We would like to do something similar this year. We will be accepting donations of whole pumpkins, squash, and gourds to arrange in front of the altar and ambo for Thanksgiving Mass. Please bring your donations to the church by November 11th. They can be put in the vestibule. Thank you for helping our church look beautiful. ADVENT REFLECTION TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4 Theme: Journey to the Manger with Magi Presenter: Msgr. Jack Stoeger (Director: House of prayer for priests) The focus of the entire season of Advent is preparation to celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ in his First Advent, and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King in his Second Advent. 2 St. Francis Xavier Dear friends, From the Desk of Fr. Sebastian, Page Three The story is told that one day a beggar by the roadside asked for alms from Alexander the Great as he passed by. The man was poor and wretched and had no claim upon the ruler, no right even to lift a supplicant hand. Yet the Emperor threw him several gold coins. A courtier was astonished at his generosity and commented, "Sir, copper coins would adequately meet a beggar's need. Why give him gold?" Alexander responded in royal fashion, "Copper coins would suit the beggar's need, but gold coins suit Alexander's giving." The readings today focus on giving. Even though the widow s offering (Mark 12:41-44) was too little to be noticed, Jesus noticed it. This is because giving is the nature of God. As John wrote, For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Jesus continued this act of sharing by giving up his life for the world. In the Eucharistic celebration we proclaim this giving nature of Jesus. Therefore, Christian spirituality consists in participating in the sharing nature of God. There are three progressive stages in sharing: sharing out of surplus; sharing out of poverty; sharing one s own self. Sharing in any form is commendable. However, our role model in giving is Jesus. As Paul wrote to the Hebrews, Jesus didn t just give up his livelihood, but he gave up his godhead, becoming human like us, and then gave up the very human life To give like Jesus did, two things are necessary. First, complete trust in God. As Solomon said, If the Lord does not build a house, then those who build it work in vain; if the Lord does not guard a city, then the watchman stands guard in vain (Psalm 127:1). Giving shows the depth of our trust. Second, sharing also shows the genuineness of our love for another. Our community is extremely exemplary in giving. We are a vibrant community because of your willingness to give freely your Time, Talent and Treasure. We have a lot of activities taking place here on a daily bases. All are because of your goodwill. For example, last weekend we had a very successful fund raiser event: A Nite at the Races under the able leadership of Rita Recker and her team. Thank you so much for your team effort and my sincere appreciation to all participants. I am also thankful to everyone who is in ministry in one way or other. This Tuesday (November 13) we have scheduled a gathering of the Music Ministry and on Wednesday (November 14) similar gathering of the Liturgical Ministries. Anybody wishes to join any of these ministries is also welcome to attend. Ministry is a form of giving. May God bless you. Thank you to all the volunteers who donated time, food, drinks and prizes, and to our wonderful crowd who made the evening a night to remember. 4 St. Francis Xavier EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Adoration is the first acknowledgement of man that he is a creature before his Creator. The Eucharistic Adoration is an extension of the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament which occurs in every Mass: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb." If you really want to grow in love, if you want peace and prosperity, come back to the Eucharist, come back to that Adoration (Mother Theresa). Blessed Sacrament is the LIVING FOUNTAIN OF LIFE where we drink in the love of Christ Who alone quenches our thirst. Here at St. Francis Xavier, we have the opportunity for Eucharistic Adoration: Every Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for all, and every First Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. we are joined by the SFX School students. Please come and stay with the Lord. CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD (For children in the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd Grade) In addition to your child's regular religious education instruction, this program runs through April during the Sunday 10:30 a.m. Mass and is a great opportunity for children to understand the Sunday Gospel at their own age level. After the priest leads the opening prayer at Mass, the children are dismissed to a classroom in the lower school building. They are provided with colorful activities and handouts that enhance what they hear from their adult leaders about the word of God. The children then return to church to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist with the rest of the parish family. This is a free program and no registration is required. There are many ways to participate in helping others during Christmas at St. Francis Xavier. The Peace & Justice Ministry Operation Christmas Joy : We will be collecting monetary donations for the orphanages in the Philippines; Collecting toys and/or gift cards for the children on the Rincon reservation. Karry Luttge will be at the back of church after each of the Masses to provide information on the gifts for the children. A new recipient of our holiday giving is St. Vincent s Meals on Wheels Christmas Stocking Project. These will be distributed to the elderly. Suggested donations are travel-sized items such as: Body soap, Shampoo, Conditioner, Hair brushes, Combs, Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Band-aids, Hand and/or body lotion, Hand soap, Tissues, Mouthwash, Shaving cream, Razors, Pens & pencils, in addition to Socks (men and/or women), Stamps, Stationery, and Crossword puzzle books. And don t throw away those pocket calendars you receive in the mail - they can be used as stocking stuffers. More information on each of these recipients will be in future bulletins. We thank you for your continued support in advance. During November and December we are continuing to collect food donations for the less fortunate. There is no specific item requested for those months. Please place your food donations in the red food cart located in the church breezeway.

Scope Out Your Surroundings While Children Play Parks are great places for children to play freely, test limits, and make new friends. But because they re such popular play zones, that makes them attractive spots for predators. Parents can take concrete steps to ensure their children s safety when they go to local parks and playgrounds. Take note of the people around you especially adults who are alone in the area, on the playground or in nearby cars. Notice the families nearby and keep track of who is playing with your child. Paying attention to your surroundings can help you more fully enjoy your time with your children, all while keeping them safe.
