hosts Beth and Doug S. The signup sheet is available in Stahle Parlor. The hosts will provide the main course and beverages, everyone else can bring a vegetable side-dish, appetizer or dessert. Episco-Pals is a chance for the adults in the parish to gather and get to know one another in a relaxed setting. The remaining dinner for 2018 is scheduled for Sunday, October 14th, hosts to be determined and announced later. The evenings usually start at 5:30 PM with fellowship, with the meal and dessert beginning at 6:30. The host couple doesn t have to do it all that s why we have co-hosts at the discretion of the hosting couple If you are interested in hosting this final 2018 date, please contact either Olive D. Cornelia S. Annual Parish Picnic Please mark your calendars. The Firemen s Pavilion at the Gettysburg Area Recreation Park has been reserved for our Annual Parish Picnic on Sunday, September 9th. The 10:15 AM service will be held at the park, followed by the picnic. The 8:00 AM service will be held at the church on that date.

The Episcopal Epistle Thoughts of an EfM Graduate Four years ago I took the plunge. I responded to what Carolyn Fouts delightfully called a niggling. Education for Ministry. EfM. Education? It is so much more than that. Ministry? It is absolutely ALL about that. It starts around a table. For those about to embark and for those returning, we become personally engaged early. Worship feeds us and companionship flourishes as we set forth to continue our spiritual journeys together. We are startled to see how closely Old Testament and New Testament are connected. We marvel at the turbulent yet tenacious path the Holy Spirit has forged to preserve Her church against odds of willful human endeavor across centuries. We explore interreligious encounters of growth and transformation of faith along fresh, new paths different from our own. We consider theological issues about who God is and find some surprising answers. We wrestle with who we are and what we stand up for as we seek to serve a confusing world in the name of the Risen Christ. We strive, we search, we listen, we yearn for God s call to each of us. May I end with this: If there is a niggle beckoning to you, please respond with an open mind and a ready heart. Your faith journey may take some enlightening and unexpected turns. Most importantly, you will not be traveling alone. - Chris G. News and Notes EfM Graduation and Informational Event On Sunday, June 17th, at the 10:15 service, we will include a recognition of our three EfM students who have completed the four years of the Education for Ministry studies. We will celebrate the completion of the program by Chris G., Barbara H. and Carolyn F., and will look forward to their gifts of ministry within the parish. Page 5 On Wednesday, July 18th, at 7:00 PM we will hold an informal informational event in Stahle Parlor to discuss Education for Ministry, what it has meant to those of us who have experienced or are experiencing the program, and answer any questions that you may have about EfM. We will have on display the texts that are currently being used. We want to emphasize that, although the full program is a four-year program, participants only commit to one year at a time. The program follows a school year, starting in September and going through late May or early June, a total of 36 sessions. Education for Ministry is a theological education program of the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Since its founding in 1975, this international program has assisted more than 80,000 participants in discovering and nurturing their call to Christian service. Please join us on Wednesday, July 18 at 7PM. There is no pressure or obligation.

The Episcopal Epistle 2018 Gettysburg Brass Band Festival The United States Army Herald Trumpets return to the 2018 Gettysburg Brass Band Festival, along with fourteen bands from five states performing June 7, 8 and 9 in our historic town. In 2017 the 20th anniversary festival featured 362 musicians and attracted an attendance of over 3,000. For the complete schedule, visit the festival web site, This free event is organized by community volunteers in partnership with the United Lutheran Seminary Music, Gettysburg! Concert Series and Destination Gettysburg. The Festival, a creation of our parishioner Ben J., closes with the moving Taps Tribute as buglers bring honor at historic sites. Bring your kids of all ages to the Brass Instrument Petting Zoo and enjoy the Gettysburg Lions Club Community Picnic. Used Bicycle & Sewing Stewardship Machine Drive The Rotary Club of Gettysburg is sponsoring a used bicycle and sewing machine collection for Pedals for Progress & Sewing Peace. P4P collects 3,000 to 5,000 bicycles annually and transfers this material wealth to those more needy. To date, more than 153,000 bicycles and 3,900 sewing machines have been shipped to developing countries in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe. The collection date is Wednesday, June 13, 3:30-6:00 PM at Battlefield BrewWorks, 248 Hunterstown Road. A $10 minimum donation is required for each donation to help offset the cost of shipping. It costs $40 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute News and Notes Page 7 each bicycle. All material and monetary donations are tax deductible and a receipt will be provided at the time of drop off. The third annual Prince of Peace Arts Camp will be held August from 9 am to 3 pm.
