MISSA IN ANGUSTIIS Franz Joseph Haydn LORD NELSON MASS (1798) ( ) KYRIE The first movement of the Mass communicates an atmosphere of terror and confusion. The text, Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy, is most frequently set as a pious, even submissive plea; but in this Mass it becomes an anguished expostulation, such as one might utter when presented with a disaster of incomprehensible magnitude. I. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. GLORIA The movement that follows, the Gloria, is the exact opposite of the first. It s a song of exultant praise, directed to the same Creator whose world, in the first movement, is so fraught with perils. The world may be beset with dangers and terrors, but is at the same time a glorious world of diverse miracles. II. Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you. We give thanks to you because of your great glory. 3

CREDO Haydn starts the Credo movement with a canon, as the altos and basses repeat exactly the music sung by the sopranos and tenors. The repeating voices in canon are an ingenious way of providing reinforcement for the statement of belief. What follows is the central drama of the New Testament the idea that God took on human form and lives on earth the Christmas story and all that follows it. But because every birth on this earth foretells a death to come, this section also leads through the terrible events of the crucifixion, and the music reflects that agony, as the trumpets and the tympani play echoes of their motifs from the dark Kyrie. In response, in one of the most transcendent moments in the Mass, a trio of soloists assures us that the birth and death were not futile but were in fact for our benefit pro nobis, pro nobis, pro nobis, repeated three times, perhaps to invoke the power of the Trinity. This assurance seems to transform the mood from one of agony and despair to one of acceptance. V. Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem, factorem coeli et terrae, visibilium omnium et invisibilium. Et in unum Dominum, Jesum Christum, Filium Dei unigenitum, et ex Patre natum ante omnia saecula. Deum de Deo, lumen de lumine, Deum verum de Deo vero, genitum, non factum, consubstantialem Patri, per quem omnia facta sunt, qui propter nos homines I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, all that is visible and invisible. And [I believe] in one Lord, Jesus Christ, only begotten Son of God, and born of the Father before all generations. God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in substance with the Father, by whom everything was made, who for us men 4

6 BENEDICTUS In the Benedictus, Haydn chooses to focus on just one part of the text: In the name of the Lord. Together, the soprano soloist and chorus imagine for us the sort of pomp and circumstance that would surround such a messenger. IX. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. X. Osanna in excelsis. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. AGNUS DEI The Agnus Dei movement is a personal address, a prayer, appealing to a personal God through Jesus for a personal blessing miserere nobis. That movement, and the Mass as a whole, ends in an exuberant setting of the last words of the Mass Dona nobis pacem grant us peace. We have been transported from the greatest depths of despair in the first movement to a great and certain joy. XI. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. XII. Dona nobis pacem. Lamb of God, who takes away the world s sins, have mercy on us. 8 MASS NO. 11 IN D MINOR, HOB.XXII:11, MISSA IN ANGUSTIIS ( LORD NELSON MASS ) Franz Joseph Haydn ( ) When Haydn returned to Austria in 1795 after his second highly popular sojourn in London, he resumed his limited duties with the princely Esterházy family. Prince Nikolaus II requested only that his internationally famous Kapellmeister produce a mass each year, to be sung on September 15, the name day of the gentleman s wife, Princess Marie Hermenegild. Under this arrangement Haydn wrote his last six mass settings, between 1796 and The Mass in D Minor was for the name-day celebration in 1798, the same year in which The Creation was completed and premiered in Vienna. It was also the year in which the British fleet commanded by Admiral Nelson dealt the first decisive blow to Napoleon Bonaparte by sinking his ships in the battle of Abukir Bay in Egypt. Popular sentiment quickly attached the name Nelson Mass to Haydn s work, buoyed by the martial music for timpani and a trio of trumpets that abounds in the mass. Haydn scholar H. C. Robbins Landon has shown, however, that the composer did not know of Nelson s success when he was composing this music. According to Landon s dating of events, As Haydn was writing the final pages, news of the great naval victory at Abukir reached Naples, and the town went mad with joy; the fastest couriers rode breakneck northwards, carrying the news to the Papal states, to Florence, Venice, and over the Austrian border. Haydn finished the Dona nobis pacem of his new Mass on August 31 and noted the date on the autograph manuscript: He had begun work on the Mass six weeks previously. As Haydn began rehearsals, the couriers had reached Graz, and on the very day of the first performance, September 15, Count Zinzendorf, a Viennese aristocrat close to court circles, noted [news of the victory] in his diary. Haydn s title for this apprehensive, foreboding work was Missa in angustiis, or Mass in a Time of Anxiety. He was if anything reacting to the fear and uncertainty of the Napoleonic wars (and the work s unusual minor key supports this assumption), rather than to the victory of which he as yet had no knowledge. But the work became firmly associated with Nelson s naval victory in everyone s mind, and the name Lord Nelson Mass persists to this day. The orchestral scoring is interestingly austere: strings with trumpets and timpani, and an important obbligato organ part that was played by the composer himself at the first performance. At a later date the mass was performed with the organ part arranged for woodwind instruments, possibly by J. N. Fuchs, but the original scoring omits woodwinds. Landon considers it the finest of Haydn s twelve masses, and he also speaks of it as in a sense... Haydn s greatest symphony, for in his late masses, Haydn found his last opportunity to sum up the 18th-century symphony in one golden harvest. Nick Jones 2018 Reprinted by permission 8
