WELCOMING Celebrating and caring for 4842 Nicollet Avenue South Minneapolis, Minnesota Fueled by Christ s redeeming love, St. John s is called into a joyful life of welcoming hospitality, grace-filled worship, transformational relationships, and Gospel-driven service in the world. A vibrant community living faith boldly through Worshiping, Welcoming, Healing, and Serving Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost September 30, 2018 Prelude I. Adagio from Sonata for Flute and obbligato harpsichord in G minor J.S. Bach BWV 1020 Welcome Opening Hymn O Day Full of Grace ELW 627 Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Kyrie (sung three times) Celebrating and caring for ALL people! ALL people! Confession and Forgiveness Blessed be the Holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. Amen. (continued next page)
WELCOME! God is here for you. If you have a prayer of celebration or concern that you would like included in the prayers, please complete the white card located in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate during the offering. Confession and Forgiveness Let us confess our sin, calling for God s transformational power. Silence for reflection and self-examination Source of all life, we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by worshiping, welcoming, healing and serving; willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. God hears our cry and sends the Spirit to change us and to empower our lives in the world. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. God s love is unconditional, and we are raised up as God s people who will always be made new, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Hymn of Praise FRIENDS Welcome! Thank you for worshiping at St. John s today. You are welcome to participate in every part of the worship service, including Holy Communion. You re also welcome to fill out a white Fellowship Card in your pew rack and place it in the offering plate. Prayer of the Day Generous God, you Son gave his life that we might come to peace with you. Give us a share of your Spirit, and in all we do empower us to bear the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
A Word for Children Children are welcome to worship in their seats with you or go to the nursery with a Nursery Attendant. Nursery care is offered for children up to age 6. Activity bags are available in the narthex (entry). Today s Nursery Attendants are: Dustin Olson Emma Hurbanis The Nursery is located at the end of the hall to the right of the front of the sanctuary. First Reading: Psalm 19:7-14 (read responsively) The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the decrees of the LORD are sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey, and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. But who can detect their errors? Clear me from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from the insolent; do not let them have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. Second Reading: James 5:13-20 Pew Bible p. 983 Holy Wisdom. Holy Word. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation (please stand as able) Readings next Sunday: Psalm 8 Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12 Mark 19:2-16 Gospel Reading: Mark 9:38-50 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the ninth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. (the gospel is read) The Good News, given for you. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Pastor Mark Hymn of the Day Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life ELW 719
Recognition of Baptism: Isaac Andrew Tellijohn Presentation Profession of Faith People of God, do you promise to support Isaac and pray for him in his new life in Christ? We do. I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? I renounce them. So, let us now declare in whom we do believe: Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Thanksgiving at the Font The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live in you. We thank you that by your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, Isaac has been washed in the waters of baptism and has been given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Isaac, You belong to Christ, in whom you have been baptized. Alleluia!
Those in our prayers today: Margaret Thompson Jane McDonald Sara May Reinecke Bruce Walker Margery Arens Norleen Schmidt Diane Shea Ken Marsh Susan Morton Sarah Windelborn Rhonda Stanley Kamona Dixon Gudrun Harstad Dimitri Susan Koliha Jeff Carlson Pauline Sateren Carolyn Pater Amy Arens Susan Stagg The Offering is an important part of Christian worship; a moment when we share God s abundance by giving back to God what God has first given to us: our selves, time, talents, and finances. Thank you for all the ways you live by God s grace, sharing from what you have to empower the mission and ministry to which God has called us as St. John s Lutheran Church. Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Sustain Isaac with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen. Isaac Andrew, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen. Welcome Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Let us welcome our brother, Isaac. We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God s creative and redeeming word to all the world. Amen. Hymn Borning Cry ELW 732 Prayers of the Church Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. When prompted, you are invited to add names of your choosing, either silently or aloud, to our prayers this morning. Sharing of the Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Offering Special Music I. Adagio from Sonata for Viola da Gamba in G Major Offering Hymn...in our relationships J.S. Bach BWV 1027
About communion: All are welcome to commune at St. John s. If your child does not yet commune, you are welcome to bring them forward to receive a blessing from Pastor Mark. Communion will be served from the kneelers at the front of the sanctuary. Greeters will direct you forward for distribution. You will receive the host to eat and then wine (red) or juice (white) from an individual communion cup. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please indicate your need to the server. The ingredients for our communion bread are: whole wheat flour, white flour, salt, baking powder, oil, water, molasses & honey. Offering Prayer Blessed are you, O Lord our God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts. With them we offer ourselves to your service and dedicate our lives to the care and redemption of all that you have made, for the sake of him who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Preparing for the Table People of God, People of Life. We gather as a holy communion, for a meal that has been shared countless times, in countless places, and in countless ways. We eat the bread, and we drink the wine, and we affirm that we all belong at this table and that Jesus is here. So if we come to this table angry, Let this bread and wine be our peace. If we come to the table broken, Let this body and blood be our grace. If we come to the table betrayed, Let this bread and wine be our wholeness. If we come to the table in despair, Let this body and blood be our life. For this is a holy table, with food to fill a hungry world and wine to quench thirsty hearts. Thanks be to God. The Words of Institution The Lord s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Invitation to Communion Come to the banquet, for all is ready for you. Please inform the greeters if you need special assistance, and communion will be brought to you.
