1 St. Brendan Catholic Church Saint Brendan Mission Statement We come together as the Church of St. Brendan to hear the story that God loves us with a love that surpasses all understanding; to break the bread of the Eucharist, so that we might be broken as Bread in service to others; that through our belief in Jesus we may joyfully go forth knowing that our lives have purpose and that we will live forever. We didn t realize it because it was also the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Through baptism, we each became members of the Body of Christ, the Church. It may seem quite ordinary, but it certainly is not, as our baptism was the occasion of our rebirth in the Spirit. As we celebrate Ordinary Time today, may we realize the extraordinariness of God s grace. This Gospel passage ends with John s observation that the disciples began to believe in Him (John 2:11). But one person in this scene believed in Him already---his mother. Realizing that the wine ran short, she told her Son. Despite His rebuke, she alerted the servers. This event is not only a sign of the power Jesus had, but also of the behavior of the human family. Ideally, a mother believes in her children and their ability to do more than they may appear willing or able to do. A child obeys as best she or he is able. The Holy Family provides a model for us. Last week we heard Luke s account of the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus at His baptism. Today we hear Saint Paul telling the Corinthians that the Holy Spirit was behind all these new phenomena of the early Church. God is behind all the newness described in today s readings: the new names given Jerusalem, the new wine at Cana, the new spiritual gifts in Corinth. No same old, same old;, God makes all things new. Tomorrow we celebrate Martin Luther King Day. During Dr. King s life, many people felt uncomfortable or even angry about what he preached. Perhaps some in Corinth felt the same way. The movement of the Holy Spirit can challenge people who are set in their ways, thinking they have all the answers. The movement of the Holy Spirit can upset people who feel threatened by radical transformation. But isn t the gift of salvation a radical transformation of humanity? God exalts the forsaken, marries humanity, and fills our lives to the brim with good wine. The Spirit flows within us. QUESTION OF THE WEEK: How am I challenged to live my life differently? Can I recognize the Spirit when I am challenged to change? (Permission granted-world Library Publications 2018) Respect Life Committee Tuesday, January 22 nd at Forty-six years ago, the United States Supreme Court made the decision to legalize abortion for all 9 months of pregnancy. Please join us at the 8:30 am Mass this Tuesday, January 22nd to pray with us for the end of abortion. Every year there are hundreds of thousands of legal abortions performed in our country. We will be praying for the babies who are lost, for all pregnant women and for all who have been touched by the heartache of abortion. Following Mass, a Rosary for Life will be also be prayed and we are hoping that you will join us in our petitions to change the hearts and minds of the pro-choice culture. If you would like to join the Respect Life Committee please contact Debbie or Don Noble at or debbnoble@aol.com.
3 Page 3 January 20, 2019 My Dear Sisters and Brothers, PASTOR S PEN Every parishioner can fully participate in the mission of COURAGEOUSLY LIVING THE GOSPEL by participating in the 2019 Annual Pastoral Appeal BE COURAGEOUS. Please prayerfully consider the blessings you have been given, and the prayers answered in your times of need. Every year, each parish and mission in the Diocese is given an assessment and our assessment for 2019 is $84, I believe in the faith community of St. Brendan that we will be able to once again meet and surpass our assessment. You should have received a packet from Bishop Parkes this week which includes a personalized letter from Bishop Parkes, a brochure, personalized intent/gift card and return envelope. If you did not receive your packet it may arrive the beginning of this week. Next Weekend is APA Prayer Weekend and the prayer card will be in the bulletin as well as in the pews and we will say this prayer at each Mass through February 23/24 which is APA Follow-up Weekend. Please remember your pledge can be a one-time payment, or monthly or quarterly installments and that no gift is too small.
