1 THE EAGLE ARCH MAR., 2014 We begin Lent on Ash Wednesday, March 5, In Joel, chapter 2, this scripture calls us to assembly. It is not just on one day and it s not even just this season that we know as Lent, it is all the time. It is a time when we are called into the presence of God. Lent requires us to ponder; to seek after the voice of God, individually, and to live out our lives justly. We think about those who have never heard the story of Jesus love for all people. We are encouraged to think about how to fast and pray without making it some big public witness. It is always a time for reflection and prayer. I hope that is true for you this season. St. John s has had a mid-week (either Tuesday or Wednesday) Lenten series for about thirteen years. During this time we shared in a light meal of soup, sandwiches and dessert. The worship committee was responsible for these services this year and after some discussion, it was suggested to have it after worship. Consistory approved of this recommendation. Many go out to eat after church, so this will be a time to gather to eat a light lunch and share in a series about The Last Supper. Different committees will provide the sandwiches, chips, drink and dessert. This will begin on March 9 and run through April 6 in the social hall. The hope is to spend 45 minutes eating, sharing and learning together. If you are already in worship, we encourage you to stay. We will try this and evaluate it before the Lenten Season next year. Come to worship and stay for lunch and a lesson on the The Last Supper. (The list of committees responsible for the meal will appear under the article for Lenten Services). The winter has been long. Even I agree with that at this point. Worship has ebbed and flowed with attendance. As we enter into March, I hope you will choose to join us for worship. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate. Pastor Paula will be speaking on March 19. WHAT HAPPENS IF IT SNOWS? Will we have to cancel church this winter? If the weather is bad, listen to one of these radio stations to hear if St. John s has cancelled services. YOUTH MEETING MARCH 9TH, :15 p.m. The children and youth will be going to the Lycoming Mall where we will play glow miniature golf. The balls, the holes and the clubs are all glow in the dark. This would be a great family event. Children still in car seats will need to have a parent drive. The cost if we have 10 or more is $7.00 per person. We will leave following the Lenten lunch at 12:15p.m. and anticipate returning by 3:30. If you are a parent or youth and are willing to drive, please notify Linda Williams ( ). Contact the church office with updates regarding the prayer list. 1. Barry Catherman talked to Eric Johnson about the sound system. There will be a meeting of the sound and video operators about what we actually need and how much it will cost. 2. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the proposed worship service cancellation policy presented by Linda Sartwell with the addition of the radio stations that will have the information. 3. The bushes were removed from the parsonage back door with the final cost being about $ The artificial flowers to use when there are no flower donors have been purchased. Dana Haile offered to give us flowers from her wedding for another set. 5. Lewisburg clergy group is looking into a 10 week Lunch Bunch Summer Youth Food Program where church groups would prepare healthy bag lunches and a 30 minute game or craft for 5 areas where there might be children in need. We would plan for 1 week during a 10 week section of the summer. A motion was made, seconded and approved to go ahead with the planning. 6. The Stewardship and Finance committee has been working on all investments and accounts. A motion was made, seconded and approved to move the Building Fund Phase II from investor shares to admiral shares to lower the commission costs. A motion was made, seconded and approved to combine the 2 account numbers for Vanguard Major Building Repair Fund into one account number. 7. A letter has been received stating that the Reitz estate has been over paying us since 2008 due to mismanagement of stock market adjustments. They will be adjusting our payments until it is paid back. This may impact the budget. 8. The Historical & Memorial/Membership committee has sent 2 nd letters to 15 people asking if they want to keep their memberships. The committee has recommended that we not send envelopes to those that have not used them in 2 years as a way to save money. Discussion followed on the merits of sending to people who only have that connection to the church; people that may give but don t want their contributions documented; the actual cost and savings. Deb asked for volunteers to contact the 75 people they listed to not get envelopes in 2015, to see what their wishes are. She will hand out the list to the volunteers. 9. The April meeting of Consistory will be held April 17 th because of Maundy Thursday services on the 3 rd Thursday of the month. 10. A request for building use was received from Rev Kerry Walters asking to hold mass 3 times a month for the American National Catholic Church. A motion was made, seconded and approved to allow them to hold mass, calendar schedule permitting. 11. A special meeting of Consistory was called to order by President Deb Catherman after the service on Feb 2, A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept a recommendation from Worship Committee to hold Lenten Lunches after the service on Sunday mornings rather than Wed evenings for supper. 12. A special meeting of Consistory was called to order after the service on Feb 9, A motion was made, seconded and approved to have Brenda Hoban finish a 1year term for Deacon.
