2 Welcome We are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to do all the good you can, in all the ways you can. Hosanna in the highest! When Jesus and his disciples were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them, Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, Why are you doing this? just say this, The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately. They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, What are you doing, untying the colt? They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest! Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. *Please stand as you are able. But God is in the business of granting forgiveness and filling us with new life. Let us confess to the One who comes to fill us with grace. *THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty God, we confess that we are not so different from those who welcomed Christ into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, yet later shouted 'Crucify him!' or remained silent in the face of injustice. We have betrayed you too, Lord Jesus, by our sins both secret and known. Yet you died for people like us, and you rose on the third day that we might be redeemed. For the sake of Jesus Christ, do not hold our sins against us. Forgive us, Steadfast God, and shine your face upon us. Help us to have the same mind as Christ, so we would know your promises; help us to have the same heart as Christ, so we might serve your children; help us to have the same Spirit as Christ, so we might go wherever you lead us. Open our eyes to the power of love, shown to us in the unselfish sacrifice of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. 9 Sending Forth *THE BLESSING We have gathered with the crowds crying Hosanna! Because even if we were silent the stones themselves would have called out. We have shared the hope for a world about to be changed, and then it changed. We have walked with another crowd. One that called words of scorn and condemnation. And now we follow the crowd as it leads out to the cross, and yet even as the world grows dark, we cannot lose hope. Because God is with us. God will be with us. Whatever happens. We are not alone. As we enter Holy Week, we encourage you to use the following prayer and scripture from week six of the booklet to prepare your heart. Wednesday Night Meal The meal on Wednesday, March 23, is Brixx and Fox s Pizza. Join us for either 1/2 of a chicken sandwich and side salad from Brixx or a personal cheese or pepperoni pizza and apple slices from Fox s Pizza. Meals are $6 each. Advance dinner orders are required. Order your meal online or by calling the church office by Tuesday at noon. Take-out boxes will be available if you have to eat and run, or run and then eat! You and your family, friends, and/or small group are invited and encouraged to eat and spend time together in Hancock Hall. Volunteers are needed to help serve the meal, and volunteers eat free! This service-oriented group meets once a month on the fourth Tuesday of the month in the Hull Conference Room at 5:30 p.m. They serve with Our Daily Bread and many other service projects. 12 10 Later Book Group The Later Book Group meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in room 247. On March 23, we will begin a new discussion using Philip Gulley and James Mulholland s book If Grace Is True. For seekers, for thoughtful Christians, and for the simply curious, Gulley and Mulholland offer a beautiful, timeless message of hope. We will start with the first two chapters. Everyone is welcome to this group where lively discussions are encouraged. For additional information, contact April Webb. April Webb apriloglio@gmail.com Senior Fun Luncheon Senior Fun will meet this Thursday, March 24, at 12:30 p.m. The directors from Talmadge Terrace/Lanier Gardens, Magnolia Estates, Presbyterian Homes, and Iris Place will present an informative program on their various offerings and the costs of their facilities. To reserve a seat, contact the church office by 12:00 p.m. this Wednesday, March 23. In addition, a contest is underway to rename the group to clarify that the age range is "fifties plus." A prize, a free trip to Flat Rock, NC, will be given to the member whose suggestion is chosen for the new name. Members should turn in suggestions on March 24 at the luncheon. Church office Easter Egg Hunt Join Us! All families are invited to celebrate Easter with us at our annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 26, at 4:00 p.m at the home of Stacy Stephens. Easter eggs are greatly needed and appreciated. Please donate one dozen plastic eggs (filled with goodies no nuts or chocolate please) per child attending. Eggs can be dropped off at the church office or in the galleria by Friday, March 25. The youth will lead a sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. at Evergreen Memorial Park. We will also offer three services in our sanctuary at 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00 a.m. Please make plans to join us on Easter morning as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Five Marks of a Methodist Five Marks of a Methodist will meet on Wednesdays starting March 30 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and run until May 4. We will be looking at how a Methodist loves God, rejoices in God, gives thanks, prays constantly, and loves others. We will have a large group time and break into smaller groups for discussion. Tickets can be purchased before and after worship services on March 20 and 27 as well as on Wednesday nights beginning March 16. Cub Scouts will be located outside of Hancock Hall and in front of the preschool wings to sell tickets on these days. If you purchased a semester Wednesday night meal package, you do not need to purchase a ticket for the pancake supperwe are already accounting for you! There will be a limited number of walk-up meals available, so we encourage you to buy your tickets early! The cost is $5 per person with a $20 maximum per family. We hope you will come hungry! Were the people called Methodists once part of the Lutheran Church? Was King James a Lutheran, and did he really translate the King James version of our Bible? 13 Christianity was born again by the efforts of a few inspired heroes risking, and sometimes losing, their lives proclaiming that salvation comes only by faith in God through Jesus Christ. Join us for this informative and entertaining small group study with minimal reading. This group, led by Bob Dean, will meet Mondays, beginning April 4, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. in room 100. This study begins with prayer s core purpose, its biblical design, and its impact throughout history. Readers will be guided through scripture in the fundamentals of how effective prayer works, inspired towards a closer, more intimate relationship with God, and shown how to develop specific prayer strategies for each area of life. It should be your first plan of attack in all of life s battles, not your last resort. If you want to experience the joy of mightily answered prayer, then it s time to engage with God at another level. Projects are family-friendly and will be located here at Athens First United Methodist Church and throughout the community. On April 16, we will gather for light refreshments and Holy Communion at 8:00 a.m. and then head out together to share the love of Christ. Childcare is provided for children age 4 and under. We will gather as a church family for fellowship at our Celebration Brunch and Basket Auction on April 17. Please consider donating baskets for our auction, as an individual or with a group. Mark Burrows, Director of Children s Ministries at FUMC Fort Worth, will lead us in fun, singing, and storytelling each day. Mr. Mark uses found objects and recyclables to turn trash into treasure as he tells exciting stories of Biblical proportions. Registration is open until May 22.
