Por favor llame a la oficina si usted quiere que alguien siga siendo incluido/a ó removido/a TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although our Puritan forebears at Plymouth Rock were almost a hundred years removed from their Catholic roots, the old liturgical calendar still had an unconscious claim on their hearts. We've already seen how on Saint Martin's Day, November 11, medieval continental Europe observed a great harvest day of Thanksgiving, with games, dances, parades, and a festive dinner of roast goose. With the goose went ample draughts of "Saint Martin's Wine," the first wine of the new harvest. Martinmas celebrated full barns and larders stocked for the winter. Even after the Reformation, the tradition of eating goose on Saint Martin's Day was retained in Holland, and it was there that our Pilgrims encountered this tradition. When Governor Bradford sent four hunters out into the Massachusetts wilderness in the autumn of 1621, they did indeed find some geese and ducks, and were persuaded by the indigenous people to try turkey, too. Just as the liturgical calendar has been tweaked over the years, President Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving to the third Thursday in November in 1939, probably to extend the Christmas shopping season. The protest was so great that in 1941 the day established by President Lincoln, the last Thursday in November, was restored. (offered once per month in English and Spanish) CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It's easy to understand today's scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus' words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he "has made us into a kingdom" (Revelation 1:6)-- one people united in love and peace for all eternity. Copyright (c) J. S. 4 25 de Noviembre del 2018 Nuestro Señor Jesucristo Rey del Universo ESPAÑOL/SPANISH Gracia y paz a ustedes, de parte de Jesucristo, el testigo fiel, el primogénito de los muertos, el soberano de los reyes de la tierra. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1917 México recibió una nueva Constitución en la cual se estableció una política de intolerancia religiosa, especialmente en contra de la Iglesia católica romana. Con el pasar de los años las normas anticlericales fueron puestas en vigor hasta el punto que algunos mexicanos piadosos y cristianos decidieron defender su religión. En marzo de 1925, estos mexicanos católicos fundaron la Liga Nacional para la Defensa de la Libertad Religiosa, en el mismo mes en que el papa Pío XI proclamó la Fiesta de Cristo Rey, celebrada el último domingo del año litúrgico. Inspirados por el grito de " Viva Cristo Rey!", los fieles se convirtieron en Cristeros, muchos de los cuales dieron su vida por Cristo, demostrando así que Jesús es verdaderamente el Rey de sus vidas. La Cristiada duró sólo tres años en México y muchos sacerdotes, religiosas, religiosos, laicas y laicos dieron su vida para la gloria de Cristo Rey en México. Con el tiempo muchos cristianos y cristianas han debido repetir el martirio de los Cristeros en pases de Centro y Sudamérica. El siglo XX derramó mucha sangre cristiana en Latinoamérica. CRISTO ES REY El último domingo del año litúrgico celebramos la fiesta de Cristo Rey. Puede que entendamos las lecturas de hoy como acontecimientos que sucedieron hace mucho, mucho tiempo o predicciones que se harán realidad algún día en algún lugar. Pero en realidad nos invitan a aclamar a Cristo como nuestro Rey aquí y ahora. Las palabras de Jesús a Pilatos en el Evangelio nos recuerdan que su Reino trasciende el tiempo y el espacio. Y las profecías de Daniel y del Apocalipsis nos dan motivos para ser fieles a Cristo, nuestro Rey, aquí y ahora. Al terminar el año con esta fiesta proclamamos nuestra fe en que Jesucristo es el único Rey de todos los tiempos, pueblos y de toda la Creación. Sin importar cuál sea nuestra nacionalidad ni qué idioma hablemos: Cristo "y ha hecho de nosotros un reino" (Apocalipsis 1:6), en un pueblo unido en el amor y la paz por toda la eternidad. Nguyễn Liễu (408) 33 Mùa Vọng Chúa nhật tuần tới bắt đầu mùa Vọng, khởi sự một năm phụng vụ mới. Các lễ Chúa nhật sẽ dùng các bài đọc năm C. Mùa Vọng nói lên sự ngóng trông (vọng) và chuẩn bị cho Chúa đến. Chúa đã đến, sẽ đến, và vẫn đang đến. Vì vậy các tuần đầu của mùa Vọng hướng chúng ta về thời kỳ cuối cùng, về ngày tận thế, khi Chúa đến trong vinh quang. Từ 17 tháng 12, phụng vụ mới nhắc chúng ta chuẩn bị cho lễ Giáng sinh. Điều quan trọng là hãy mở rộng lòng cho Chúa vẫn đang đến, đang hiện diện bên chúng ta mỗi ngày. Hãy đến làm hòa với Chúa qua bí tích Giải tội vào tối thứ Năm, 13 tháng12, bắt đầu với suy niệm ngắn lúc 7 giờ. Một vị vua khác thường Vua chúa trần gian có một lãnh thổ để thống trị, và họ tìm cách mở rộng; Chúa Giêsu Kitô không có nơi gối đầu. Những kẻ quyền thế ở đời có quân đội và cảnh sát, bom và súng đại bác, và sử dụng chúng khi cần; trong vườn Cây Dầu, Chúa Kitô chỉ có hai thanh gươm và cấm Phêrô sử dụng. Vua chúa và những người làm lớn ở đời này cai quản dân tộc của họ bằng sự khéo léo, mưu mô và những thủ đoạn, thậm chí qua những dối trá, bất công và tội ác nữa; Chúa Giêsu không thể dùng phương tiện nào trong những phương tiện ấy, vì Ngài là Đấng Thánh của Thiên Chúa. Nếu Chúa Giêsu Kitô không có chút gì trong những điều làm nên các vị vua, vậy có thể thực sự xưng Ngài là vua không? Kinh Tin kính trả lời chúng ta: Vương quốc Ngài sẽ vô cùng tận. Tất cả Tin mừng cũng nói như vậy: Thiên sứ Gabriel loan tin cho Đức Maria rằng con của bà sẽ lên ngôi Đavit; ba vua thờ lạy Ngài như một vị vua; suốt ba năm Chúa Giêsu không ngớt nói về vương quốc. Tuy nhiên, Phúc âm kể lại một sự kiện lạ lùng, đó là thái độ của Chúa Giêsu đối với vương quyền. Khi dân chúng hăng say muốn tôn Ngài làm vua, Ngài đã từ chối. Trái lại trước mặt Philatô, trong lúc (bị sỉ nhục như một tội phạm), Chúa Giêsu lại khẳng định vương quyền của Ngài. Ngài nhất thiết đòi cho được vương quyền, trong lúc không ai muốn trao cho Ngài cả. Khi người ta hiến dâng nó cho Ngài thì Ngài lại tránh né. Chúa Giêsu quả là một vị vua lạ lùng. Trước mặt Philatô, Chúa Giêsu khẳng định Ngài là vua ở điểm nào: Tôi đến để làm chứng cho sự thật. Sự thật mà Ngài tuyên bố là ý định cứu rỗi của Thiên Chúa: sai Con Một Ngài đến để cứu độ thế gian. Mỗi lần bằng lời nói và việc làm biểu lộ ý định này, là mỗi lần Ngài thực thi quyền là vua (cứu độ) của Ngài. Khi Chúa Giêsu chữa lành các bệnh nhân, điều này đối với dân chúng là dấu hiệu cho thấy vương quốc đã đến gần, tức là Thiên Chúa đang can thiệp. Cũng vậy khi dùng quyền năng Thiên Chúa mà trừ quỷ, Ngài minh chứng sự hiện diện hữu hiệu của Thiên Chúa nơi dân thánh. Khi Ngài lui tới với những người (đau khổ, bị xã hội khinh miệt), Ngài biểu lộ lòng cảm thông của Chúa Cha. Một hôm, Chúa Giêsu tuyên bố là phúc cho những kẻ bất hạnh đủ loại: nghèo, đói, khát, buồn rầu, bị bách hại. Ngài không khôi hài đâu, nhưng Ngài loan báo rằng họ sẽ là những người đầu tiên được hưởng Nước Trời sắp đến. Đối với kẻ bị trói buộc bởi những luật lệ tỉ mỉ, Ngài nói với một lời giải thoát: Ngày sa-bát được đặt ra vì con người Ngài lại làm chứng cho sự thật bằng cái chết. Vì những giá trị mà Ngài đề cao chính là nguyên nhân của cái chết này. Vì làm chứng như vậy về Thiên Chúa, nên Chúa Giêsu chống lại những gì quen thuộc, Ngài thay đổi cách đối xử với Thiên Chúa và tha nhân. Ngài làm cho các chức trách tôn giáo căm thù. Tóm lại Ngài trở thành kẻ xách động! Khi con người biết Tin mừng, họ sẽ không thể dửng dưng đối với những gì thuộc lãnh vực chính trị. Họ không dửng dưng khi chính phủ kỳ thị chủng tộc, dung thứ bất bình đẳng, áp bức kẻ yếu hoặc bóc lột thế giới thứ ba. Nhân danh Tin mừng, người Kitô hữu phê phán những điều này. Chúa Giêsu đã từ chối quyền bính chính trị, nhưng Ngài đã để lại những nguyên tắc hướng dẫn lương tâm chính trị. Hôm nay chúng ta hãy nhớ rằng Ngài chỉ làm Vua theo mức độ chúng ta sống theo chân lý của Ngài mà thôi. - Tóm suy niệm của Guy Marin
