1 September 2017 Lay Ministry Matters As August passes, Summer gives way to Autumn and the church year focusses on Creationtide and Harvest, followed in turn by the season of Remembrance. August in churches often brings Holiday Clubs for children, and Holidays at Home for older people. For most of us, September means the restarting of church groups and activities which have taken a break. There are more than 500 authorised Lay Ministers in our diocese and between us we serve God in a very wide variety of ministries in the church and in our communities. Those who are especially observant might recognise this wheat picture from last October s Lay Ministry day with Bishop James at St Andrew s Paddock Wood. This Autumn, there will not be day like that but please put November 4 th in your diary. Our meeting at Paddock Wood last year was the first opportunity for any of us to take part in the Our Conversation, Our Future process. Some of us will have repeated this since in parish or deanery contexts, or been members of Lent Course groups. The next stage begins at an event at Rochester Cathedral on 4 th November. As this letter goes to press there are all sorts of plans being made for this event, so for now please keep the date free if you possibly can. We ll send out more details as they become available. Come along and discover for yourself how we can encourage each other in Growing Disciples, Enriching our Communities, and Resourcing our Mission and Ministry. 2 Since the last Lay Ministry Newsletter, Bishop James has licensed 14 new Lay Ministers in the Cathedral on May 20 th. This was also the occasion for him to thank Alison Callway, on behalf of us all, for all her work in the Formation & Ministry Team. I m pleased to say that after a long period off sick last year, Alison has made an extremely good recovery, but she has decided that the time was right to retire rather than to return to work. At the same service Allan Jonnes was commissioned as Deputy Warden of Lay Ministry for Tonbridge Archdeaconry, along with Jackie Bennett. Allan, like the other Deputy Wardens, is a Lay Minister in his own church Christ Church Southborough part of the Southborough Team Ministry. Allan transferred from Reader ministry to LLM in May 2016, and his parish is currently without an incumbent so he is able to fully empathise with those of you in that situation! The Summer has seen a number of Lay Ministers retiring from active ministry, and others leaving the diocese. Mike Echlin from South Gillingham, Roger Cusdin from St Mark s Tunbridge Wells, and Gordon Holt from Christ Church Orpington each decided that the challenges of passing years age and health problems meant that the time had come to retire. Between them they had served over a hundred years as Readers in this diocese! (Mike was presented with his certificate in by Bishop James in person as he was presiding elsewhere in the parish that morning.)

3 Recently retired Pastoral Assistants included Ernie and Daphne Lane who would be well known to those of you in the Gravesend Deanery, where they had served as PAs at St Aidan s for at least 30 years and were involved in the mission and ministry of the church long before they were authorised. Archdeaconry Celebration of Lay Ministry. This year it was the turn of Lay Ministers in Bromley and Bexley Archdeaconry, to have their licences, authorisations and commissions renewed. We met at All Saints Orpington on 10 th June, and in the morning, Rachel Phillips, Canon for Mission and Growth at the Cathedral, challenged us to think about Church Growth how do we recognize it and how do we encourage it? Rachel s input was followed by discussion groups in deaneries, which many appreciated as an opportunity to meet their neighbours from nearby parishes. After a very good sandwich lunch (thank you Fiona and Tricia for organising that) Paul Wright lead us in worship together, and we re-committed ourselves to serving God in our various ministries and various contexts. It was encouraging to have a number of incumbents join us for this, along with some family and friends. Next year it will be the turn of Tonbridge Archdeaconry and the date and the venue are booked 28 th April at Hildenborough. Those of you with electronic diaries (or paper ones that go from September to September) may want to note the date now. Lay Ministry Support One of the issues that the Archdeaconry Deputies and I have been mulling over for some time is how we might encourage mutual support for Lay Ministers. Some of us have the privilege of supportive ministry teams within our parishes, others are in contexts which sometimes feel lonely. Some training cohorts remain in touch with one another. There are various area groups in differing parts of the diocese, but all of these are different. Some seem to equip and encourage, but some are less encouraging and groups sharing problems and challenges run the risk of becoming negatively focussed, which is no help to anyone.

4 Attached with this mailing is a brief questionnaire designed to give us an idea of how supported (or not) Lay Ministers are feeling. You are invited to complete it and return it to me (by is fine). I hope it s obvious that if we get 500 responses, and each say something different, the chances of acting decisively on them are slight, but if a common theme/need emerges we will try to respond in some way. I have said this before but if you have any concerns about any aspect of your ministry please feel free to contact me or any of the Deputy Wardens. Sometimes it just helps to talk about things. Clerical Vacancies I am conscious that the times between vicars can be especially stressful in parishes, so we have booked a Saturday morning in November (18 th ) at St Benedict s when Chris Dench and I will meet with Lay Ministers in parish vacancies to give you an opportunity to talk together about the challenges and opportunities of these times. If you have no incumbent in your parish you should receive an invitation to this morning by the end of the first week in October. (If this morning proves to be helpful, we will repeat this every 6 months or so). Safeguarding Lots of Lay Ministers have attended the new C3 course over the Summer. Once we have caught up on making sure everyone overdue for training has attended we will get into a rhythm of inviting you to C3 a few months before you are due to do it. DBS clearance has to be renewed every 5 years and Tricia will contact you in good time to renew it via your parish Lead Recruiter. This is usually a very quick and efficient process now, but we no longer get a duplicate of your form. When your DBS is renewed please will you let Tricia know the date of issue and the certificate number for our records here. CMD International! (A report back) Brad Cook, one of our 2016 LLMs, works for the CofE and had the privilege of being sent to the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit in Chicago last month. The conference featured speakers from both Christian and secular organisations working from the premise that armed with enough humility, leaders can learn from anyone. Brad has written some reflections on this event which might be of interest to other Lay Ministers which are attached (or enclosed for those who get this by post!) to this mailing.

5 CMD Here in the diocese. (Opportunities) A few weeks ago we sent out an offering the opportunity to join the Church History within the context of ecumenism LLM module as CMD. This is open to any active Lay Ministers, and the course is over 2 Saturdays 21st October & 11th November, and 2 evenings - 3rd October & 21st November. There might still be one or two spaces on the Bereavement and Funerals module which starts very soon if you want to join this one please contact Val Butler on val.butler@rochester.anglican.org or Details of both these courses are additional attachments. Advent Retreat Finally the Summer is over, and there are Christmas goods in the supermarkets, so it really isn t too soon to decide to book for the Advent Retreat for Lay Ministers in Rochester Diocese - 'Listen and Create' led by Mandy Carr. There are more details on the attachment it would be helpful to have bookings made before they become last minute and unlike package deal summer holidays it won t get cheaper if you wait until the week before! May God bless you all as you continue to serve him,
