2 Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; 38 therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. 3 Unlocking our Potential This famous passage about Jesus longing to see more people come into the ministry follows a passage where he heals a mute man. The act of enabling the man to find his voice could be said to speak to us about the importance of Unlocking our Potential. First of all, we are passionate about enabling every member of the diocese to find their voice and contribute to our vision for the future. Secondly, we are also aware of the crowds in our part of north and mid Wales who are lost without God and who need encouragement to find healing and hope in him. To put it simply we need more labourers for the harvest. This prospectus is one way of enabling you to be equipped for the work of ministry. However, this prospectus is not just about learning opportunities but about a new way of serving Christ in our communities - together. The Church in Wales Review revealed that many members felt frustrated; that their gifts were underused or not even used at all. They also identified that we have a deferential culture. In this prospectus we are learning together, whether we are lay or ordained, in licensed ministry or exercising our discipleship in our work and community life. It is one way in which we can express our commitment as a diocese to Shared Ministry. churches and areas to grow and develop teams to work together. Please contact Manon James or Tracey White for more details. Manon Ceridwen James manoncjames@gmail.com Tracey White traceywhite@churchinwales.org.uk We are delighted to be able to offer you this prospectus. Please contact us at the Diocesan Office with your feedback or suggestions for We offer it as one way in which we can grow together in our knowledge of the God of healing, hope and transformation. O God our mystery, you bring us to life, call us to freedom, and move between us with love. May we so participate in your dance of trinity that our lives may resonate with you, now and for ever. Amen. At the heart of this prospectus is the belief that no-one exercises ministry in isolation, we are all called to work together. No one person has all the gifts that s needed in any locality to carry out the mission of the Church. One person s weakness will often be another person s strength, and we can all support one another. This is why all of our courses are open to all so that we learn and grow together and gain the skills we need. We can also offer help and support for 3

4 4 Training together for shared ministry...for Mission At the heart of all we do is the conviction that it s not about keeping the show in the road but about equipping ourselves to serve the world. If there are ways we can support your own discipleship and ministry in your work, community life and family please let us know. Likewise we can offer help and consultancy for churches, mission areas and deaneries for more effective mission and engagement with communities. Please contact Sarah Wheat for more details. sarahwheat@churchinwales.org.uk Ministry of Leading Some of us are called to leadership roles within our churches. In our prospectus you will find information about training for Wardens and Parish Officers. There is also information about training for leadership skills within licensed ministries. For more information about training for officers please contact Tracey White (details on page 3) and for Ordained ministries, John Harvey. revjohnharvey@ googl .com Ministry of Pastoral Care All Christians are called to love our neighbours, in our workplace, community life, at the school gate and within our families. Sometime this will be done through representative ministries of pastoral care, exercised on behalf of the Church. Because the fundamental calling of each Christian is to love, this ministry forms the basis of many licensed and accredited ministries such as that of a Reader, Bishop, Deacon, Priest and more recently within our diocese as a Pastoral Assistant. We all need to receive pastoral care at some stage in our lives. No-one is simply a giver and never just a receiver. If you would like to know more about the ministry of Pastoral Assistant please contact Manon Ceridwen James - details on page 3. Ministry of Leading Worship At the heart of our calling as disciples is to worship God with our lives - not just in services on a Sunday! Leading worship is at the heart of many of our ministries, and we can also offer help in training those who take part in worship such as reading lessons and leading intercessions. The worship leaders course is one way of helping churches sustain creative and lively worship. Please contact Manon Ceridwen James for more information (details on page 3). Ministry of Preaching and Teaching There are many opportunities within church life for those of us who have skills in adult education and children s work to get involved with the educational work of the Church, in Messy Church, Sunday schools, Bible study groups and Lent groups. There are a variety of courses and resources that can be tailored to your needs. In order to preach, you need to be licensed usually as an Ordained Minister or Reader. The contact for Reader ministry is Steven Green on sdgreen1957@gmail.com For Ordained Ministries contact John Harvey (see above). For work among young people and children contact Tim Feak on timfeak@churchinwales.org.uk Ministry of Evangelism All of us are called to share our faith with others. Some of us may be called to be evangelists, and we can provide training in sharing our faith as well as for the office of Evangelist. For more information please contact Sarah Wheat (see above).

6 Living and Learning - Theology for a Pilgrim Church What is God calling me to be and to do? How is God calling us to change and grow as a Church? We would like to empower our congregation and enable them to share in the church s ministry, but how do we go about this? How can we work together more as a Mission Area? If these are the questions you are asking, these courses may be able to help. The Learning Church programme offers two courses: Living and Learning and Exploring Faith. Both are designed to be used by groups from local churches, deaneries and mission areas to enable them to explore together what they believe, grow in discipleship and begin to form ministry teams. The Living and Learning series is a growing collection of six-week discipleship, reflection and training courses, which can be used flexibly and informally by local groups. The course has three core modules designed to help groups consider what God is calling each of them and their Churches to be and to do and to learn to reflect on their life and faith together. They are aimed at everyday church members, the modules do not involve any heavy reading and there are no assignments. These core modules are: 1. A Church for the Future. This module explores what it means to belong to the Church in Wales at a time of change and development and asks questions about our future mission. It allows participants to explore the story of their own faith, the meaning of discipleship, the story of the Church where they are and to begin to reflect on how that story might develop in the future as the world and church change. 2. Living Scripture. This module explores how God is revealed through the scriptures and examines ways in which God s Word can speak most effectively to us and our church today. It is designed to introduce students to the benefits of studying theology in an accessible way and its relevance to their faith. I quite distinctly heard God saying I want you to be a priest...don t rule anything out because you never know what s going to happen or what God s plan for you is. Revd Lorraine Badger-Watts, Curate in Petryal and Betws yn Rhos 3. Called by God. This module explores what it means to be called by God and asks the question, What is God calling us as a church, and me as an individual, to be and do in the future? It introduces students to the range of ways in which it is possible to serve God as a disciple in the world and as a minister in the church. Additional modules then equip those who want training for accredited ministries such as Pastoral Assistant and Worship Leader. All modules are bilingual. New modules are being developed to support a range of ministries and explore other themes, including mission and outreach, spirituality and prayer, church administration and working with children and young people. These will become available through If you have an idea for a module or would like to help, we would like to hear from you. Living and Learning can be followed as a separate programme and you can choose to do whichever modules seem relevant to your local needs. Alternatively it can be studied as an introduction and preparation for anyone who wishes to go on to do Exploring Faith, as it will build the confidence of group members and give them some of the background information and skills they will need to feel confident tackling the more advanced programme. 6

7 If you are thinking of starting a Living and Learning Group in your Mission Area or Parish, the materials are available as printed books from the Diocesan Office in St Asaph for 5 a copy to pay for the printing and translation. They are also available as PDF documents from the Diocesan Website for free for those who wish to do their own printing or work electronically. Setting up a Group Living and Learning is designed to be flexible and can be run however the local context requires but is this the right course and the right time? It does assume a basic knowledge of the Church and of Christianity - it is not an Alpha Course but is written for those who want to deepen an existing commitment to Christian life. It is also intended to be run at a time when local churches are looking to work towards setting up a ministry team and enable lay people to find and train for new roles. Consider timing - each module has six sessions and is designed to be run once a week for roughly 1 ½ hours. You are free to choose which modules you do and when you do them, but if you think that you might want to move on to Exploring Faith afterwards, we would recommend taking the three core modules in order, one each academic term, finishing in the summer, as Exploring Faith also runs on University terms and starts each September. Exploring Faith Exploring Faith is a course run through Glyndwr University and in small groups across the Diocese. It is open to anyone who wishes to take part in serious study and reflection on the Christian faith and discover how academic theology can be of value to our daily life and faith. It can lead to a Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Theology. Exploring Faith is an integral part of the Provincial training for new Readers, deacons and NSM priests within our diocese, and is open to anyone thinking of exploring a calling to one of these ministries. However, in order to be licensed or ordained you need to have been accepted by the relevant board, and have trained as part of the wider Provincial course which includes ministry skills and placements as well as ministerial, personal and spiritual development.
