4 Dear Friends in Christ, Father John Baver Lord, it is good for us to be here! - Matthew 17:4 The above quotation was spoken by Saint Peter during the Transfiguration, a remarkable moment in the life of Jesus. Saint Peter s words reflect my feelings as this new chapter begins in our area, and throughout the Diocese. I am very blessed to be a part of the clergy team assigned to serve in Butler. As the Senior Parochial Vicar, I will be assisting Father Kevin a he leads our parishes in this time of transition and opportunity. I have enjoyed working with Father Kevin, as well as Father Dan and Father Will. Our team has come together quite well, and we are looking forward to the future. I am originally from the Greenfield section of the city of Pittsburgh, and Saint Rosalia is my home parish. Since my ordination on May 18, 1991, I have served as either parochial vicar or pastor at various parishes in the counties of Allegheny, Washington, Lawrence, and now of course, Butler. Priesthood is a joy; a true gift given to us by Jesus. Walking with people during times of celebration, as well as times of difficulty, is a privilege and a blessing of ministry. I very much look forward to getting to know the people in our respective parishes, and I am very happy to feel so welcomed by the people of Butler. May God continue to lead us and guide us as we seek to follow His will. Christ s Peace, Father John PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Lord God, life is Your gift to us. In our baptism, You invited us to follow your call to serve You and the Church. Help us today to hear your words. Raise up selfless men and women to serve You and bear witness to Your love as priests, sisters, and brothers. We ask Your holy mother s intercession to help us to live our lives to the fullest each day, in the name of Your Son, Jesus, Christ the Lord. Amen
5 THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE During November we share our abundances. Place your donations of food, paper products, and non-perishable items in the orange bin in the church hallway. They will be given to the needy. BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE During November, we pray especially for our departed loved ones. The Book of Remembrance is placed in the sanctuary. Please sign the names of all your departed loved ones in the book before or after Masses. During the prayers of the faithful, all those in the book will be remembered in our prayers of petition. HONOR OUR VETERANS As we celebrate the national holiday of Veterans Day this week, we give thanks for the brave women and men who served and are serving our country, and those who died that we might live in freedom. ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! She, From Her Poverty, Has Contributed All She Had - Generosity is one of the virtues of an authentic Christian life. Our hearts are formed to recognize that everything we have is a gift from God and, as we are taught from our earliest years, it is good to share what we have been given. Our generosity - whether it is in the form of time, talent, or treasure, is a gift of our surplus. Our volunteerism or fundraising support is budgeted in light of the obligations and responsibilities of our daily lives. Yet, today s Gospel reading gives us some food for thought as we reflect upon the charity and service that are hallmarks of the Christian life. The poor widow, we are told, sharing those two small coins gives all she has as an act of generosity. In a way, she becomes an image of Jesus Christ who would ultimately pour himself out entirely and give of his own life for us all. Does this mean that we have to give everything we own to charity or quit our jobs so we can spend every waking moment volunteering for this or that? Not quite. It is an invitation for us, as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! to not give what is leftover of acts of charity and service, but that we give our best in service of God and others. Let us recognize that our livelihood is directed by the God who loves us. This is how we build the Kingdom of God in our parishes and communities and make the church more alive!
