MAP OF PETERSBURG METRO

NEVSKY AVENUE Value: the main street of Saint-Petersburg Name Origin: the avenue runs from the Admiralty building and ends near the Saint Alexander Nevsky Lavra, where the relics of St. Alexander Nevsky are located. Alexander Nevsky defeated the Swedes on the banks of the Neva River in Originally Prospect was called The road to the Nevsky monastery, but later this name was shortened. Quote: There is nothing better than the Nevsky Prospekt, at least not in St. Petersburg; for this city it represents everything (N.Gogol). Legend: Nevsky Avenue isn t straight: it has a kink roughly half way along, in the Vosstaniya Square. The road was built from two ends: the Russian monks were working from the side of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, and the Swedish prisoners of war were advancing towards them from the opposite side. When they met, it turned out that there was a mistake in the calculations, so a slight bend turned out. Peter the Great immediately ordered to punish the monks, as he was sure that the captured Swedes were Europeans, so they could not allow such a gross blunder.

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS Kazan Cathedral The main Russian Orthodox Church in St. Petersburg The Book House If you don t visit the House of Books, you re just smoking the sky (St. Petersburg s proverb) Church of the Savior on Blood The most cheerful church in the city that is built on the place of a murder Griboedov Canal The name of A. S. Griboedov would be very surprised

KAZAN CATHEDRAL Place: Nevsky Prospekt Construction time: Architect: Andrey Voronikhin Style: Empire, Late Classicism Remarkable features: The building was designed to become an Orthodox analogue of the main Catholic church, St. Peter s Basilica in Vatican, and the colonnade was built as an analogue of the famous Bernini s Colonnade. The emperor Paul I decided to oppose Petersburg to Vatican after the refusal of the Pope to recognize him as a Grand Master of the Order of Malta. The Pope referred to the fact that the Order was not only chivalric, but also monastic, but Paul I was married twice and had ten children.

Inside: Miraculous Icon Our Lady of Kazan (the most revered copy from the icon lost in our days; the original icon was found in Kazan in 1579; Minin and Pozharsky had this icon during the liberation of Moscow from the Poles) Grave of Mikhail Kutuzov Interesting facts: The construction of the cathedral was finished in The next year the war against Napoleon broke out. When Napoleon was defeated, captured enemy banners were put in the newly built cathedral, and Mikhail Kutuzov, the famous Russian Field Marshal who beat Napoleon, was buried inside the church. After the war, the monuments of Russian Field Marshals and heroes of the war of 1812, Mikhail Kutuzov and Michael Barclay de Tolly, were placed before the cathedral. Quote: Barclay de Tolly and Kutuzov Were freezing the French in winter. And for this reason the Russians glorified them And placed them in cold without hats (Comic verses born after the installation of the monuments)

Mystery: On the main facade of the cathedral, you can notice the All Seeing Eye, which can also be seen on dollar bills. Researchers confirm that the Masons use this sign as a symbol of the Creator God. On the other hand, the sign with this meaning appeared in Renaissance, two centuries before the formation of the first Masonic organizations. It is worth saying that Mikhail Golenishchev-Kutuzov held a high position among the domestic Masons. Cathedral open to the public. In the cathedral it is forbidden to take photos, men should remove headdress, ladies put it on. If necessary, scarf can be bought directly in the cathedral. Details on wikipedia

HOUSE OF BOOKS Place: Nevsky Prospekt Construction time: Architect: Pavel Suzor Style: Art Nouveau Remarkable features: Here, for the first time in Russia, a metal frame, elevators, automatic cleaning system of the roof and other innovations were used in the construction of the building. Value: The main bookstore in the city, a brilliant example of Art Nouveau architecture. Interesting fact: In the top floor of the building, there are the headquarters of the largest Russian social network VKontakte

Initial function: The building was constructed for the Singer Manufacturing Company. Legends: In Imperial Petersburg, it was forbidden to build anything higher than the Winter Palace. The exceptions were the domes of churches and the spires of old buildings. However, the glass dome of the Book House is definitely higher than the imperial residence. It is believed that the question was decided by huge bribe to the governor (the reason why he lost his post). Details on wikipedia

CHURCH OF THE SAVIOR ON BLOOD Place: Griboyedov Canal Construction time: Architects: Alfred Parland, archimandrite Ignaty (Malishev) Style: Pseudo-Russian Remarkable features: In keeping with the instructions of Alexander III, the church was designed on the model of old Russian Orthodox churches in Moscow and Yaroslavl, constructed of XVI-XVII centuries. Therefore, the similarity with St. Basil s Cathedral on Red Square is not accidental. Symbolic meaning: The church is a memorial to Alexander II. The emperor, who abolished the serfdom, was wounded mortally in this place on March 1, 1881 because of the eighth assassination attempt on him. At the bottom of the church, there are the granite plaques with the main events of his reign. On the bell tower, you can see the emblems of the Russian cities and provinces the symbols of national grief for the murdered emperor.

The pavement, where the emperor fell after the fatal explosion, was preserved inside the church. The cathedral is decorated inside and outside with more than 7000 square meters of mosaics. Interesting facts: In Soviet time, the Bolsheviks wanted to blow up the church, and only the beginning of the Great Patriotic War ( ) broke down their plans. Before the War, a vegetable warehouse took place inside the church, during the War there was a morgue and after the place for scenery of Small Theater of Opera and Ballet. Cathedral reopened to the public only in About Museum: The cathedral functions as a museum. Working hours: 11:00 a.m.-18:00 p.m. (in summertime a.m. 22:30p.m.). Day off: Wednesday. 15 GRIBOEDOV CANAL Place: Originates in the Moika River and flows into the Fontanka River. Name: The canal was arranged, deepened and made navigable by the order of Catherine the Great, and thus named The Catherine s Canal. But in the Soviet time this naming reminded of the emperors, so the canal was renamed in the honor of the author of the comedy Woe from Wit Alexander Griboedov, who really rented an apartment for a while in one of the houses on this canal. Interesting facts: a considerable part of Feodor Dostoevsky s heroes lived along the banks of the Griboedov Canal. For example, Sonia Marmeladova and the old moneylender. Raskolnikov himself lived near the Canal, which the author of Crime and Punishment grimly calls the ditch. Details on wikipedia

Countess was afraid of column could fall because it didn t have any additional support and stood under its own weight only. In Soviet time this story was told to emphasize ignorance of Russian aristocracy. But author of the monument A. Monferrand was a bad engineer indeed. Columns of St. Isaak cathedral, his main architectural work, needed several repairings to strengthen them within century and a half passed after the end of construction works. Fortunately, Alexander column doesn t need such interventions. But countess Tolstaya was perfectly right to be worried Details on wikipedia

WINTER PALACE Place: Palace Square Construction time: Architect: Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli Style: Russian Baroque Remarkable features: The building is decorated with abundant moldings, columns and pilasters with ornamental purposes only. Numerous images of human faces and animal snouts have no symbolic meaning, as well as the sculptures on the roof of the building. The Italian architect decided to place that sculptures to hide protruding chimneys that were making him angry. Inside the Winter Palace, there are more than 1,000 rooms, but only a few hundred of them are open to the public.

Value: The main residence of the Russian emperors from Catherine II to Nicholas II. Our days: The main building of the State Hermitage Museum, the largest museum in Russia and the fourth largest museum in the world (after the British Museum, the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum in New York). He splashed an acid on it in 1985 and its restoration took 10 years. Interesting fact: There are more than 3 million items in the Hermitage collection. To look at each of them for just one minute, you need to spend about 8 years without rest or sleep. Wrong belief: The State Hermitage Museum complex includes five buildings connected by passages. The building of the Winter Palace is only one of them. Therefore, it s incorrect to tell that the Winter Palace and the Hermitage are the same building. Opening hours: Tue, Thu, Sat, Sun: 10:30am-6pm, Wed, Fri: 10:30am pm, Mon: closed. Tickets: 600 rubles, students and kids- free of charge.

Guide recommendations: You should never combine the visiting of Hermitage with a sightseeing tour this entertainment is not for the faint of the heart! It is a usual thing, to spend several hours standing in line to the Hermitage Museum. Therefore, it is better to decide earlier what you want to see in the Hermitage. Otherwise, you will aimlessly wander the museum for half an hour, and then, tired, you will go to drink a cup of coffee. Maybe it is better to drink a cup of coffee without waiting for a few hours and continue walking around the city? However, to be serious, it is better not to spend more than 3 hours in the Hermitage and to go there with a good guide or guidebook. Details on wikipedia

STORMING OF THE WINTER PALACE It is well known that the storming of the Winter Palace was the culmination point of the Great October Socialist Revolution. Most of our representations about the Storming are based on this scene, which looks for us like documentary nowadays. Not surprisingly, you can see it in each telecast or documentary film about the Russian Revolution. However, this scene from the film October is nothing more than Sergei Eisenstein s creative fantasy. In fact, on October 25, after the signal from the cruiser Aurora at 09:40 p.m., the revolutionaries broke into the Palace Square, but were met by shots of the Women s Battalion of Death (units formed by the Provisional Government to raise the patriotic spirit in the army and to shame the male soldiers, who refuse to fight). Revolutionaries retreated under the arch of the General Staff and began the negotiations. As a result, women and cadets (cadets of military schools) abandoned their positions. Revolutionary soldiers and sailors freely entered the Winter Palace through the open doors, but the famous gates remained locked. The Provisional Government was arrested only at 2:40 a.m. on October 26, Details on wikipedia

SENATE SQUARE Value: here the first attempt to commit the Russian revolution failed in December 14, Name: here is the Senate and Synod building. Wrong belief: At first sight, the Decembrist revolt looked pretty strange. One frosty morning soldiers, officers and civilian rebels came to the Senate Square and stood there for several hours, until they were shot at point-blank by artillery of Emperor Nicholas I. Since such actions (or rather idleness) of Decembrists seem surprising, in the popular historical literature sometimes one can read that the revolt was a political demonstration and the heroes were on their way because they just wanted to die for the idea. In fact, it was well-planned, but badly implemented military coup. The purpose of this coup was to establish a constitutional monarchy or republic form of government in Russia. However, the inaction of the rebels during the revolt was a result of leaders betrayal. The Leaders did not come to the Square and that is why the soldiers and officers simply did not know what they had to do.

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS Bronze Horseman the most famous monument of St. Petersburg. Senate and Synod building it makes Petersburg second capital of Russia. Saint Isaac s Cathedral the largest cathedral in St. Petersburg, it was being constructed during 40 years. Admiralty the Navy Staff of Russia.

BRONZE HORSEMAN Place: Senate Square Construction time: Sculptors: Étienne Maurice Falconet, Marie-Anne Collot Remarkable features: Peter the Great is represented seated on the horseback, trampling a snake. The snake symbolizes Peter s defeated enemies and a pedestal in waveform the sovereign victory over nature. The monument is made of bronze, but Alexander Pushkin in his eponymous poem called it copper («The Cooper Horseman» рус. «Медный Всадник»). The inscription on the pedestal ( to Peter the First (Primo), Catherine Second (Secunda) ) has a political significance. Catherine II was a pureblood German, and her right to rule was based only on the fact that she was a direct continuer of the ideas of Peter I. In this sense, Peter is the first, and she is the second.

Citation: «He s awful in the nightly dark! In what a thought his brow s sunk! What a great might in it lies, hidden! And what a fire s in this steed! O, proud horse, where do you speed! Where will you down your bronze hoofs, flittin? Interesting facts: The base of the monument is a solid granite monolith. Its weight is about 1,500 tones. The lump was found in the outskirts of St. Petersburg, 8.5 km from the coast of the Gulf of Finland. For its transportation, a rolling wooden platform with thirty copper balls was built. During the transportation, a few dozen stonecutters were working right on the rock, giving it a waveform. A special dock was also built on the shore, from which the boulder was loaded onto a specially constructed barge and transported to the Senate Square. This is great boldness say the inscription on the commemorative medal minted in honor of the successful delivery of the monolith. Mystery: This story took place ten years before the installation of the monument. During the walk the future Emperor Paul I met a stranger wrapped in a cloak on the Senate Square. Poor Paul, the stranger said. I m the one who takes part in you. I wish you would not particularly tie to this world, because you will not remain here too long. With these words, the stranger took off his hat and revealed his face it was Peter the Great himself! So Paul I really had ruled only 4 years, 4 months and 4 days, and then was killed.

In the poem The Bronze Horseman by Alexander Pushkin, the statue of Peter I jumped down from the podium while the floods had begun, and rushed throughout the city for the main character Eugene. In the novel Petersburg by Andrei Bely, one of the characters goes mad, kills his friend and sits on a corpse in a pose of Peter the Great with an instrument of crime scissors in hand. In this position the police find him the next morning. Daniel Andreev, the famous mystic writer of the 20th century, in one of his vision saw the infernal analogue of Petersburg, where sun never rises. In that city, Peter the Great sat on the snake, not on the horse. Details on wikipedia

MONUMENT OF ALEXANDER PUSHKIN Place: Square of Arts Construction time: Sculptor: Mikhail Anikushin Style: Classicism Interesting facts: There are many monuments to Alexander Pushkin all over the world, but the most beautiful of them are two: the first one is situated on Pushkin Square in Moscow, and the second one is here, on the Square of Arts in St. Petersburg. The sculptor of the monument in Moscow is Opekushin, in St/ Petersburg Anikushin. Despite the fact that the sculptors have such similar names, they lived at different times, different cities and had no family relations at all. Details on wikipedia

GRAND HOTEL EUROPE Place: Square of Arts Construction time: Architect: Fyodor Lidval Style: Eclectic Value: The most luxuriuos hotel in St.Petersburg. Legend: According to a legend, the script for the cult film «Unbelievable Adventures of Italians in Russia» is based on the story that happened at the Grand Hotel Europe. Before the death, an old emigrant woman told her heir that she had hidden a big treasure before fleeing abroad at the Revolution times. Of course, it was not hidden beneath a lion, but under the floor of one of the hotel Europe rooms. The heir managed to get to the USSR and stayed in the very room on the second floor. At night he began tapping the parquet and searching if there was an empty space. Having removed the flooring, he saw a metal box bolted to the ceilings with a huge nut. Cursing the prudent grandmother, the guest was unscrewing the nut all night. When he had finally succeeded, he heard a terrible noise. During the interrogation by the KGB, the heir found out that the nut was fixing the main hall chandelier on the first floor, and the treasure box was just a special disk to fix the chandelier. 139 GRAND PHILHARMONIC HALL Place: Square of Arts Construction time: 1839 Architect: Paul Jacot Style: Classicism Value: Favorite place for music fans of St. Petersburg Interesting fact: Here on August 9, 1942 in the midst of the blockade, the 7th Leningrad Symphony of Shostakovich was performed. The creation of the Symphony took place during the period of the blockade of the city. The composer himself was evacuated to Kuibyshev. The score was brought to the city by plane. There were only 15 musicians in the Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the rest were either dead or so weak from hunger that they could not play at all. The musicians to the orchestra were sent from the front. During the performance, the symphony was broadcasted through all the loudspeakers of almost dead but not surrendering Leningrad. Citations: «There were loudspeakers and the Germans heard everything. As they said later, the Germans went crazy when they heard it. They thought that the city was dead» (Lelyukhina, flutist) «Then, August 9, 1942, we realized that we would lose this war. We felt your strength, capable to overcome the hunger, fear and even death» (Wehrmacht veterans in the conversation with Eliasberg, who conducted the orchestra that day). Details on wikipedia
