3 LAFAYETTE-ORINDA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SUNDAY WORSHIP BULLETIN SUPPLEMENT Introit: Awake, My Heart Text: Paulus Gerhardt, 1647; tr. by Winfred Douglas; Music: Jane M. Marshall (b. 1924) Awake, my heart, and render to God thy sure defender thy Maker, thy preserver A song of love and fervor Confirm my deeds and guide me My day, with thee beside me beginning, middle, ending Will all be upward tending My heart shall be thy dwelling With joy and gladness swelling Thy word my nurture, giv n to bring me toward heaven Opening Hymn: Immortal Invisible (Hymnal #12) Text: Walter Chalmers Smith, 1867, alt.; Music: Welsh folk melody; arr. Caniadau y Cyssegr, 1839; tune: St. Denio Immortal, invisible, God only wise in light inaccessible hid from our eyes most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might thy justice, like mountains high soaring above; thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love To all, life thou givest, to both great and small In all life thou livest, the true life of all We blossom and flourish like leaves on the tree then wither and perish; but naught changeth thee Thou reignest in glory; thou dwellest in light Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight All praise we would render; O help us to see tis only the splendor of light hideth thee! Preparation for Prayer: As The Deer Words and Music by Martin Nystrom As the deer panteth for the water, so my soul longeth after Thee You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship Thee refrain: You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship Thee

4 You re my friend and You are my brother even though You are a King I love You more than any other, so much more than anything refrain I want You more than gold or silver, only You can satisfy You alone are the real joy giver and the apple of my eye refrain Prayer in Song: Prayer of Being Words and Music by Mark Hayes (b. 1953) Be in my life, be in my breath Be in my walk, be in my rest Be in this humble heart of mine Be ever present in my mind Be in my hands, be in my feet Be in my eyes and in my speech Be in the smile I give away Be in each healing word I say Be in my work, be in my play Be in the struggles of each day Be in my joy, be in my pain Be in my loss, be in my gain Be in my thoughts, be in my song Be in my spirit all day long Be in my prayers at dawn s first light Be in my dreams all through the night Amen The prayer of my heart forever shall be I in You and only You in me Response: To God Be The Glory (Hymnal #634) Texts: Fanny Jane Crosby, 1875; Music: William Howard Doane, 1875; tune: To God Be The Glory To God be the glory, great things he has done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son who yielded his life an atonement for sin and opened the life-gate that all may go in refrain: Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son and give him the glory: great things he has done! Great things he has taught us; great things he has done and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son but purer and higher and greater will be our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see refrain

5 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:12 31 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot would say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear would say, Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. Scripture: Colossians 3:12 17 As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

6 Response: Seek Ye First (Hymnal #175) Text: Stanza 1, Karen Lafferty, 1971, alt.; Stanza 2 3, anon.; Music: Karen Lafferty; tune: Lafferty Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. Allelu, alleluia! Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and the door shall be opened unto you. Allelu, alleluia! You shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Allelu, alleluia! The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Closing Hymn: Be Thou My Vision Text: Irish poem; trans. Mary E. Byrne, 1905; vers. Eleanor Hull, 1912, alt.; Music: Irish ballad; harm. David Evans, 1927; tune: Slane Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart naught be all else to me, save that thou art thou my best thought, by day or by night waking or sleeping, thy presence my light Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true Word I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord Thou my soul s shelter, and thou my high tower raise thou me heaven-ward, O Power of my power Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise thou my inheritance, now and always thou and thou only, first in my heart Great God of Heaven, my treasure thou art
