Saint Luke has already told us how the angels, the shepherds, and the magi have attested to the holiness of this child. Today we hear God call out from the heavens, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. Let us each reflect today on our own baptism, when we were recognized as a child of God. May God be well pleased. This section of Isaiah is referred to as the Book of Consolation, as it begins with the words Comfort, give comfort (Isaiah 40:1) and the promises of justice and light overcoming punishment and darkness. Our baptism should console us as well, knowing that like the Gentile Christians Cornelius and Titus, we too have received the Holy Spirit to guide us in the ways of light and justice. Thanks especially to Saint Paul, the early church expanded quickly to many Gentile areas. Titus had been given charge of the Christian community on the island of Crete. At this time, he was asked to remind the Cretans of their beliefs and duties as Christians. Here and now, in a time and place that Paul never could have imagined, the reminder is the same. The grace of God we have received, the consolation of knowing Christ s redemptive suffering the Holy Spirit we received in baptism all call us to live lives of goodness and holiness, with the hope of eternal life with God. There is a subtle difference between Saint Luke s account of Jesus baptism and the accounts of the other three evangelists. Luke says that after Jesus was baptized by John and before the Holy Spirit descended upon Him like a dove, Jesus took the time to pray. From the beginning of His ministry to His death on the cross, Jesus communicated to His Father through prayer. Jesus taught His disciples to address His Father through prayer. 3 Page 3 January 13, 2019 My Dear Sisters and Brothers, PASTOR S PEN My Pastor s Pen for the next few weeks will focus on the 2019 Annual Pastoral Appeal Theme and this year it continues with Bishop Parkes words Courageously Living the Gospel. Appeal gifts ensure that our Church continues to touch the lives of our sisters and brothers in need, providing the guidance of the Catholic faith and giving witness to Christ s incredible love for all His people, as we truly are living the Gospel through our kindness and generosity. As you know from previous years, January and February are the months we speak about the Annual Pastoral Appeal and I realize some of you may feel the Appeal for money should not be incorporated in the Sunday Liturgies. However, if it were not for the financial support of our parishioners and the parishioners in our surrounding parishes there would be no weekday, weekend Masses or the many ministries that are available for the spiritual and material needs of those in need. I thank you for the kindness and generosity you have always offered to our parish during the Annual Pastoral Appeal. Last year, when I requested your support of the Annual Pastoral Appeal, you responded with a gift that has provided care for retired Clergy, prepared Seminarians for priesthood and Deacons to assist our Pastors, formed our young people in the Catholic faith, given Tuition Assistance to Catholic School children with limited means and offered Catholic Charities social services to those facing Alzheimer s Disease, unplanned pregnancies, and family conflict. You are invited to join our Circle of Prayer every Wednesday at 12:00 Noon in Classroom B. Our purpose is to gather as the Angelus calls us to prayer. We meet as a group to pray with an open heart. After that we will enjoy a special meal prepared by fellow member Tom Kellner. The evening winds up with a short business meeting. NAVIGATORS MEMBERSHIP DRIVE IS UNDERWAY Men of our parish we are always looking for new members and our January/February recruitment campaign is underway. The Navigators are a group of men from our parish whose goal is to assist the Pastor in furthering the mission of the Community of St. Brendan. We do this by promoting the spiritual welfare of our members, performing works of charity in the community, supporting parish social and cultural activities and assisting with projects of pastoral interest.
