1 THE EAGLE VOLUME XLVI Issue No. 02 FEB., 2016 FEBRUARY The Lenten season has creped up on us early this year. Just a quick note here about how we get to the date when Lent begins for the Christian church. Easter would be celebrated on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon.. Theoretically, the Paschal full moon is the first full moon occurring on or after the spring equinox. However, this day can be reckoned in different ways. One way is by looking at the sky, which yields the astronomical spring equinox. But since this shifts from year to year, most people follow the cylindrical spring equinox, which is reckoned as March 21. To find Ash Wednesday, you start with the date of Easter Sunday, back up six weeks (that gives you the first Sunday of Lent), and then back up four more days: Ash Wednesday is the Wednesday before the first Sunday of Lent. This year that date is February 10, We will be sharing with soup and scripture again this year on Sunday mornings throughout lent, following worship. We will be using a new study by the same author who we studied with last year and the accompanying video. The name of the study is: John, written by Adam Hamilton. The Gospel of John is the most deeply spiritual of the four gospels. This writing is filled with rich images and profound truths, but John notes that his aim in writing the gospel is that readers will not only believe in Jesus Christ, but that they may have life in his name. This Lent we can experience a season of spiritual growth and life-changing renewal in Adam Hamilton s sixweek, DVD-series, John: The Gospel of Light and Life. You ll follow the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus through the Gospel of John and understand the context of some of the best-known verses in the New Testament. Different committees will provide the meal and we will be done in one hour. This has been a really good time to share with people you don t know and reacquaint yourself with old friends. Ash Wednesday - February 10, 2016 at 7p.m. Our annual Ash Wednesday service will be held on Wednesday, February 10th, 2016, at 7 p.m. It is a time for reflection and a time for remembering the sacrifice that Christ faced during the next 40 days. There is music, scripture, a meditation and the chance for a marking of ashes for those desiring them.
