Saturdays from 4-4:45 p.m. in the Basilica. Marriage: Couples must arrange their wedding ceremony at least 6 months beforehand. Every couple must attend a Pre-Cana meeting. Ask the priest before Mass in the sacristy. Communion to the Homebound: Our Eucharistic Ministers are happy to bring Holy Communion to the homebound. To arrange this, please call the Rectory. Baptism: Parents wishing to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism with their children must attend a "Registration and Instruction Session" on the First Saturday of any month at 11 am in the Basilica Conference Center. At these sessions it will be necessary for both parents to attend, and to bring a copy of the baby's birth certificate. Necessary registration forms will be completed, the required instruction will take place, and the Baptism will be scheduled. Remember, both Godparents must be Catholic, 16 years old, and must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Godparents may attend these sessions but are not required to do so. Baptisms are celebrated in English on the third Saturday of each month at noon in the Basilica. Once this session is completed, you may schedule the ceremony for any month. Baptisms are celebrated in Spanish on the second Saturday of each month at noon in the Basilica. Spanish Registration and Instructions on the first Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Basilica Conference Center. It is no longer necessary to come to the Rectory Office to set up a Baptism celebration. You may call the rectory for Chinese or Italian Baptisms. Thou shall dress with dignity for church: No one would wear shorts and t shirts to meet the Queen or the President. How much more should we dress up to meet the Lord? II. Thou shall not arrive late or leave early: Coming late is disruptive and leaving early is disrespectful. Some theaters have strict timeline for when people can come and leave. Must we make one for church? III. Thou shall fast from food and drink: In the old me, the fast was from the night before. Now, it s only an hour before Mass. Still, we find all kinds of food and drink in church. Only the infirmed and infants are exempt from this fast. IV. Thou shall not chew gum in church: Nothing is more distracting and disrespectful than the chewing of gum in church. There must be a special place in purgatory for those who stick gum under the pews. V. Thou shall cross thyself and genuflect: Crossing ourselves with holy water upon entering and leaving the church is a reminder of our baptism. Genuflecting to the tabernacle acknowledges our belief in Jesus Real Presence. VI. Thou shall silence electronic devices in church: This includes cell phones and anything that rings, beeps or buzzes. Using cell phones to follow the readings is good, but to make or receive phone calls is not. Don t text and pray either. VII. Thou shall not bring toys or balloons to church: It is God s house and a place of worship, not a dance hall or children s playground. VIII. Thou shall not be an indifferent spectator: Active participation is required. Pick up the missalette and follow along. Also, when done, kindly put the books back where they belong. IX. Thou shall not chitchat before, during, or after Mass: The church is a holy place and the Mass is a sacred act, not a social gathering. Other people come to church to worship and pray, not to hear your conversations. X. Thou shall supervise thy children: Nothing is more adorable than little children in church, but nothing is more disturbing when they run amok. Good manners are taught early on.

5 PAGE FIVE JANUARY 20, 2019 MORE FINANCIAL BAD NEWS This past week we received a report from the Diocese on the status of our Diocesan Fund Raising campaigns. The ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL for 2018 ended in December. Our goal for this campaign was $52,698. Unfortunately, we did not reach our goal and were approximately $2500 short. We were asked to send in a check for the $2500 to the Diocese to make up the difference. So...instead of getting money back from this campaign, we LOST money because not everyone who pledged had paid their pledge. The GENERATIONS OF FAITH CAMPAIGN which is the 5-year pledge campaign is still going on. Our goal is $470,000. Pledges amounting to $734,330 were made by 289 people. If they are all paid, we will get back $264,330 for the parish. However, up until now only $277,411 has been paid. IF you are behind in your payments, please try to catch up or even finish paying. The parish counts on your generosity for our operations. Please help. The Holy Father speaks Each one of us should think: In my life, how many times have I felt the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to do a work of charity, to encounter Jesus in that work of charity, to go to pray, to change your life in this area, in this area that is not going well? And I have always found a reason to excuse myself, to refuse. Jesus is so good, in the end He forgives everything : Yes, He is good, He is merciful He is merciful, but He is also just. And if you close the door of your heart from within, He cannot open it, because He is very respectful of our heart. Refusing Jesus is closing the door from within, and He cannot enter. On Sunday, February 3, 2019 our Parish will celebrate the Chinese New Year. It is a way of appreciating and sharing the beauty of different cultures. The event will start with the 12 noon multi-language Mass in the Basilica of Regina Pacis. The Holy Mass will end with the veneration of the ancestors according to the Chinese Catholic tradition. It is an opportunity to pray for the souls of all the departed, including those who are not Chinese. The celebration will continue in the Pre-K Gym with an entertainment program and refreshments. 7 PAGE SEVEN JANUARY 20, 2019 What Ordinary Time Means in the Catholic Church Because the term ordinary in English most often means something that's not special or distinctive, many people think that Ordinary Time refers to parts of the calendar of the Catholic Church that are unimportant. Yet Ordinary Time is far from unimportant or uninteresting. Why Is Ordinary Time Called Ordinary? Ordinary Time is called "ordinary" not because it is common but simply because the weeks of Ordinary Time are numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English word order. Thus, the numbered weeks of Ordinary Time, in fact, represent the ordered life of the Church the period in which we live our lives neither in feasting (as in the Christmas and Easter seasons) or in more severe penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the Second Coming of Christ. Thus for Catholics, Ordinary Time is the part of the year in which Christ, the Lamb of God, walks among us and transforms our lives. There's nothing "ordinary" about that! When Is Ordinary Time? Ordinary Time refers to all of those parts of the Catholic Church's liturgical year that aren't included in the major seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. The Church year begins with Advent, followed immediately by the Christmas season. Ordinary Time begins on the Monday after the first Sunday after January 6, the traditional date of the Feast of the Epiphany and the end of the liturgical season of Christmas. This first period of Ordinary Time runs until Ash Wednesday when the liturgical season of Lent begins. Both Lent and the Easter season fall outside of Ordinary Time, which resumes again on the Monday after Pentecost Sunday, the end of the Easter season. This second period of Ordinary Time runs until the First Sunday of Advent when the liturgical year begins again. Why Is There No First Sunday in Ordinary Time? In most years, the Sunday after January 6 is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. As feasts of our Lord, both the Baptism of the Lord and Epiphany displace a Sunday in Ordinary Time. Thus the first Sunday in the period of Ordinary Time is the Sunday that falls after the first week of Ordinary Time, which makes it the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. How Many Sundays Are There in Ordinary Time? In any given year, there are either 33 or 34 Sundays in Ordinary Time. Because Easter is a moveable feast, and thus the Lent and Easter seasons "float" from year to year, the number of Sundays in each period of Ordinary Time vary from the other period as well as from year to year.
