Twenty-fourth Sunday After Pentecost November 19, 2017 Today the prophet Amos calls for justice to roll down like waters. Paul urges us to encourage one another with the promised coming of the Lord. Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids. Surrounded by the faithful of every time and place, we celebrate Christ s coming in our midst in the word of life and the feast of victory the marriage feast of the lamb. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. 3 Extending Invitation Our Hymn of Praise heralds us into song proclaiming that right here, right now, This(!) is the feast of victory for our God. Hymn of Praise Then, drawing directly from the description of heaven in the book of Revelation, our voices are joined to that heavenly throng as we sing with them, Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessings! (Revelation 5:12) Not only is this song a powerful proclamation of what God has accomplished in Christ, but also what now Christ is accomplishing in us today. Prayer of the Day O God of justice and love, you illumine our way through life with the words of your Son. Give us the light we need, and awaken us to the needs of others, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen A Word for Children

6 Providing Hospitality The Great Thanksgiving is when we lift our hearts in thanksgiving to a good and generous God. Offering Hymn Verses 1 & 4 All are welcome to commune at St. John s. If your child does not yet commune, you are welcome to bring them forward to receive a blessing from Pastor Mark. Communion will be served from the kneelers at the front of the sanctuary. Ushers will direct you forward for distribution. You will receive the host to eat and then wine (red) or juice (white) from an individual communion cup. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please indicate your need to the server. We are trying a new recipe of bread for communion. The ingredients are: whole wheat flour, white flour, salt, baking powder, oil, water, molasses & honey. Please inform the ushers if you need special assistance, and communion will be brought to you. Offering Prayer Creator of all, the earth is yours, the world and all who live in it. You have entrusted us with gifts time, talent, energy, money and asked us to use them to build your kingdom. With thanks and praise we respond to your call. We bring these gifts you have given, returning your generosity, paying it forward. We offer ourselves, our lives, our hopes and fears, our dollars and our hours. We commit ourselves to work for your world, to love and serve wherever you call. We ask your blessing on this, your church, as we seek to follow you with heart, mind, and soul. JOHN S THANKSGIVING EVE SERVICE on Wednesday, November 22, 7:00 p.m. will focus on giving thanks for the different vocations with which God has blessed our congregation. Instead of forming a cornucopia of foodstuffs, we will be presenting symbols of God s generosity to the people of St. John s made manifest in YOUR many vocations. How does your vocation uplift Christ in our world? Your vocation might not even be your current job! Whatever it is for you, you will be invited during the offering to bring forward a physical item that represents your vocation to add to our cornucopia of vocations. After worship, stay for pie! You may sign up in Fellowship Hall to bring a pie-or just come! THE COMMUNITY MEAL will be served Saturday, November 25. Help is needed in this ministry of hospitality to set up, prepare and serve the meal, and clean up. A sign-up sheet for volunteers is posted outside fellowship hall. You may also contact Tamara Gebhardt at gebhardtfamily@msn.com or with questions and to offer help. THIS ADVENT, we will focus on welcoming the Christ Child, members, and neighbors/guests to St. John s. St. John s youth will be creating ornaments to be displayed in our narthex using photos of St. John s members. If you would like to provide a new 2" x 2" photo, please give it to Tamara Gebhardt or Anne Nervig no later than Sunday, December 3. BRING WARM SOCKS! Missionary Circle members are collecting socks for homeless men of Our Saviour s Housing and encourage St. John s Congregation and Child Care to contribute socks as well. Look for collection baskets in the back of the Sanctuary and in Fellowship Hall. WREATH OF LOVE: Each year St. John s participates in Wreath of Love, an activity of the TRUST congregations. It is designed to acknowledge and remember nursing home residents at Redeemer Residence, as well as children at their child care facility, during the holiday season. St. John s has received gift requests for 6 nursing home residents and 1 child. Each resident receives two gifts, with recommended total spending of $15-$35. Each child receives one gift with recommended spending between $10 and $20. Wrapped and tagged gifts should be returned to St. John s on or before Sunday, December 10. If you are interested in participating, please contact the church office, or speak with Elizabeth Roe directly.
