LAFAYETTE-ORINDA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SUNDAY WORSHIP BULLETIN SUPPLEMENT Call to Worship We gather together in the name of Jesus Christ members of God s family, and brothers and sisters to one another. There are no outsiders here among us, no one has any special standing or bragging rights. For we have been brought together by the redeeming love of Jesus. Let s join together in worship! Come, Let Us Worship God Words and Music by Ray Makeever Come, let us worship God Welcome everyone to the love of God Rest for the weary Food for the hungry Water for the thirsty Hope for the children Welcome everyone to the love of God Songs of Praise: Come, Thou Fount (Hymnal #475) Traditional American Melody; Text by Robert Robinson Come, Thou Fount of every blessing Tune my heart to sing thy grace Streams of mercy never ceasing Call for songs of loudest praise Teach me some melodious sonnet Sung by flaming tongues above Praise the mount! I m fixed upon it Mount of God s unchanging love Here I raise my Ebenezer Hither by thy help I m come And I hope, by thy good pleasure Safely to arrive at home Jesus sought me when a stranger Wandering from the fold of God He, to rescue me from danger Interposed His precious blood O to grace how great a debtor Daily I m constrained to be!

Let that grace now, like a fetter Bind my wand ring heart to Thee Prone to wander, Lord I feel it Prone to leave the God I love Here s my heart, O take and seal it Seal it for thy courts above Reading: Psalm 32:1 7 Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Happy are those to whom the LORD imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. While I kept silence, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD, and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you; at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them. You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance. You Are My Hiding Place Words & Music by Michael Ledner You are my hiding place You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance Whenever I am afraid I will trust in You I will trust in You Let the weak say, I am strong in the strength of the Lord! refrain Preparation for Prayer: All Who Are Thirsty Words & Music by Brenton Brown and Glenn Roberts Verse: All who are thirsty, all who are weak Come to the fountain Dip your heart in the stream of life Let the pain and the sorrow be washed away In the waves of his mercy as deep cries out to deep. We sing Come, Lord Jesus, come 3x, Verse Holy Spirit come 3x

Prayer of Confession Merciful God, we confess that we have strayed from your ways. Like the Prodigal Son, we have wasted our inheritance. You gave us the earth for our home, but we squander earth s resources and hoard its bounty. You gave us neighbors to love, but we pursue selfish ambitions. You gave us the commandments that lead to human flourishing, but we break your law and forsake your love. Forgive us our sin and bring us to repentance. Draw our wandering hearts back to you that we may find freedom in obedience to your love. Response: I Come with Joy Words by Brian Wren; Music: American Folk Melody I come with joy to meet my Lord, forgiven, loved, and free In awe and wonder to recall his life laid down for me, his life laid down for me I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed The new community of love in Christ s communion bread, in Christ s communion bread Chorus: I come with joy to meet my Lord 2x As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, each proud division ends The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends and strangers now are friends And thus with joy we meet our Lord. His presence, always near Is in such friendship better known: we see and praise him here we see and praise him here Chorus 2x Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:16 21 From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Anthem: Blest Are They Text: The Beatitudes, Matthew 5:3 12; Words & Music: David Haas, Vocal Arrangement by D. Haas & M. Joncas Blest are they, the poor in spirit Theirs is the kingdom of God Blest are they, full of sorrow They shall be consoled chorus: Rejoice! And be glad! Blessed are you, holy are you Rejoice! And be glad! Yours is the kingdom of God! Blest are they who show mercy Mercy shall be theirs Blest are they, the pure of heart They shall see God! Blest are they who seek peace They are the children of God Blest are they who suffer in faith The glory of God is theirs Sermon: Goodbye Christopher Robin Scriptures (Luke 15:21 24) and a few quotes Then the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his slaves, Quickly, bring out a robe the best one and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found! And they began to celebrate. Inside this story there is another dimension that we shouldn t miss. One of the greatest stories of Israel s past was of course the Exodus, when Israel was brought out of Egypt and came home to the promised land. Many years later, after long rebellion, Israel was sent into exile in Babylon; and though many of the exiles returned, most of Jesus contemporaries reckoned that they were still living in virtual exile, in evil and dark days, with pagans ruling over them. They were still waiting for God to produce a new Exodus, a liberation which would bring them out of their spiritual and social exile and restore their fortunes once and for all. For Jesus to tell a story about a wicked son in a foreign land, who was welcomed back with a lavish party this was bound to be heard as a reference to the hope of Israel. This my son was dead, and is alive yes, says Jesus, and it s happening right here. NT Wright A few years ago, one archduke was shot and the next thing you know 10 million nonarchdukes were shot and for what? What a jolly little farce! But, I know that the final cut is surely coming for archdukes and top hats, and the like, and all the other fools that led ordinary decent folk to the slaughter. So, what can one say except tinkity tonk. A A Milne

The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever Amen. Closing Song: Hear Our Praises Words & Music: Rueben Morgan May our homes be filled with dancing May our streets be filled with joy May injustice bow to Jesus As the people turn to pray refrain: From the mountain to the valley Hear our praises rise to You From the heavens to the nations Hear our singing fill the air May a light shine in the darkness As we walk before the cross May Your glory fill the whole earth As the water o er the seas refrain x2
