At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Matthew 3:16-17 Think for a moment about the reason you were baptized. For many of us who were baptized at a young age, the reason is simple: our parents made the decision for us. However, one of the most significant theological truths in our Orthodox faith is the doctrine of free will. God, out of His love for us, has given us the ability to choose. Although we did not choose baptism as a child, as an adult, we do have a choice to follow Christ and His teachings. We have a choice to attend Church regularly, not at all, or attend a different Church all together. It is an expression of our free will. As we celebrate the baptism of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ this month, it is important for us to remember the significance of this major feast day. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist to initiate a new covenant: to baptize all nations in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The water used in baptism is significant for the regeneration of our soul and body and for the cleansing of our old self, into a pure, renewed life in Jesus Christ. The baptism of our Lord is referred to as Epiphany, because it is the manifestation of the Holy Trinity. For the first time in the history of mankind, God is revealed to the world through the Father (with His voice) the Son (in the flesh) and the Holy Spirit (in the form of a dove). As the Church commemorates Christ s baptism and celebrates God s manifestation, let us also be inspired through this liturgical tradition to reflect on our own baptism. Just as His Father and the Holy Spirit were present at Christ s baptism, parents, godparents and loved ones were also present at our own baptism. Just as Christ needed to dwell on earth for the Holy Trinity to be truly revealed to the world, so too must we also choose to allow Christ to dwell in Continued on Page 2 The Word 2.0 "1

2 S E Q U O I A C L U B Continued from Page 1 our hearts so the Father, Son and Holy Spirit may be revealed in our lives. Many of us may not have actively chosen baptism, but we do however have the opportunity to actively confirm the decision of our baptism by accepting Christ in our lives and actively participating in a relationship with God. I pray that January 2017 is not just the beginning of another month or year, but it is the beginning of a newly strengthened faith. May we all reflect on our baptism, our faith, and our involvement in the life of the Church so we might reveal within ourselves the immeasurable blessings that God continues to bestow on us all. May it be a happy and healthy 2017 New Year to you and your families! In Christ, Fr. 3 P A R I S H C O U N C I L Why Do We Have Our Homes Blessed? by Phyllis Meshel Onest, M.Div. Begin Everything with Prayer Since we are reminded in Scripture to begin whatever we do with prayer, it has been the practice of Orthodox Christians for centuries to have new dwellings blessed either before or just after settling in. This has been extended to one's business or office, and even college dorm rooms. "The service performed by the priest to bless the new dwelling is somewhat similar to the consecration of a church [in the Russian practice] in that holy water, holy oil, and incense are used and a lesson from the holy Gospel is read. All the rooms of the house are sprinkled with holy water and each of the four outer walls are anointed with the sign of the Cross with holy oil, a candle placed before them, and after the censing of the house, the lesson from the Holy Gospel is read [in Greek practice the service of the Small Blessing of Waters is generally done]. At the conclusion of the blessing, the inhabitants are blessed with holy water: the husband first, followed by the wife and then the children - the oldest first. Relatives and friends present are then blessed." (Marriage and the Christian Home, by Rev. Michael B. Henning, p.24.) Back to "The Fall" From Scripture we know that whatever God created was good, but with "the Fall", evil entered the world, corrupting the creation. God the Father sent His Son Jesus to save it by effecting a "new creation". This is celebrated at Theophany, specifically with the Great Blessing of Water. "The consecration of the waters on this feast places the entire world - through its 'prime element' of water - in the perspective of the cosmic creation, sanctification, and glorification of the Kingdom of God in Christ and the Spirit." (The Orthodox Faith, Vol. II, Worship, by Fr. Thomas Hopko, p.127.) All the readings, hymns, prayers, and actions of the day speak of God's presence in our entire world and universe, His creation. Through water all of the creation is once again sanctified by God, becoming good again, the way God had intended. The Feast Of Theophany The Feast of Theophany (or Epiphany) commemorates the Baptism of our Lord in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. We know from the troparion of the day that "the Trinity was made manifest" to us. But there's more to it than this. "When Jesus descends into the depths of the river, there occurs a profound upheaval. It is not the one baptized who is purified, for he is spotless; but it is the water that is transfigured and illumined. This water, which was believed to be transparent and purifying, is in fact polluted, inhabited by evil spirits, servants of the old gods. By purifying the elements, by sanctifying matter, Jesus frees the cosmos from the powers of evil." (The Incarnate God, Vol. I, Catherine Aslanoff, French edition editor, translated by Paul Meyendorff, p.163.) continued on Page 4 The Word 2.0 "3

4 The Great Blessing of Water and the Home S E Q U O I A C L U B continued from Page 3 The Great Blessing of Water takes place at the end of that day's Liturgy. Since our homes cannot be brought to the Church, the Church - through the priest and cantor - go to the homes. There the service of blessing, which began in the church, is finished with the sprinkling of water in the home. Traditionally, in most Orthodox parishes, the priest personally visits all his parishioners each year to pray with them in the place where they live, and to bless their surroundings with the newly sanctified water of Theophany (January 6). By sanctifying our living quarters, our private place, we extend the grace of God to our individual dwellings. (In very large parishes a yearly visit may not be possible. In areas of the country where the winter is harsh, I know of at least one parish where houses are blessed at the beginning of the ecclesiastical year in September.) We also bring the blessed water to our homes to use throughout the year to bless our homes and to drink whether we are ill or as part of our daily prayer life. "There are many occasions in family life when a sip of holy water can help to remind us of the blessing that was given 'to bestow sanctification', 'unto healing of soul and body', 'to be a fountain welling forth unto life eternal', as the priest prayed in the litany of Epiphany day." (Little Falcons: Water, Vol. 5, No. 2, 1998, p.33.) Weaving Christ into Our Lives The blessing of homes by these holy waters maintains the spiritual association between the 'family church' and the parish, as well as again providing for the sharing of God's spiritual gifts. This annual blessing is not as elaborate as the blessing of the new dwelling, but because of this it should not be overlooked, for it is in this way that the grace of God is extended to individual dwellings." (Marriage and the Christian Home, p.25.) If the priest comes to bless the home when the children are present, they have the opportunity to see the parish priest in a different and personal situation. If the priest permits, they can lead the way through the house, or hold a candle. They can show him their rooms or pets or favorite toys. They receive a blessing with water. For children, the house blessing shows the connection of the Church to the home. In Summary What does it mean to ask God to bless something? All things in the world have been spoiled right along with us. God must bless His world again in order for it to be the way that He wants it to be. For this reason God sent His Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit to the world: to bless everyone and everything that He made, to make all things good again. When the priest comes to bless our homes, he asks God to have mercy on the house, to rid it of every evil and to fill it with every blessing. What a wonderful way to begin the New Year! Bring your parents/ grandparent to Sunday School. After communion The Tradition of the Vasilopita (with Recipe) From the DOWAMA St. Raphael Clergy Brotherhood: The tradition of baking and cutting a special "pita" (which can mean a loaf of bread, a cake, or even a pie) each year on January 1st is observed in honor of our holy father Basil the Great, archbishop of Caesarea in Cappodocia-- hence its name "Vasilopita" meaning "St. Basil's Bread." This tradition is observed in both parish churches and in the homes of the faithful. What is the meaning of this tradition and how did it begin? For centuries upon centuries, parents, grandparents and godparents have related the following to Orthodox children about St. Basil and the Vasilopita. One year, during a time of terrible famine, the emperor levied a sinfully excessive tax upon the people of Caesarea. The tax was such a heavy burden upon the already impoverished people that to avoid debtors' prison each family had to relinquish its few remaining coins and pieces of jewelry, including precious family heirlooms. Learning of this injustice upon his flock, St. Basil the Great, the archbishop of Caesarea, took up his bishop's staff and the book of the holy Gospels and came to his people's defense by fearlessly calling the emperor to repentance. By God's grace, the emperor did repent! He canceled the tax and instructed his tax collectors to turn over to St. Basil all of the chests containing the coins and jewelry which had been paid as taxes by the people of Caesarea. But now St. Basil was faced with the daunting and impossible task of returning these thousands of coins and pieces of jewelry to their rightful owners. After praying for a long time before the icons of our Master Christ and His All-Holy Mother, St. Basil had all the treasures baked into one huge pita. He then called all the townspeople to prayer at the cathedral, and, after Divine Liturgy, he blessed and cut the pita, giving a piece to each person. Miraculously, each owner received in his piece of Vasilopita his own valuables. They all joyfully returned home, giving thanks to God who had delivered them from abject poverty and to their good and holy bishop St. Basil the Great! In remembrance of that miracle wrought by God as a result of St. Continued on page " The Word 2.0

17 Vasilopita F R O M A R O U N D T H E A R C H D I O C E S E Continued from page 16 Basil's love and defense of his people, Orthodox Christians have observed the tradition of the Vasilopita each year on January 1st-- the date on which St. Basil reposed in the Lord in the year 379. In some places the Vasilopita is prepared as a loaf of rich bread (like that used for Artoklasia), while in other places it takes the form of a spicy sheet cake (without frosting). But no matter what form a Vasilopita may take, they all have one thing in common-- each contains a single coin. After placing the bread dough or cake batter in the proper baking pan, the baker makes with the foil-wrapped coin the sign of the Cross over it, closes his/her eyes, and then secretely places it into the unbaked Vasilopita. After the Vasilopita is baked and cooled, it is blessed and cut following Divine Liturgy for the feast of St. Basil on January 1st. Ingredients 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter 1 cup sugar 3 extra-large eggs Grated rind of 2 large oranges Grated rind of 2 large lemons A Simple Recipe for Vasilopita 1/2 teaspoon crushed/powdered sour cherry pits (Arabic mahleb, Greek makhlepi) 2 teaspoons crushed/powdered gum mastic (Arabic miski, Greek mastikha) 4 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup milk 1 egg yolk blended with 1 tablespoon milk sesame seeds blanched almonds a clean coin - a quarter will do nicely - wrapped in silver or gold foil Preparation 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Thickly butter a 10-inch round spring form pan. 2. In a large bowl of an electric mixer, cream the butter until it is light and fluffy. Beat in the sugar and beat until the mixture is light. Beat in the eggs, one a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the orange and lemon rinds, and the crushed/powdered sour cherry pits and gum mastic. 3. In a separate bowl, sift together three cups of the flour, the baking powder and salt. 4. With the mixer on low speed, gradually beat in the dry mixture alternately with the milk. The batter will be very thick. Using a wooden spoon, gradually blend in the remaining flour, beating well until completely smooth. 5. Spread the batter into the pan, press the coin into the dough until it is completely covered (don't let anyone see where you place it!), and then smooth the top. Brush the top evenly with the egg and milk mixture and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Gently press the blanched almonds into the top to make a Cross and spell out the date of the new year. 6. Bake for 45 minutes, until golden brown (if it browns too quickly, cover the top with aluminum foil). The Word 2.0 "17
