Relationships 4842 Nicollet Avenue South Minneapolis, Minnesota Building and nurturing a faith community through Worshiping, Welcoming, Growing, and Serving. Twelfth Sunday After Pentecost August 27, 2017 In Isaiah the people are bid to look to their spiritual ancestors as the rock from which they were hewn. Jesus declares that the church will be built on the rock of Peter s bold confession of faith. God s word of reconciliation and mercy are keys to the church s mission. Paul urges us to not be conformed to this world, but to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, using our individual gifts to build up the body of Christ. From the table we go forth to offer our spiritual worship through word and deed. Prelude Praeambulum J. Heinrich Scheidemann Welcome Opening Hymn My Life Flows On in Endless Song ELW 763 Verses 1 & 4 Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. (please be seated)...with the world around us...with each other GROWING...with Christ

...in faith WELCOME! God is here for you. If you have a prayer of celebration or concern that you would like included in the prayers, please complete the white card located in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate during the offering. FRIENDS Welcome! Thank you for worshiping at St. John s today. You are welcome to participate in every part of the worship service, including Holy Communion. Today s Worship Mass for Three Voices William Byrd Today s worship service will replace parts of our regular liturgy with William Byrd s Mass for Three Voices, a sacred choral work from the Renaissance originally intended for the catholic mass. Our traditional Lutheran liturgy still utilizes the five main parts of the mass ordinary: Kyrie (Lord/Christ Have Mercy), Gloria (Hymn of Praise), Credo (Apostle s Creed), Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy), Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). Kyrie Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. P: By Grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Gloria (Glory to God) Gloria in excelsis Deo. Et in terra pax hominibus bonæ voluntatis. Laudamus te; benedicimus te; adoramus te; glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Glory be to God in the highest. And in earth peace to men of good will. We praise you; we bless you; we worship you; we glorify you. We give thanks to you for your great glory. If you would like more information about this congregation and its ministry in the world, please ask! You re also welcome to fill out a white Fellowship Card in your pew rack and place it in the offering plate. Domine Deus, Rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite Jesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dextram Patris, O miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. O Lord God, Heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son. Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father. Who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Who takes away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Who sits at the right hand of the Father, have mercy upon us. For you alone are holy, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the most high, Jesus Christ. Together with the Holy Ghost in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

...in faith Children are welcome to come forward for a word from the pastor. Afterwards they are welcome to return to their seats with you or go to the nursery with a Nursery Attendant. Nursery care is offered for children up to age 6. Also, activity bags are available in the narthex (entry). Today s Nursery Attendant is: Lia Gambucci The Nursery is located at the end of the hall to the right of the front of the sanctuary. Prayer of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray: O God, with all your faithful followers of every age, we praise you, the rock of our life. Be our strong foundation and form us into the body of your Son, that we may gladly minister to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. A Word for Children First Reading: Isaiah 51:1-6 Pew Bible p. 594 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 138 (read responsively) I give you thanks, O LORD, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything. On the day I called, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul. All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O LORD, for they have heard the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the ways of the LORD, for great is the glory of the LORD. For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly; but the haughty he perceives from far away. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me. The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. Second Reading: Romans 12:1-8 Pew Bible p. 922 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation (please stand as able)

...in our relationships Gospel Reading: Matthew 16:13-20 Pew Bible p. 798 The Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord. Readings next week: Genesis 25:8-10 Psalm 26:1-8 Romans 12:9-18 Matthew 16:21-28 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Pastor Mark Hymn of the Day Built on a Rock ELW 652 Verses 1 & 3 Credo (Creed) (please be seated) Credo in unum Deum; Patrem omnipotentem, factorem coeli et terrae, visibilium omnium et invisibilium. (Continued next page) I believe in one God; the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, light of light, true God of true God, begotten not made; being of one substance with the Father, by Whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation descended from heaven; and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost, of the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

...in our relationships The Offering is an important part of Christian worship; a moment when we share God s abundance by giving back to God what God has first given to us: our selves, time, talents, and finances. Thank you for all the ways you live by God s grace, sharing from what you have to empower the mission and ministry to which God has called us as St. John s Lutheran Church. Confiteor unum baptisma, in remissionem peccatorum. Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum et vitam venturi sæculi. Amen. He was crucified also for us, suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was buried. And on the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures: and ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; and His kingdom shall have no end. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; as it was told by the Prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And I await the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the Church Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. Sharing of the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Offering Special Music
