4 As you are aware, the installation events for Bishop Daly are by ticket only because of the space limitations here at the Cathedral. Each pastor throughout the diocese was asked to designate four parishioners who would represent parishes by attending the vigil and installation Mass. I recently met with our Parish Pastoral Council and asked for advice as to how to choose our Cathedral representatives. I went into the meeting thinking that they would choose people like the Parish Pastoral Council President, Finance Council President, Altar Society President, Grand Knight, etc. It turns out that I was wrong. The members of the Council decided to honor four people who have given so much of themselves in service of the Cathedral over the years. They ended up recommending Elizabeth Thweatt and Ellen Murdoch to attend the vigil and Pat Harrett and Pat Dunne to attend the Mass. I know that there are many others in our parish who are also worthy of this honor. At the same time, I am edified by the priorities of the Council in choosing these four women. 5 Please join the members of the Knights of Columbus and their families on Sunday, May 10 th at 8:30 a.m. in the Cathedral as we honor our Blessed Mother by praying the Rosary. Vespers during the Easter Season For the remaining Sundays of the Easter season, the Cathedral will hold Solemn Evening Prayer. Solemn Evening Prayer will begin on Sundays at 4:45 pm, will feature members of the Cathedral music program, and it promises to be 20 minutes of time well spent! Upcoming Funeral Ella Mae Pilcher, long-time cathedral parishioner, passed away January 8 th, Ella Mae was 99 years old. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Jason Hiner on Saturday, May 9 th at 10:00 am at the Cathedral. All are invited to a reception in the lower level auditorium immediately following the Mass. Knights of Columbus 2nd Sunday Breakfast On Sunday, May 10 th, breakfast will be served after all morning Masses. Enjoy pancakes, scrambled eggs, biscuits & gravy, sausage, coffee & juice! Ministry to the Sick If you or a loved one is sick, please remember to place their intention on the parish prayer line by contacting Jane Schneider at or jschneider@mariah-group.com. In addition, if someone is facing a pending surgery or serious illness, it is very important to contact the Parish Office so that one of our priests can administer the Anointing of the Sick. A priest can come to your house, to the hospital, or meet you at the Church it is just important to receive this sacrament of the Lord s healing. Are there any who are sick among you? Let them send for the priests of the Church and let the priests pray over them anointing them with oil (James 5:14) The Altar Society's Annual Spring Luncheon will be held at the Tamarack Public House 912 W. Sprague on Tuesday, May 12 th at 1:00 p.m. This is a no-host lunch and all Altar Society members are welcome! Gift for Bishop Daly On May 20 th, Bishop Daly will be installed as the 7 th Bishop of Spokane. On May 31 st, he will celebrate the 11:00 a.m. Mass here at the Cathedral and all are invited to attend. At that Mass we would like to present him with some gifts of welcome. To that end, the Second Collection this weekend will be used to fund the following: A framed portrait of the Cathedral. A generous gift certificate to Anthony s Restaurant (Bishop s middle name is Anthony). A check that he can use for the poor in the spirit of Pope Francis. Unforeseen expenses associated with the installation events. If you are unprepared to make a gift this weekend, envelopes are in the pews which can be taken home and brought back next week. Together with Mary Day On Wednesday, May 13 th, the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the church invite all girls aged 8 to 18 to help make banners for Guatemala. The event runs from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm and you can attend for as long or little as you are able to. This will be held in the lower level of the Cathedral.

6 Stewardship Report for April Stewardship means acknowledging with gratitude the blessings we have received from God by offering a portion of them back to Him. The gifts of time, talent, and treasure we possess are not to be hoarded but to be shared in order to build up the Church and our world. We are blessed at the Cathedral to have so many stewards of time and talent who assist with everything from serving on the altar to giving out sandwiches to the hungry and homeless. April presented a few challenges in that we had some major unforeseen repairs to our Cathedral Campus that were not in the budget. We discovered that the sewer line under the rectory had disintegrated in places and had to be replaced. In addition, the gutters attached to O Connor Hall had rotted away which allowed rain water to literally pour into the apartment above the garage in which Msgr. Pearson lives. The shingle roof and flashing over the sacristy had to be replaced as it too had deteriorated significantly such that it was just a matter of time before water began leaking into the sacristy. Finally, the electrical supply to the chiller was insufficient and had to be re-wired. These maintenance costs amounted to $27,500! We have already paid $17,500 and will pay the remaining $10,000 next month. As you can see, it takes a significant amount of financial resources to maintain our Cathedral Campus and to support the ministry of the Mother Church.
