1 NATIVITY OF CHRIST GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH The Word Fr. John s Message Entrance of the Theotokos Page 1 November 2018 And the Word became flesh & dwelt among us, full of grace & truth. ~John 1:14 Liturgies & Readings Upcoming services for November Page 2 Giving is best expressed out of gratitude. When we are grateful, we are humbled by the abundant gifts blessed to us from above. In other words, the purest form of thankfulness is giving generously. Thanksgiving is an opportunity for us to reflect upon our blessings and to be grateful for the gifts God has given us in our lives. This year, we celebrate Thanksgiving just one day after the feast of the Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple. Not to be confused with Christ s Presentation commemorated 40 days after His birth, the Virgin Mary s Entry took place when she was 4 years old. This was to fulfill a promise made by her parents. Sts. Joachim and Anna prayed throughout their marriage for children but could not conceive. Even in their old age, they continued to pray earnestly for a child as their barrenness caused them much struggle, and even public humiliation. Throughout this grief, their faith never faltered. Parish Council Parish Assembly 50th Anniversary Page 4 Philoptochos Harvest Luncheon Holiday Bazaar Page 6 When Sts. Joachim and Anna were finally blessed with a child, they were so thankful for this gift that they dedicated their daughter back to God. At four years old, Joachim and Anna presented their daughter to the High Priest, and gave him, along with the other virgins, the responsibility of raising their daughter in the Holy Temple. It was through this upbringing of prayer, fasting, and reading of Holy Scripture, that the Virgin Mary cultivated her grace, purity, and faith. On Thanksgiving, we sit down with our family and close friends to offer our gratefulness for their friendship and love. We express this joy through a common meal, sharing our gratitude with each other, and especially with our children. God out of his love for us gave humanity the ability to create life, and as parents, we are eternally grateful for the children that we have been blessed with in our lives. But then is the purest form of thankfulness giving up our children like Sts. Joachim and Sunday School New Classes Open House Page 10 Upcoming Opportunities Family Night Journey to Fullness Page 12 Anna? In essence, yes. It can understandably be difficult to understand how Sts. Joachim and Anna literally gave up their daughter for someone else to raise. It can also be difficult to understand the pain of not being able to conceive a child. As parents, we are not all called to give up our children the same way Sts. Joachim and Anna did, however we are called to give our children back to God. Through praying together as a family, by sharing the faith through our example, by worshiping with them in the Divine Liturgy, by teaching them Holy Scripture, these are all ways that we give our children back to the Lord out of our gratitude. This is the purest way in which we can express our gratitude to God for our children. This is the best way in which we can celebrate Thanksgiving. If we truly are grateful for our children, I pray we follow the example of Sts. Joachim and Anna, and give our children back to Him who gave them to us. The Word 2018 "1

A publican before being called by Christ, he became one of the Twelve Apostles, and an Evangelist. While still in Palestine, he wrote his Gospel first in Hebrew, being also the first of all to write the Gospel. When he is depicted in icons, there is portrayed next to him the likeness of a man, one of the symbolic living creatures mentioned by Ezekiel (1.10), which, as Saint Irenaeus writes, is a symbol of our Saviour's Incarnation. Apolytikion of Apostle and Evangelist Matthew O Holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew, intercede to our merciful God, that He may grant our souls forgiveness of sins. Kontakion of Apostle and Evangelist Matthew When thou didst cast away the publican's balance and wast united to the yoke of uprightness, then didst thou prove a merchant of great excellence, one that gathered in the wealth of the wisdom of Heaven; for this cause, the word of truth thou didst herald, O Matthew, and didst arouse the souls of sluggish men by signifying the dread day of reckoning.
