Parents and godparents must attend a baptismal preparation class before the baptism. Other requirements will be discussed at the initial interview. Matrimony-Weddings are celebrated throughout the year. In accord with Church Law, at least one of the parties to be married must be a member of St. Joseph, otherwise special permissions are needed. Marriage preparation is to begin at least 6 months prior to the wedding. It is strongly recommended that a couple planning to be married at St. Joseph contact the Parish before making any contractual arrangements with a facility for their reception. During the initial interview with the priest of the Parish, the couple will be provided with all the necessary information needed for their preparation expenence. 3 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As election campaigns move into high gear, sometimes the phrase "the Catholic vote" is heard. It's an interesting concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the time of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the population by It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics waiting patiently for the occasional visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devotional prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jeanlouis Cheverus told one family in Maine to "every day say your prayers on your knees with affection, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism." Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from generation to generation, with very little encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest time. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fertile soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country. -Rev. In October, in a special way, Catholic Christians honor Mary as both the Mother of God and our own mother. One way to honor Mary is to pray the Rosary, a beautiful meditation on the life of Christ. The Rosary is an invitation to experience the grace of Mary's spiritual motherhood as she leads us to her Son, Jesus. At St. Joseph's Church, the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters invite you to pray the Rosary during October every Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Check the bulletin for other Rosary events this month and throughout the year. Pamphlets describing the Rosary and its "mysteries" are available in the pamphlet rack in the back of the church. Look for the titles "Pray the Rosary Daily" and "Yo Soy la Senora del Santo Rosario." 4 WHAT TO DO WHEN WE HAVE A GUEST PRIEST, AND THERE IS NO DEACON There will be a training of ministers who serve at the mass, after the 7:30 a.m. Rosary, Saturday, November 3. All are welcomed to join us for Mass. All ministers from Ushers, Greeters, Sacristans, Extra-ordinary Ministers, Choir, etc. (Altar Servers are invited too!) 5 There are 3,000 pro-life pregnancy centers in Knights of Columbus jurisdictions. Our local councils are encouraged to "adopt" one and provide support. These pregnancy centers can help women choose life. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson announced the Ultrasound Initiative in The Knights have donated 979 ultrasound machines, valued at $48 million. The lives saved though this initiative: priceless. Please join us for a Halloween pancake breakfast next Sunday, Oct. 28 after all morning Masses. 6 SCHOOL NEWS Guardian Angel Fund Saint Joseph's has 214 students in the school. This is wonderful news. Kathy van Loan and I do not want to refuse anyone a Catholic Education. There are some families that are large, and need your help. Even with scholarship money and making payments many find themselves overwhelmed. I am pleading to you to, be a Guardian Angel! I myself was sponsored throughout my Catholic School Education by a wonderful lady named, Colleen Newman, now deceased. My parents wouldn't have been able to pay the tuition for all 13 of their children if not for help from generous people like Colleen.
