LAFAYETTE-ORINDA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SUNDAY WORSHIP BULLETIN SUPPLEMENT Call to Worship One: Many: One: Many: God is mighty in word and deed. God s mercy is everlasting. Blessed be the one holy and living God. Glory to God forever. Songs of Praise: Holy God, We Praise Your Name (Hymnal #4) Text: Attr. Ibnaz Franz, c. 1774; trans. Clarence Alphonsus Walworth, 1858, alt Music: Allgemeines Katholisches Cesangbuch, c. 174; harm. Johann Gottfried Schicht, 1819 Holy God we praise your name; Lord of all, we bow before you All on earth your scepter claim; all in heaven above adore you Infinite your vast domain, everlasting is your reign Hark! The glad celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising Cherubim and seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising Fill the heavens with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy Lord! All apostles join the strain as your sacred name they hallow Prophets swell the glad refrain, and the blessed martyrs follow And from morn to set of sun, through the church the song goes on Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit: three we name you While in essence only one; undivided God we claim you And adoring, bend the knee while we own the mystery Reading: Ephesians 1:3 14; Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God s own people, to the praise of his glory God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion,

and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Preparation for Prayer: In Christ Alone Words and Music: Stuart Townend, Keith Getty, Additional lyrics by Kristian Stanfill; Arr. by Dan Galbraith In Christ alone, my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease My Comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave He rose again And as He stands in victory Sin s curse has lost its grip on me For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the pow r of Christ in me From life s first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny No pow r of Hell, no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from His hand Til He returns or calls me home Here in the pow r of Christ I stand I find my strength, I find my home I find my help in Christ alone When fear assails, when darkness falls I find my peace in Christ alone I give my life, I give my all I sing my song to Christ alone The King of kings, the Lord of All All Heaven sings to Christ alone To Christ alone, in Christ alone Til He returns or calls me home Here in the pow r of Christ I ll stand Here in the pow r of Christ we stand

Anthem: The Church s One Foundation Text: Samuel J. Stone, 1866; Music: Samuel Wesley, 1864, arr. by Dan Forrest The church s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord She is His new creation by water and the Word From heav n He came and sought her to be His holy bride With His own blood He bought her, and for her life He died Elect from every nation, yet one o er all the earth Her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth One holy Name she blesses, partakes one holy food And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued Though with a scornful wonder we see her sore oppressed By schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed Yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up How long? And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we Like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with Thee Amen Sermon: Why Does the Church Change Its Mind on Issues? The Scriptures Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2) For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made. So they are without excuse; for though they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their senseless minds were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools; and they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling a mortal human being or birds or four-footed animals or reptiles. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the degrading of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. (Romans 1:19-25) Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For no human being will be justified in his sight by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. (Romans 3:19-20)

What then should we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet, if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, You shall not covet. But sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died, and the very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an opportunity in the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good. Did what is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, working death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. (Romans 7:7-13) For we know that the law is spiritual; but I am of the flesh, sold into slavery under sin. I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh I am a slave to the law of sin. (Romans 7:14-25) And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual. Those who are unspiritual do not receive the gifts of God s Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Corinthians 2:13-14) For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. (1 Corinthians 13:12)

Song of Response: Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah (Hymnal #65) Text: William Williams, 1762; stanza 1, trans. Peter Williams, 1771; stanzas 2 3, trans William Williams, 1772; Music: John Hughes, 1907 Guide me, O thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land I am weak, but thou art mighty. Hold me with thy powerful hand Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more Feed me till I want no more Open now the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through Strong deliverer, strong deliverer, I will ever give to thee I will ever give to thee When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside Death of death, and hell s destruction, land me safe on Canaan s side Songs of praises, songs of praises I will ever give to thee I will ever give to thee The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever Amen. Offering: Now Thank We All Our God Text: Martin Rinkart ( ), tr. by Catherine Winkworth ( ); Music: Johann Cruger ( ), harmonized by Felix Mendelssohn ( ), arranged by Mark Hayes Now thank we all our God. Give thanks unto our God! Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices Who wondrous things has done, in whom this world rejoices Who, from our mother s arms, has blest us on our way With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today Now thank we all our God O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us Through ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us And keep us in good grace, and guide us when perplexed And free us from all ills in this world and the next All praise and thanks to God, now joyfully be given The Son, and God who reigns with them in highest heaven The one eternal God, whom earth and heav n adore
