D, P G M Confessions: Every weekday morning after Mass in the Basilica you may ask the Priest for confession. Saturdays from 4-4:45 p.m. in the Basilica. Marriage: Couples must arrange their wedding ceremony at least 6 months beforehand. Every couple must attend a Pre-Cana meeting. Log on to: for dates and registration. Sacrament of the Sick: If you know you are going to be hospitalized, consider receiving the Sacrament of Anointing beforehand at any weekday Mass. Ask the priest before Mass in the sacristy. Communion to the Homebound: Our Eucharistic Ministers are happy to bring Holy Communion to the homebound. To arrange this, please call the Rectory. Baptism: Parents wishing to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism with their children must attend a "Registration and Instruction Session" on the First Saturday of any month at 11 am in the Basilica Conference Center. At these sessions it will be necessary for both parents to attend, and to bring a copy of the baby's birth certificate. Necessary registration forms will be completed, the required instruction will take place, and the Baptism will be scheduled. Remember, both Godparents must be Catholic, 16 years old, and must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Godparents may attend these sessions but are not required to do so. Baptisms are celebrated in English on the third Saturday of each month at noon in the Basilica. Once this session is completed, you may schedule the ceremony for any month. Baptisms are celebrated in Spanish on the second Saturday of each month at noon in the Basilica. Spanish Registration and Instructions on the first Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Basilica Conference Center. It is no longer necessary to come to the Rectory Office to set up a Baptism celebration. You may call the rectory for Chinese or Italian Baptisms. 5 PAGE FIVE MARCH 11, 2018 DAILY EUCHARISTIC PRAYER IN LENT The Holy Eucharist will be exposed for private prayer EVERY MORNING after the 8:30am Mass in St. Joseph Chapel until 12 noon. We encourage you to come and pray on the mornings of Lent. GROW IN THE FAITH EVERY TUESDAY evening in Lent at 7:30pm we will gather in the Basilica Conference Center for small group discussions of topics pertaining to our faith and practice. These groups will be conducted by our priests in our different language groups. Doing something positive like this is what we should be doing in Lent. The Holy Season of Lent is a time of special graces for those who are sincere. It calls for extra prayer, fasting at times, giving to the poor or some charity and performing acts of charity. These activities of our parish are simple suggestions and opportunities for anyone who wants to join in our efforts as a parish community. You are also encouraged to plan your own personal activities along with these to make this Lent a time of spiritual growth and enrichment. 6 PAGE SIX MARCH 11, 2018 What can I do as a Parishioner to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life? Serve in the parish ministry. In the Gospels Jesus directs each of us to a life of service. Your service in the activities of your parish will help create the life-giving environment necessary for nurturing of religious and priestly vocations. Let us fulfill this Gospel message by sharing our gifts. Pray. Of all the ways we can work toward the increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life, prayer is undoubtedly the most essential. Make a commitment to pray for this intention everyday. Also consider praying for a particular priest or religious in your parish. Participation in Vocation Awareness Week. Take part in the events of Vocation Awareness Week by praying with others throughout the diocese for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Check the bulletin for details regarding vocation activities. Your presence and support will enhance the effectiveness of these events. The Holy Father speaks His Message for Lent 2018 A cold heart In his description of hell, Dante Alighieri pictures the devil seated on a throne of ice, in frozen and loveless isolation. We might well ask ourselves how it happens that charity can turn cold within us. What are the signs that indicate that our love is beginning to cool? More than anything else, what destroys charity is greed for money, the root of all evil (1 Tim 6:10). The rejection of God and his peace soon follows; we prefer our own desolation rather than the comfort found in his word and the sacraments. All this leads to violence against anyone we think is a threat to our own certainties : the unborn child, the elderly and infirm, the migrant, the alien among us, or our neighbour who does not live up to our expectations. Creation itself becomes a silent witness to this cooling of charity. The earth is poisoned by refuse, discarded out of carelessness or for self-interest. The seas, themselves polluted, engulf the remains of countless shipwrecked victims of forced migration. The heavens, which in God s plan, were created to sing his praises, are rent by engines raining down implements of death. Love can also grow cold in our own communities. In the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, I sought to describe the most evident signs of this lack of love: selfishness and spiritual sloth, sterile pessimism, the temptation to self-absorption, constant warring among ourselves, and the worldly mentality that makes us concerned only for appearances, and thus lessens our missionary zeal. "REGINA PACIS VOLUN TEENS" This group is lead by Msgr. Marino and Fr. Nicholas. We meet every two weeks on Sunday after the 12 noon Mass in the Conference Center. The next meeting is March 18th. Lenten Regulations 2018 ABSTINENCE All the faithful who have reached 14 years of age are required to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. FASTING All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions during the day. EASTER DUTY After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season beginning with the First Sunday of Lent (Feb. 18) to the celebration of Pentecost (May 20).

7 PAGE SEVEN MARCH 11, 2018 Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Lent. In our Gospel reading from John 3:14-21, Jesus spoke with a man named Nicodemus, telling him that everyone who believes in Jesus will have everlasting life. God loves us so very much that He sent his only son, who was both human and divine to give his life so that we might have life forever with God in heaven. Jesus told Nicodemus that, Whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. If we are honest and good, we are not afraid to let others see our actions. This week, focus on letting all of your actions shine with the love you feel for your family, for God and for others! Jesus le dijo a Nicodemo lo siguiente: Quien obra conforme a la verdad se acerca a la luz para que se vea claramente que todo lo hace de acuerdo a la voluntad de Dios. Si nosotros somos buenos y honestos, no tendremos miedo de dejar a otros que vean nuestras acciones.
