Romans 3:5 Suffering is something that we commonly want to avoid. No one likes to suffer. Many decisions in our life are made in order to escape any type of suffering. St. Paul however suggests that we as Christians should rejoice in our sufferings as he outlines how suffering cultivates virtue. Upon hearing of the passing of Fr. James Adams, all of us to some degree, suffered. He was a mentor, leader, spiritual guide, and confidant to so many. We remember his presence at weddings, baptisms, funerals, and many other life events. He taught us much about our faith and ourselves. We mourn together knowing that he is no longer on this earth. But through that suffering, hundreds of people gathered at his funeral services to offer their love and support. The love of God was truly present in our hearts as we remembered the life of a special man. The wildfires in the North Bay caused intense suffering to thousands of people. Many lost their homes, their jobs, and even their lives. This natural disaster caused a type of suffering that many of us are not accustom to but we should be strengthened by St. Paul's message to the Romans. The suffering endured by the wildfires produced endurance through the support of friends and strangers opening their homes, donating clothes, and cooking meals. This endurance produced character as all those participating in these relief efforts exuded empathy, joy and kindness. This character produced hope since we can all reflect upon this devastation and be assured that in times of despair, our fellow man is willing help. We truly cannot be disappointed with the hope that was generated from these life-shattering fires, only inspired by the good works displayed by everyone. Through these events that our community recently experienced, I pray these words of St. Paul strengthen us in faith to know that all the struggles we may face will also produce hope. We must not think that our struggles should be endured in isolation. We are a family and a community that is here to help support one another as we endure our sufferings with hope in our Lord and Savior. This type of hope does not disappoint, because the Holy Spirit gives it to us and the love of God is in our hearts. This is why St. Paul and numerous saints of the Church rejoiced in times of adversity because they knew God would help them overcome any obstacle. They knew that struggle would produce fruits of virtue in their lives. May we too rejoice, knowing that God will always instill in us His eternal love and hope through our sufferings. She was an exceedingly beautiful maiden, most chaste, and illustrious in wealth, lineage, and learning. By her steadfast understanding, she utterly vanquished the passionate and unbridled soul of Maximinus, the tyrant of Alexandria; and by her eloquence, she stopped the mouths of the so-called philosophers who had been gathered to dispute with her. She was crowned with the crown of martyrdom in the year 305. Her holy relics were taken by Angels to the holy mountain of Sinai, where they were discovered many years later; the famous monastery of Saint Catherine was originally dedicated to the Holy Transfiguration of the Lord and the Burning Bush, but later was dedicated to Saint Catherine. According to the ancient usage, Saints Catherine and Mercurius were celebrated on the 24th of this month, whereas the holy Hieromartyrs Clement of Rome and Peter of Alexandria were celebrated on the 25th. The dates of the feasts of these Saints were interchanged at the request of the Church and Monastery of Mount Sinai, so that the festival of Saint Catherine, their patron, might be celebrated more festively together with the Apodosis of the Feast of the Entry of the Theotokos. The Slavic Churches, however, commemorate these Saints on their original dates. 2" The Word 2017

Deadline to place orders is November 25 in order to guarantee delivery before Christmas. Annual Community Christmas Card We first began our Community Christmas card as a way of raising funds for the RCA (Retired Clergy Association) after Fr. James Adams, of Blessed memory, spoke to our chapter about the needs of the retired clergy and Presvyteras who had retired before there was a retirement plan available for our clergy. This year, we will send the funds to the RCA in Fr. Adams name. Fr. Adams served on the RCA board for many years. We are hoping that all parishioners will participate. A special thank you to those who came on Saturday, Oct. 14th to cook Pastichio to be distributed to the local evacuee shelters as needed, and to the ladies who cooked for the homeless shelter in San Rafael. 9 Sunday School Corner F R O M A R O U N D T H E A R C H D I O C E S E We had a very productive October in Sunday School! At our first Activity Sunday began our studies on the Sacraments of the church. We learned about the meaning and the purpose of baptism and chrismation. Also we began learning a hymn called "A New Commandment" based off Christ's teaching to love one another. The hymn lyrics are as follows: A new commandment I give to you A new commandment I give to you That you shall love each other That you shall love each other Even as I have loved you By this all men shall know By this all men shall know That you are my disciples That you are my disciples If you have love for each other You can listen to the hymn on YouTube by following this link. We will be learning this hymn over the next 2 to 3 Activity Sundays. At this month's activity Sunday we will be studying the sacrament of Holy Communion. Parents and grandparents feel free to come learn with us on Activity Sundays We also put our faith into action by sending our love and prayers in the form of thinking of you cards for our parishioners and neighbors affected by the wildfires in Sonoma county and neighboring counties. The kids wrote loving and heartfelt messages. The cards were distributed to parishioners and shelters to lift the spirits of our neighbors in their time of need. Thank you to all the parents who attended Sunday School Open House in October. Lots of participation and thoughtful discussions. Classes are studying a variety of aspects of our faith this year from the epistle and gospel lessons to prayers such as the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Prayer of Saint Ephraim the Syrian. The children are studying about prayer as communication with God they are learning to pray and write prayers and they are learning about the Divine Liturgy. We encourage you to check in with your children and ask them about what they're learning. And our doors as Sunday School staff members are always open. Please contact us anytime with questions about your child's curriculum and things they're learning in class. Look for another open house in the late Winter/early Spring and be ready for another opportunity to be a Sunday School student for a day in your child's class. Your contribution was not only generous, but most timely. Thank you very much for not only caring, but acting in the spirit of the Christ we both serve. On behalf of the Novato United Methodist Church, John A Trumbull Chair of Trustees On Saturday, October 14th, 20 parishioners cooked 10 large trays of pastichio for evacuees. A portion was delivered to United Methodist Church in Novato that day. The reminder of the pans will soon be delivered to Fire Stations and Police Departments. The Word 2017 " 11
