3 LAFAYETTE-ORINDA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SUNDAY WORSHIP BULLETIN SUPPLEMENT Introit: Now Let Us All Praise God and Sing Text and Music: Gordon Young ( ) Now let us all praise God and sing our great Redeemer s praise That we may all with one accord our joyful voices raise Sing Alleluia! All ye servants of the Lord, praise Him forever Sing Jehovah s mighty pow r, praise Him forever Sing of His righteousness, praise Him forever So let us all praise God and sing our great Redeemer s praise That we may all with one accord our joyful voices raise Sing Alleluia! Call to Worship One: One: One: We have gathered today in search of reformation. We want to reform ourselves, our church, and our society. We stand fearless at the edge of change. For God is in the midst of us and we shall not be moved. Be still, and know that God is God. God is our rock and our redeemer. Opening Hymn: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (Hymnal #275, verses 1, 2, 4) Text: Martin Luther, 1529; trans, Frederick Henry Hedge, 1852; Music: Martin Luther 1529, alt. A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing Our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate On earth is not his equal Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing Were not the right man on our side, the man of God s own choosing Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he. Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle That word above all earthly power, no thanks to them, abideth The Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also The body they may kill; God s truth abideth still His kingdom is forever
4 Prayer of Confession Loving God, you promise that all who faithfully confess to you will be forgiven and preserved from trouble. Trusting in your mercy, we acknowledge the harm that we have done, and the good we have failed to do. Forgive us, we pray; guide us in your truth, and teach us the way to go, that we may love and serve you well. Response: Our Great Savior Text and Music by John Chapman and Rowland Prichard Jesus, what a Friend for sinners, Jesus, Lover of my soul Friends may fail me, foes assail me He, my Savior, makes me whole refrain: Hallelujah, what a Savior, Hallelujah, what a Friend! Saving, helping, keeping, loving, He is with me to the end Jesus, what a Strength in weakness, let me hide myself in Him Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing, He, my Strength, my vict ry wins. refrain Jesus, I do now receive Him, more than all in Him I find He has granted me forgiveness, I am His, and He is mine. refrain Scripture: Philippians 4:10 20 I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned for me, but had no opportunity to show it. Not that I am referring to being in need; for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. In any case, it was kind of you to share my distress. You Philippians indeed know that in the early days of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you alone. For even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me help for my needs more than once. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the profit that accumulates to your account. I have been paid in full and have more than enough; I am fully satisfied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
5 Preparation for Prayer: The Lord s My Shepherd (Hymnal #801) Text: Scottish Psalter, 1650; Music: Jessie Seymour Irvine, 1872; harm. T. C. L. Pritchard, 1929 The Lord s my shepherd, I ll not want He makes me down to lie In pastures green He leadeth me The quiet waters by My soul he doth restore again And me to walk doth make Within the paths of righteousness E en for his own name s sake Yea, though I walk in death s dark vale Yet will I fear none ill For thou art with me and thy rod And staff me comfort still My table thou hast furnished In presence of my foes My head though dost with oil anoint And my cup overflows Goodness and mercy all my life Shall surely follow me And in God s house forevermore My dwelling place shall be The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
6 Offering: A Song for All Time Words: James Montgomery ( ); Music: Alan Robert Petker (b. 1955) Song of praise the angels sang Heav n with alleluias rang When creation was begun When God spoke and it was done Heav n and earth must pass away! Songs of praise shall crown that day! God will make new heav n and earth Songs of praise shall hail their birth Saints below with heart and voice Still in songs of praise rejoice Learning here by faith and love Songs of praise to sing above We Remember: The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended Text: John Ellerton, 1870, alt.; Music: Clement Cottewill Scholefield, 1874 The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended The darkness falls at thy behest To thee our morning hymns ascended Thy praise shall hallow now our rest We thank thee that thy church unsleeping While earth rolls onward into light Through all the world a watch is keeping And rests not now by day or night As o er each continent and island the dawn leads on another day The voice of prayer is never silent Nor dies the song of praise away So be it, Lord; thy throne shall never Like earth s proud empires, pass away Thy kingdom stands, and grows forever Until there dawns thy glorious day. Amen.
