1 NATIVITY OF CHRIST GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH The Word June 2018 And the Word became flesh & dwelt among us, full of grace & truth. Fr. John s Message Community Page 1 Liturgies & Readings Upcoming services for June Page 2 Dear Stewards and Faithful of Nativity of Christ, So now I am giving you a new commandment: love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples. John 13:34-35 The above scriptural passage is a precise summary of what it means to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As Orthodox Christians we are called to not just believe and follow Christ, but to spread His Gospel: we are called to love. Whether it is a friend or a stranger, a loved one or an enemy, we are called to love them as Christ loved us. This is how we can truly be a witness to our faith and prove that we are disciples of Jesus Christ. The 2018 Marin Greek Festival is complete and we should all be grateful for another successful year. Thousands of people were able to come to our Church and experience our food, music, dancing, and faith. It was a Parish Council Thank You s Power of Prayer Page 4 Philoptochos Membership Scholarships Page 5 success because these thousands of people not only experienced our Church, but experienced the love we have for our Church. I was honored to receive numerous compliments from visitors about the friendly, hardworking service they received from our stewards. One Festival attendee even wrote, it was such a beautiful Festival - so much love there. I thank all the stewards of our beloved community for volunteering your time and efforts. Our Chairs, Rose Hunter and Nico Haris, as well as our Parish Council President and Vice President, Spiro Stratigos and Vicki Kalabokes, committed numerous hours to ensure the Festival was efficiently executed and I thank them for their leadership. There were some changes to the Festival this year, particularly to the layout, that has been positively received and I thank all of you for your hard work. Marin Greek Festival Marin Festival Race Marin Festival Highlights Page 9 Parishioner Profiles Bryan & Paula Hall Tom and Irene Meehan Page 14 The purpose of our Festival is to share our faith and culture with Marin County but that cannot be accomplished if we do not first love each other. I m sure there were moments that we may have been short with one another and I encourage each of you to reach out to the people you worked with and thank them for their efforts. I hope that each of you understands the value of your participation and how it contributes to a vibrant Church community. I pray that we all feel an environment of love at Nativity of Christ not just during our Festival, but throughout the calendar year. This will ensure our community s true success: to love one another as Christ has loved each of us. May God grant us all health to continue this wonderful tradition next year and for many years to come with Christian love. In Christ s love, Fr. John The Word 2018 "1

2 June Services & Readings S E Q U O I A C L U B F E B R U A R Y S E R V I C E S & R E A D I N G S All Divine Services on Sundays and weekdays will begin with Orthros at 8:30am followed by the Divine Liturgy. Please make every effort to attend these worship services on time. Day Date Feast Day Epistle Reading Gospel Reading Sun June 3 All Saints Hebrews 11:33-40; 12:1-2 Matthew 10:32-33, 37-38; 19:27-30 Sun June 10 2nd Sunday of Matthew Romans 2:10-16 Matthew 4:18-23 Sun June 17 3rd Sunday of Matthew Romans 5:1-10 Matthew 6:22-33 Sun June 24 Nativity of John the Baptist Nativity of the Forerunner John the Baptist Romans 13:11-14; 14:1-4 Luke 1:1-12, 57-68, He that was greater than all who are born of women, the Prophet who received God's testimony that he surpassed all the Prophets, was born of the aged and barren Elizabeth (Luke 1: 7) and filled all his kinsmen, and those that lived round about, with gladness and wonder. But even more wondrous was that which followed on the eighth day when he was circumcised, that is, the day on which a male child receives his name. Those present called him Zacharias, the name of his father. But the mother said, "Not so, but he shall be called John." Since the child's father was unable to speak, he was asked, by means of a sign, to indicate the child's name. He then asked for a tablet and wrote, "His name is John. And immediately Zacharias' mouth was opened, his tongue was loosed from its silence of nine months, and filled with the Holy Spirit, he blessed the God of Israel, Who had fulfilled the promises made to their fathers, and had visited them that were sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, and had sent to them the light of salvation. Zacharias prophesied concerning the child also, saying that he would be a Prophet of the Most High and Forerunner of Jesus Christ. And the child John, who was filled with grace, grew and waxed strong in the Spirit; and he was in the wilderness until the day of his showing to Israel (Luke 1:57-80). His name is a variation of the Hebrew "Johanan," which means "Yah is gracious." Apolytikion of Nativity of John the Forerunner O Prophet and Forerunner of the presence of Christ, we who fervently honor you cannot worthily praise you. For by your revered and glorious birth the barrenness of your mother and the muteness of your father were unbound, and the incarnation of the Son of God is proclaimed to the world. Kontakion of Nativity of John the Forerunner She that once was barren doth today bring forth Christ's Forerunner, John, the culmination and the crown of all the Prophets. For when he, in River Jordan, laid his hand on Him Whom the Prophets preached aforetime, he was revealed as God the Word's fore-chosen Prophet, His mighty preacher, and His Forerunner in grace. 2" The Word 2018

3 Parish Council Update F R O M A R O U N D T H E A R C H D I O C E S E May was full of activity on our Church Campus. Throughout the month we filled the Church in prayer each week as we celebrated the Resurrection, Pentecost and the Saints. Each of us gave of our time and talents in May and we must thank each and every one of you. Words don t express the appreciation we have for all that was done. In appreciation of Tim Chyrklund for his Eagle Scout Project that resulted in the Beautification of our Church Grounds. The median in the parking lot is very attractive now with pavers and rocks to make walking from one side to the other not only beautiful but safer. the 28 Volunteers who worked on May 5 beautification day to weed, prune, plant, mulch the outside; and paint, clean, and polish the inside of Church and buildings. the 130+ people who participated and/or volunteered at the 5K & 10K Marin Greek Festival Walk/Run to benefit Alex Madias. The net proceeds will be given to Alex & Robyn Madias to help with ongoing expenses as a result of Alex s injury. the almost 300 Festival volunteers who volunteered their time planning, meeting, ordering, renting, cooking, fundraising, setting up, staffing, and tearing down the Festival who were part of a tremendous team to make this year s Festival truly a Community Event. The Festival brought everyone together for a common goal of hospitality that helped create and continue friendships with bonds for life as part of God s family. the 300+ Goats: The goats came back! The news spread quickly that our 3+ acres of open space has been trimmed to the roots by over 300 goats. This effort not only made the open space clean but also created a fire break required by the City and County of Marin. The Fire Department will be giving us a grant for $1500 because of our use of the goats for weed abatement! We are thankful that so many people stepped up this year to take on major roles and others who were always there selflessly to support those in charge with whatever they needed. We are fortunate to have been able to gain new connections to so many. The Word 2018 "3

4 Parish Council Update A R O U N D T H E A R C H D I O C E S E The Power of Prayer We are also blessed that Alex and Robyn Madias were able to greet people at the Festival Walk/Run on Saturday the 19 th and at the Festival on Sunday night the 27th. It is truly a miracle seeing Alex back with us. There are still more medical hurdles so our Nativity community continues to pray for Alex s full recovery. The strength of our group prayers is powerful. Stay Strong Alex. We are all with you on your journey. We can t wait until you will be back with us full time. Parish Assembly Our Parish assembly meeting allowed us to review the success and growth of the ministries of the Church. Thank you for those that help lead our ministries. The success of these ministries depends on each of you. Summertime Many of you will be traveling different times during the summer. There is no vacation from God however. We hope everyone will have pleasant holidays and that we will see you at Church all summer when you are in town so we may continue our community friendships as we worship together. A Lasting Gift for the Church A bequest or gift through your will is one of the simplest ways to make a lasting gift to the Church. Please consult your financial advisor for advice. A suggested wording: I hereby bequeath the sum of $ as a charitable bequest to the Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church of Novato (Tax ID ) to be used for charitable purposes of the Church. Philoptochos Scholarship Philoptochos Scholarship We congratulate George Rouman for receiving the academic scholarship from the Ladies of our Philoptochos. George will soon be attending the University of Wisconsin and we pray that God continues to guide him through his collegiate studies. 4" The Word 2018
