INTERCESSIONS Blessed be you Almighty Father, for your guiding power that has brought us here to serve you in this Church. Unite us all in love and forbearance as we serve one another. We pray for the mission and unity of the Church throughout the World, remembering today the Anglican Church of Canada. In our diocese we pray for Sally Gazebeing licenced today as Archdeacon for Rural Ministry: and Rhiannon King (Archdeacon of Ipswich designate). For Ian Morgan (Archdeacon of Suffolk) and David Jenkins (Archdeacon of Sudbury) In our life at the Tower we pray for the Inspiring Ipswich project: that we can play our part working with others in the Ipswich Deanery. We pray for Richard Hanley and Cathy Moss who today are re-commissioned as Elders and others who are considering Lay Ministry. For our preparations for the Season of Lent. We pray for those working to move forward the Tower House Project. That the applications for consent of alterations and improvements will be successful. We pray for those who live and work in our Town Centre. For Local Councillors and Service providers. For Social Service and Charity workers, providing support for the vulnerable. For those living with physical and mental health problems and various forms of addiction. For the homeless and the lonely. We pray for peace in the World: for those living amidst conflict and an uncertain future. For our own nation. For Government Ministers and members of Parliament. That all can come to realistic decisions about the Brexit process. We pray for those we know who are sick or otherwise distressed including: Phyl Fisk, Mary Trythall, Jean Goodson, Cullum Doe and Jaydon McConnachie. We continue to pray for, Adrian Parry, Barbara Bellamy, Angela Pantelis, Bob and Alexander Tostevin. We pray for those now unable to be regularly with us in Church, including this week: Margrid Brooks and Mary Gurney. Be with them and those who care for them. We pray rest in peace and rise in glory for those who have recently died, and we pray for all who mourn. We give thanks for the lives of those whose remembrance falls at this time of year, among them Eric & Dorothy Hansford, Charles Parnell and Richard Metters. Names and Topics for the prayer lists should be given to the Administration Office. PRAYER FOR THE DAY (The Collect) O God, you know us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright: grant to us such strength and protection as may support us in all dangers and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen 3

BIBLE NOTES St Paul begins the fifteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians with what was probably a very early creed in one part of the early Church. It concentrates on the centrality of the resurrection of Christ as a core belief for Christians and cites the evidence provided by those who had encountered the risen Christ including himself even if late in the day. In the gospel reading we have Luke s account of the miraculous draft of fishes and the disciples response to it. It is typical of the way in which the gospel writers often use the miracles as acted parables. A parable is a story which is told to make a point rather like a music hall joke ending with a punchline. In this case it is Jesus statement From now on you will be catching people which is the signal for the fishermen to embark on their leaving their former life and begin their new life as Jesus disciples. Canon Roger FIRST READING 1 Corinthians I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace towards me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. GOSPEL Luke While Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch. Simon answered, Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets. When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were 4

beginning to break. So they signalled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus knees, saying, Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man! For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people. When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed Jesus. ANTHEMS SUNG BY THE CHOIR TODAY 9.30AM, Gibbons: Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities, and in all our dangers and necessities stretch forth thy right hand to help and defend us, through Christ our Lord. Amen. 5.00PM, Farrant: Call to remembrance, O Lord, Thy tender mercies and Thy loving kindness, which hath been ever of old, O remember not the sins and offences of my youth: but according to Thy mercy think Thou on me, O Lord, for Thy goodness. DEANERY NEWS: INSPIRING IPSWICH Inspiring Ipswich is an exciting deanery project for a revitalised church in Ipswich which reaches out to those who are currently not part of the Church and is in line with our diocesan Growing in God vision of flourishing congregations making a difference. Much of it will be funded by a grant from our strategic funding bid. Part of this includes a new Archdeacon for Ipswich, Rhiannon King, and new Archdeacon for Rural Mission, Sally Gaze. Ipswich Learning Community. As part of Inspiring Ipswich, every parish is being asked to form a small Learning Community a great opportunity to meet with other parishes over two years to explore vision and strategy to grow our churches. Would you like to be part of this? There is an opportunity to find out more at Deanery Synod on 5 th February, 7.30pm at All Saints, Chevalier St and/or at a Foundation Day on Saturday 6 th April, at the St Nicholas Centre. If you are interested, please talk to Jeanette or Katrina. Strategic Development Funding Great news! The Diocese is delighted to have secured 4.95m from the national Church which will span 6 years and be directly invested in two projects Inspiring Ipswich and Growing in God in the Countryside. Inspiring Ipswich will generate a greater Christian presence throughout the town by actively reaching out to the Ipswich population through church-led community engagement. The project will provide all Ipswich parish churches with training and the opportunity to learn together to be more effective in supporting the needs of their communities. See the diocesan website for a fuller account - 5

HELP! YOUR CHURCH NEEDS YOU! I am about to prepare the Flower Rota for 2019/20. Three of our lovely flower ladies are unable to continue, so we would love to have a few more volunteers. It would only involve doing the flowers about three times a year and if you would like to pair up with someone that is fine. The more people we have the fewer times we have to do it. You don't have to be good at arranging flowers - it is your offering to the life of the church. If you feel inspired to be on the rota please contact me. Sue Adair Tel: or suemadair@gmail.com ENEWS Diocesan enews is a useful way of knowing what s going on in our diocese and churches. It s a weekly which includes weekly updates and information about diocesan and local church events, training opportunities and vacancies. Visit the diocesan website to sign up for free. CHOIR STALL LIGHTING SCHEME On behalf of the Music Department, a heartfelt thank you to all who have generously donated towards the cost of the new lights. We have surpassed our total of 1.6k to have the lights built and installed. As we have crossed that financial threshold so quickly, I would like to introduce the proposed second phase of adapting the chancel to a larger choir. Phase 1 ( 1, covered) New lighting in the chancel for the choir, positioned discretely on the organ and Lady Chapel screens. After installation and when functioning as expected, the lanterns are to be removed from the stalls. Phase 2 (further funding required c ). In order to use the choir desk space efficiently, it is proposed that the current ring-binder folders are retired and replaced by complete Psalters (compiled by William Baldry, and specific to St Mary-le-Tower) and a separate anthology of Preces & Responses. These are to be printed on thick paper and spiral bound to ensure durability. When introduced, the new Psalter and Responses anthology would significantly reduce the workload of the librarians. This is a hugely exciting time for the choir, which now numbers over 60 members; 40 of whom are choristers and choral scholars. We are all very grateful for the continuing support we get from the congregation. For any further information on this initiative, please do not hesitate to contact me. Christopher Borrett Director of Music ELECTORAL ROLL RENEWAL (ER) Letters with ER application forms enclosed will be available for collection at the back of church, (or in Church House for choir members and their families) from 18 th February. It is a completely new roll this year - names will not be carried forward so everyone who wants to be on the new roll must complete and return their form by Monday 11 th March. If you have any questions, or have not received a letter, please contact Carolyn Heyburn cjhnow@tiscali.co.uk or the Parish Office (details on front page). Completed forms can be posted into the secure letterbox at Tower House, 17 Tower Street, or scans of the signed form ed to stmaryletower@hotmail.com. 6

AN OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT CHINA: The Diocese is looking to develop links with Christians in China over the next couple of years. Last summer we were visited by Peter Yuan, from Szechuan Theological Seminary in Chengdu. This year 3 people from our diocese hope to go to China as part of the Amity Summer English Programme (SEP) and we wonder if others would be interested in joining them. The Foundation is an independent Chinese Civil Society Organization supporting sustainable development in China and worldwide. The SEP invites English speakers to volunteer in training Chinese teachers of English in less developed parts of China. The SEP is a wonderful opportunity to spend a month in China, helping primary and secondary school Chinese teachers, to develop their English language skills. If you think this is something that might interest you, you can find more details at Our World Development Adviser, Richard Stainer may also be able to help and can be contacted at richard.stainer14@gmail.com This is a wonderful opportunity to spend a month getting to know a very different culture and to make new friends. The deadline for applications is the 1 st March. COLLATION OF NEW ARCHDEACON OF IPSWICH. Rhiannon King will be collated by Bishop Martin at Chantry School on Monday March 25 th at 7pm. Places are limited, so if you would like to go, please let Donna know as soon as possible. (See front page for contact details). ANNUAL REPORT SUBMISSIONS Preparations are beginning for the APCM (Annual Parochial Church Meeting) being held on Tuesday 30 th April at 7.30pm. As part of this, we are calling for submissions to be sent to the Parish Office for collation. The report will largely cover the same categories as in previous years and invitations to contribute will be sent during the next week. Many thanks to everyone for your continuing support of St Mary-le-Tower. BISHOPS' TEACHING MORNING: A journey through Holy Week Saturday 9 March, 9.00am 12.30pm Stowmarket Salvation Army Hall, 3 Violet Hill Road IP14 1NE A morning with Bishop s Martin and Mike to consider what we think is going on in terms of the work of Jesus Christ through Holy Week, how we participate in this journey and what resources are helpful liturgically and personally. We thank God for their ministries and willingness to serve, and pray for them. NO WEEKDAY EVENING SERVICES There will be no regular weekday evening choral services until after Easter, due to the Vicar s Study Leave. There will however be a Choral Eucharist at 6.30pm on Ash Wednesday (6 th March). TOWER CONTACTS ADMINISTRATOR (Church and Tower House): Donna Joyce. Parish Office contact details on front page.
