Francis Conversion After his short military stint, Francis of Assisi went into the crumbling St. Damien Chapel to pray. Here, God told him, Go Francis, and repair my house, which you see is falling into ruin. Taking this literally, Francis stole expensive fabrics from his father s shop and sold them, giving the money to the priest of St. Damien. Disgusted at the ill-gotten money, he thrust it as Francis. What followed was his father s violent rage. Francis went to live in a cave for a month to escape the storm. A filthy, starving Francis dragged himself back into town, whereby his father forced him home, beat him and locked him up. While his father was away on business, Francis mother released him, and he took shelter with the village priest. From then on, he began to pray and repent for his worldly ways. Called before the city consuls by his father, Francis gave up his inheritance and all his worldly goods. One morning in 1208, while attending Mass, Francis heard the Gospel message of Christ telling his disciples that they were to possess neither gold or silver, nor shoes, nor two coats. They were to go out into the world with God s message and encourage sinners to repent. Francis took this as his life s mission and set forth to do so.
