1 The Church of the Covenant Sunday, November 4, 2018 All Saints Sunday Service of Worship for the Lord s Day The Cragin Peal WELCOME Convinced of God's grace, the Church of the Covenant seeks to be a welcoming spiritual home, live God's inclusive love, express Christ's compassion, and do justice in the world. GATHER We gather to worship God George Leggiero, Carillonneur on the Lord s Day (Sunday) Organ Prelude Jonathan Moyer, Organist because the Gospels testify Passacaglia, BuxWV 161 Dietrich Buxtehude that Jesus rose from the dead early on the first day of Welcome Amy Starr Redwine, Pastor the week. The Lord s Day is also called the eighth day * Celebration of Community of creation, a sign of the new Introit Chancel Choir creation that has begun with Let Us Break Bread Together arr. Jimmie Abbington Christ s resurrection. Let us break bread together on our knees. When I fall on my knees, with * Please stand as you my face to the rising sun, O Lord have mercy on me. are able. * Call to Worship The McGaffin Carillon One: We remember, O God All: the countless saints of history who have blazed a trail of courage through time, We remember, O God the tender touch of loved ones and the healing words of comforters. We remember, O God the loyalty of friends, the kindness of strangers, the joy of children, the sacrifice of parents. We remember, O God the love of Jesus, the blessing of his Spirit, the reminder of his words, the pain of his death, the glory of his resurrection: shown forth in the lives of his disciples, young and old, dead and living, articulate and silent, strange and familiar, brilliant and ordinary. We remember in every time and place the saints of God who have shown us the Lord. Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us worship God with joy! LAY WORSHIP LEADER Chris Langmack is a lifelong Covenant member and during those many years he has chaired all the boards and served on most committees. Chris has been married for fifty-one years to his wife, Marilyn. They have two married daughters and four grandchildren, three girls and a boy. He is still working but his life revolves around his family and friends. He counts his blessings every day! CONFESSION * Hymn 526 SINE NOMINE Having praised the holiness For All the Saints of God, we must also face the sinful state of the world Vs. 1 & 4, All voices; Vs. 2, Upper voices; Vs. 3, Lower voices and of our lives, trusting in * Call to Confession Chris Langmack, Lay Worship Leader the mercy of Jesus Christ.
2 * Corporate Prayer of Confession Gracious and loving God, we confess the difficulties we experience in living as you lived and loving as you loved. We confess how easy it is to concentrate on our own pleasures taking note of the plight of many in the world only as the news momentarily grabs our attention. We confess our capacity to be so consumed by our own agendas that our concern for the needs of others shrinks all too rapidly. We confess our failure to act when we see around us weakness, pain and suffering. We confess our reluctance to love our enemies and to do good to those who dislike or even hate us. Strengthen us to be people who sing and live your song of love; who willingly serve our neighbors; who seek justice and mercy for all, and who truly repent of what is past and look with anticipation for what is yet to come. And finally, remind us to live honestly and to act courageously. * Silent Confession of Sin * Declaration of Forgiveness One: Friends, hear the good news! If we confess our sin, God is faithful and just, forgiving and transforming our lives. Friends, believe the good news: All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! * Gloria Patri Hymn 579 Glory be to the Father** and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. **or Maker Prayer for Illumination First Lesson John 21:1-8 Time for Young Disciples Kevin Lowry, Dir. of Student/Family Ministries Second Lesson John 21:9-19 One: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Sermon Saints at the Table Litany of Necrology Amy Starr Redwine, Pastor One: Holy God, you have chosen us to serve you and appointed us the agents of your love. We thank you for prophets who recall us to your will. We are grateful for every impulse to confess and correct wrongs, to keep faith pure, and purposes faithful. We praise you for your Spirit always reforming the church, so we may better serve as disciples of your Son. All: Great God, you hear our prayers before we speak, and answer before we know our need. We pray, therefore, for all of creation. May all the earth praise your name. We remember before you all the saints who have given themselves through the ages. May we be bold enough to pick up the mantle they have passed. MUSIC NOTES Max Reger ( ) was an organist and pianist, and composer of art song, fugues, choral music, and other types of orchestral works. His fiendishly contorted "O Tod, wie bitter bist du" is for five voices; two sopranos, alto, tenor, and bass, and each line often moves independently. Reger begins by simply outlining a quiet, hollow sounding, E- minor chord, which he embellishes with sobbing figures in the first and second soprano lines. Reger constantly returns to the text "O death, how bitter are you?" but in the end, the surging lines seem to want to turn to acceptance that death is the next and only frontier, for one who is old, and hopeless. This shift is marked through the hopeful key of E-major in a choralelike setting of the text O Death how soothing you are. This work can also be heard on the CONSOLATION collaboration concert on Friday, November 9 at 8:00 pm. ENCOUNTER We receive the good news of God s love, mercy, and justice revealed to us through the Bible. The Word is proclaimed in scripture, sermon, and, on some Sundays, through the Sacraments of Baptism and the Lord s Supper.
3 Let our generation see your vision, O God. We pray for those held close by this church, who have entered the church eternal. As these saints gather around your throne, hear their prayers, O God, as they continue their care for us. Dolores Acree, Jane Adams, Michael Anthony, Andrew Bullen, Martha Cooper, Vivian L. Eanes-Dickson, Lise Genson, Phyllis Hackett, Anne Marie Haiss, Chick Holtkamp, Doug Horstman, Betty Jarmusch, Leone Kelly, Les Knowlton, Phyllis Koons, Alma Lange, Donald Lowry, Bob MacNaughton, Elizabeth Mierke, Joseph Orcutt, Earl Peters, Velda Roe Cooper, Sue Salvator, Elaine Sharp, Tami Smith, Eugene Sewell, Carolyn Teare-Richardson, Eugene Thomas, Elizabeth Wolf, Louise Wolfcale, and those others known to us whom we name before you in the silence of our hearts The tolling of the great bell. * Hymn 537 SHALOM CHAVERIM Shalom, Chaverim! Farewell, Good Friends Invitation to the Offering Offertory Jonathan Moyer, Piano Oseh Shalom bimromav Hebrew Melody The one who makes peace in high places, may peace be made for us, and for all Israel. Let us say, Amen. Sacrament of the Lord s Supper Invitation The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Lift up your hearts, We lift them up to God. Let us give thanks to God. It is right to give both thanks and praise. Kevin Lowry The Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. During the reading of the names, the tolling of the bell, and the response, all are invited to come forward and, in memory of the saints in your lives, place a stone or flower on the table in All Saints Chapel. The tintinnabulum is used today in our All Saints Sunday worship. In the Middle Ages the tintinnabulum alerted the people of Rome to the fact that the Pope was approaching. Today Reformed congregations use it to honor all faithful Christians who have died and now rest from their labors; it represents the priesthood of all believers and brings to mind the cycle of God's redeeming work represented in observance of the church year. It is built on a Tau cross. The colored ribbons represent the church year and the black ribbons represent those who have died since last All Saints Day. The bells on some of the ribbons are an audible symbol of presence, and they create a subtle sound of joy about God's grace in the lives of God's saints living and deceased. RESPOND Having heard God s word proclaimed, we respond with music, prayers, and sacraments (including, today, the Lord s Supper), and by offering to God a portion of the financial resources we have received.
4 Congregational Amen McNeil Robinson All are invited to sing. Scan the QR code below to access online giving, where you can make a one-time gift or set up a recurring donation. Thank you for your generous response to God s gracious love! The Words of Institution Distribution of the Bread Distribution of the Cup Music during Communion O Tod, wie bitter bist due Chancel Choir Max Reger O Tod, wie bitter bist du, wenn an dich gedenket ein Mensch, der gute Tage und genug hat und ohne Sorgen lebet; und dem es wohl geht in allem Dingen und wohl noch essen mag! O death, how bitter you are when one thinks about you, one who has good days and sufficient goods and lives without worries, one who is prosperous in all things and also able to eat well. O Tod, wie wohl tust du dem Dürftigen, der da schwach und alt ist, der in allen Sorgen steckt, und nichts Besseres zu hoffen noch zu erwarten hat! O death, how soothing you are to one in need, one who is weak and old, who is stuck in constant worries, and has nothing better to hope for nor to wait for. The Prayer after Communion * Hymn 505 ST. FLAVIAN Be Known to Us in Breaking Bread * Charge and Benediction Organ Postlude Toccata Jonathan Moyer Eugène Gigout Carillon Postlude George Leggiero Grote Klokken, Kleine Klokken (Big Bells, Little Bells) Arthur Lynds Bigelow The Presbyterian Church (USA) observes open communion. All who confess their faith in Jesus Christ as Sovereign and Savior, as well as their children, are invited to partake. Today we celebrate the Lord's Supper by passing. Please partake of the bread whenever it is appropriate for you. Gluten-free bread is available in the paper cups on each plate. Please hold the cup so that we may partake together, as a sign of our unity in Christ. To symbolize our calling to minister to one another, as you pass the tray of cups to the person seated beside you, please say, May the Spirit of God be with you. As you are served, please respond, And with you also. The wine of communion is unfermented grape juice. SEND Having been nurtured and nourished through worship, we are sent from this place to glorify God in the service of our daily lives. Please be mindful of those who wish to stay and listen to the postlude. A Stephen Minister will be in Christ Chapel after worship to talk or pray.
