Saturdays from 4-4:45 p.m. in the Basilica. Marriage: Couples must arrange their wedding ceremony at least 6 months beforehand. Every couple must attend a Pre-Cana meeting. Log on to: for dates and registration or call Sacrament of the Sick: If you know you are going to be hospitalized, consider receiving the Sacrament of Anointing beforehand at any weekday Mass. Ask the priest before Mass in the sacristy. Communion to the Homebound: Our Eucharistic Ministers are happy to bring Holy Communion to the homebound. To arrange this, please call the Rectory. Baptism: Parents wishing to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism with their children must attend a "Registration and Instruction Session" on the First Saturday of any month at 11 am in the Basilica Conference Center. At these sessions it will be necessary for both parents to attend, and to bring a copy of the baby's birth certificate. Necessary registration forms will be completed, the required instruction will take place, and the Baptism will be scheduled. Remember, both Godparents must be Catholic, 16 years old, and must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Godparents may attend these sessions but are not required to do so. Baptisms are celebrated in English on the third Saturday of each month at noon in the Basilica. Once this session is completed, you may schedule the ceremony for any month. Baptisms are celebrated in Spanish on the second Saturday of each month at noon in the Basilica. Spanish Registration and Instructions on the first Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Basilica Conference Center. It is no longer necessary to come to the Rectory Office to set up a Baptism celebration. You may call the rectory for Chinese or Italian Baptisms. 5 PAGE FIVE MARCH 3, 2019 From the Pastor's Desk... The members of the Church have suffered a lot of pain and anguish in these past few months. The unfolding of the story of the sexual abuse of minors which has taken place, is not only here, but in countries all over the world. We see the most news reports about the United States, and they are bad enough. We cannot pin blame or point fingers or claim to know the answers to the many questions this has raised, but we must not forget that innocent children became victims and many still suffer from the memories of what took place even many years ago. Fortunately, our Diocese has initiated programs to help victims of abuse and to help prevent abuse from happening again. In fact, since the Diocesan prevention programs were introduced 17 years ago, no more than two cases of abuse of a minor by a Priest or Deacon have been reported in our Diocese. One case is more than enough, but at least we can say that our programs are working. The media will go into much detail because they love the sins of the Church, but we do not need to add to the horror story. What we should do instead is offer our prayers to Our Lady, who is the Mother of all, for healing and help. We need to pray also for the leaders of the Church so they can vigorously rid the Church of these crimes. We need to pray for the victims of abuse of every kind that our Blessed Mother will help them to heal these horrible wounds. There are many painful stories involved, and some yet to be told. Please pray that people can be healed and be at peace with themselves, the Church and their loving God. Rev. Msgr. Ronald T. Marino The Holy Father speaks Let us enter into the mystery of the sorrowful heart of God who is Father, and let us speak with Him as we witness the many calamities of our time. As of tomorrow, we will live several days of dialogue and communion, of listening and discernment. May it be a time of conversion. We don't proclaim ourselves, but He who died for us. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to sustain us during these days and to help us transform this evil into an opportunity for awareness and purification. Lord, you know how we resist placing the sufferings of others in our heart. Open our hearts and shape them in your image. Lord, deliver us from the temptation to want to save ourselves, and our reputations; help us to acknowledge our guilt and to seek humble and concrete answers together, and in communion with all the People of God. Every abuse is an atrocity. In people's justified anger, the Church sees the reflection of the wrath of God. It is our duty to listen attentively to this silent cry God s love is the only power capable of making all things new.

6 PAGE SIX MARCH 3, 2019 NEW PRECIOUS BLOOD CHALICES ARE AVAILABLE FOR MEMORIALIZATION You may have noticed that we have not offered the Precious Blood to you at communion time because of the dangerous flu and cold season. We do this every year. We will resume this on Holy Thursday at the Mass of the Lord's Supper. To prepare for this, we have purchased 10 new Gold Communion cups. Each one can be engraved with the memory of one of your loved ones. The offering for this is $350 each. We also sent out our Processional Cross and the main gates to the altar to be refinished and polished. Donations for these will also be welcome. In order to have them engraved in time, we ask those who might wish to participate in this to come forward soon. Your generosity is gratefully appreciated. JOSEPH CHAPEL ASH WEDNESDAY MARCH 6, 2019 Before going to Confession: Recall your sins (examination of conscience). Prayerfully ask yourself what you have done with full knowledge and full consent against God s and the Church s commandments. How to go to Confession: Introduction: When you come before the priest, begin by making the Sign of the Cross (praying the words out loud), and continue, "Bless me, Father, I have sinned. It has been since my last confession. These are my sins... Confession: List the sins you have committed that came to mind when doing your examination of conscience. Penance: The priest will suggest something for you to do or pray as a response to God s mercy. You ll have to remember what this is and do it after the confession is over, so pay attention. Contrition: The priest will then ask you to pray your Act of Contrition, demonstrating your sorrow for your sins. This needs to be prayed out loud for the priest to hear. Absolution: The priest will extend his hands in your direction and he will pray the Prayer of Absolution: God, the Father of Mercies, through the death and resurrection of his Son, has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the Church, may God grant you pardon and peace. And I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. You respond: Amen Conclusion: The priest will then likely say something like, God has freed you from your sin. Go in Peace. To which you can respond: Thanks be to God. Don t forget to do your penance. If it is saying certain prayers, it s best to do it right away in the church.
